Major Nelson: Can play used games on different Xbox w/o fee but in your profile only

But what if I can't connect to that profile? So I am just assed out, then? I would be unable to play my legitimate original retail disc on a different machine if I can't sign in?

MS needs to learn how to send a consistent message. These people need talking points. So many MS people contradicting each other today.

"Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend’s house – should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile."

So just like the 360 then?

What is the issue here?

Its not the same...

Eh that's not that bad. I assume you don't have to USE that account on the other system, right? I mean, I hope I just need to have my account on the other system and not be the actual one that's logged in at the time.

That last line basically is confirming the fee scenario, if passing a game to a friend or whatever.

PR wise this has been a mess. Someone needs to tell phil Harrison they're not divulging specifics yet...he's pretty much let the cat out of the bag.

So you'd have to sell your profile every time you want to sell a video game? This is so unfeasible that you might as well be unable to play used games.

Notice he says there is no fee while you're signed on to YOUR profile.

While he says nothing has been confirmed. They are definitely exploring the options and ultimately there will be a fee.

This is such a clusterfuck though. No one has it together. You think they would have though. They pushed back their initial reveal. They should have been better prepared.

No. My friend can play a retail 360 regardless of the account.

Great vague statement though

Hey, bro. You can borrow my XBOX ONE game Forza 5.

Cool, so what's your pass to your account so I can play it.

lol.

My first thought. I lend my games to friends all the time, I'm not giving them my account info ever.

If I buy an used game or borrow a game, I can play it on my profile, no profile, my friends profile, etc.

If I buy an used Xbox One game, I have to download and sign-in to my profile on my friends One to let him play it. No way in hell they allow your profile to be used on multiple 360's at once. There's no way in hell I'm allowing my password and credit card information on a 360 that I don't supervise.

He did say you have to be "signed" into your profile. This means the purchase is connected to your account. This means in order to verify its connected to your account you must have an Internet connected.

But what if you want to let your friend borrow the game and he doesn't sign on your account, or simply doesn't have Internet?

So still no lending or renting. All this does is solve the "what if I am physically at my bros house and we just want to bro my bro game" quandary.

If you take everything else from the equation yeah.

Yeah, as I mentioned in the other thread, the pricing is why I deal with the DRM that is Steam. While the 'behavior' is the same, the pricing does not help with this at all. I put up with Steam their validation because of the cheap games, I don't think MS or the publishers are going to have 70% off sales.

This is basically how the current system works anyway. Want to play XBLA game on a different Xbox? Must be signed onto your XBL account.

Yeah, that's what I was about to say.

It sounds like XBLA.

If true then this doesn't sound that bad -- the ability to play games on another console is still there.

It's just the buying used games part that's iffy. One won't know the original game owner's profile. Guess that's where the fee comes in.

I have no idea how Microsoft does not have a unified message in place. They had ample time to prepare for their own feature set. It's not that tough to get talking points in order and memos drafted and sent to the correct people.

It's amateur hour out there, and that's kinda shocking.

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
"Hey pal you want to borrow this awesome game I have? Here let me just sign into my profile so you can play, just let me know when you are signed in as me so I can make a sandwich or something since I can't use my own system."

I wonder if they will cut some deals with second hand game suppliers where they supply them with the codes for a price or something, that would still let the retailer get a cut and the developers

i assume that if you gave your disk to your friend there would still be problems unless you give him your password and stuff

...

Isn't it just that you need the code to install the game so that you no longer need the disc, and if you don't have it (or offline) you have to play from the slow ass BluRay drive?

So in other words, Steam?

Once game ownership is tied to an account than the game disc becomes... what? A speedier disc-based download for the game you still have to actually purchase online?

Why is it the questions we would so obviously have instantly are the ones they are going to be ready to answer later?

Yes. Just like Steamworks retail games. Incredibly convenient to be able to own the disc but never need it to play, and to be able to log in and see all of your games anywhere.

Sony is the next to "fuck up" along with Microsoft. EA didn't just drop the online pass on all future titles because only one of the next gen systems was implementing it at the hardware level. PS4 is next. Have fun people.

I can't keep switching threads! Anyways, as suspected, this is the same system as XBLA. They've mentioned they'll have a license transfer mechanism that doesn't currently exist*, but haven't detailed it. Also, it's important to distinguish between quotes and other information when reading an article.

*There is a current system, but it isn't meant for transferring to other people.

And yeah, still blocks used games

but they will limit how many consoles you can register your ID with....

it defeats the purpose in anyway, you would have to give personal information.

and have to be signed in with the account that game is registered with?

Phil actually did discuss a specific scenario where you have to pay full price for a second hand game's activation, major. Keep backpedaling though and maybe you'll have people so confused they'll actually buy the console when it's released. Worked for the wii u.
