...Some people would probably get mad at this comment, but hey I'm happy if more people branch out to the other games as well.

But someone made a post almost exactly like that earlier lol. I seriously feel it to be true. :/ also Persona is SMT too so there's that! This SMT looks in a way like Persona too. Well to me. It's cute the clothes/customization. Looks way less dark and more accessible this time around.

not in Japan tho

Persona 3/4 made SMT relevant. It's riding off that popularity.

Persona her power

SMT made Persona :p so at best it's a symbiotic relationship. Anyway, Nocturne sold pretty well (the last main numbered installment) already, so if IV does just as well well, it's continuing tradition, no?

I never understood why some SMT fans are upset about Persona popularity.

Because the spin off became more popular than the main game. It's not a biggy. Persona just became more appealing to people when 3/4 came out. This gave SMT more promo imo

More success means higher priority and bigger budgets. Compare the battle systems of Persona 4 and SMT4 for example.

These are Japanese LTD numbers.

Mess. I was thinking WW for some reason so was expecting numbers in the millions.

Thank you for the numbers guys :)

They are diffrent now ? Nocturne was very similar to P3/P4 from what i remeber.

I haven't watched any SMT4 gameplay trailer - only intro/story one.

The fact tat Atlus got so many sales out of Persona 3 is amazing but I guess that just shows how popular that specific game was in Japan.

Mess. I was thinking WW for some reason so was expecting numbers in the millions.

Persona will never sell that well.

These are Japanese only numbers as well :lol

The only thing I could find about WW sales were Persona 4 NA numbers (110k) from Siliconera but I'm not exactly sure what their source is.

I know. But I was curious about the other games as well. Very nice :3 you are all very helpful. SMT deserves all the good sales.

El Capitan Todd
That's not unexpected.
3DS is more popular among kids and women (in the case of Devils and Realist).

Yeah, I didn't want to sound surprised, but just underline this shift. Add also the Digimon developments, and you'll have a very clear idea of the NB and of the general "manga-anime" tie-in coming to the console. I remember that few months ago we were wondering if or when the PSP heritage would have come to the 3DS.

What about worldwide? I am sure Persona is more popular.

Persona 4 broke 300k wow.

Is Persona now Atlus' biggest gaming franchise?

I'm sure Persona is bigger WW but I think it would have more to do with SMT series doing ehh than the Persona series doing well(and IMO it did pretty ok).

I'm sure that Persona is Atlus' biggest franchise now.

In US at least:

SMT: Devil Summoner - 43k
SMT: Digital Devil Saga 1 - 51k
SMT: Digital Devil Saga 2 - 43k
SMT: Nocturne - 60k

Persona 4 also sold 110k and Devil Survivor sold 40k according to Siliconera.

Also we know Soul Hackers on 3DS was somewhere above 21k according to NPD (first month), might be like 30k. I'm expecting SMT IV to sell better than Nocturne in US.

Of course.
Kind of amazing for a franchise that hasn't had a proper new entry in 5 years. I guess it goes to show how effective they've been at keeping that flame alive/milking it/blueballing us depending on the way you choose to see it. Hell, even these P4G numbers on a console that's not doing too hot indicate pent-up demand.

Yessssss! Praise the lord! It deserves it. Persona's characters, art style, gameplay and music was such a breath of fresh air in the jrpg genre.

The music imo are simply some of the best in gaming and Soejima's art style is godlike.

The SMT series in general is a breath of fresh air in JRPGs. Also Meguro has done great work on other SMT game OSTs besides Persona, as well as other composers.

I'm not trying to discredit Persona or anything but the only real competition it has is EO and SMT.

Persona 4 is not a SMT game in Japan. I don't see the theory of Persona 4 being the appetizer for the main meal here.

Definitely. The fact Atlus is pretty much its own competition in different flavors of the dungeon crawler niche is interesting in the sense that they've managed to keep this niche alive so well.

To an extent, Chun does the same with the Mystery Dungeon series (although being attached to so many big franchises probably helped a lot).

Well, certainly being attached to Pokémon helps a lot :D

...But they should reconsider the length of dialogues. They were ridicolously long and not interesting in the Gates to Infinity's demo. Damn.

I've been trying to get into the SMT series but I don't have the time right now, and the only way I can play on a ps2 is through my cousin and he took it with him to uni :/

I wonder how many people didn't get P4 because it was released on PS2 in 2008. If it was a sizeable amount I could definitely see it happening but P4 is the best-selling entry...

I really think Sony should get Atlus to release P5 on PS4 and PS3 so they can build a base for the next one. I mean at this rate P6 is going to come out in 2016 (assuming they are going to follow the P3/P4 dev time) on the PS3....thats just absurd.

Won't this be the same, unless the game comes out this year or early next year it will be in a similar position of releasing in last gen's hardware when next gen if in full swing (the ps2 also sold a heck of a lot more than the ps3).

It might even be in a worse position, considering PS3 offered BC while PS4 won't.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Couldnt have been that many people.

I think that the PS3 only needed to sell to the "right" people and as far as "core gamers" go, the PS3 is definitely the home console of choice. I just hope they can get it out by the end of 2014.

I didn't consider this but then again...

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I wonder if it's safe to assume that Persona 4 (vanilla + P4G) has sold more-or-less a million worldwide?

The best selling game in the Megami Tensei series is Persona, followed by Devil Summoner.

[PSX] Shin Megami Tensei: Persona (Atlus Co.) {1996.09.20} - 201.147 / 391.556
[SAT] Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner (Atlus Co.) {1995.12.25} - ¿ / 355.656

Considering they apparently did a bit more than 500k in Japan, that's almost equivalent to saying they did as well abroad as in Japan. That seems bold.

Holy market contraction, Batman!
I was under the impression their franchises had sustained the transition from last gen to this gen pretty well but it seems the previous transition hurt them pretty bad. Were all Sat/PS1 Megaten titles in that ballpark?

Iirc pretty much every jrpg contracted after the PS1 era. For some reason they sold amazingly on PS1. (correct me if I am wrong though)

Bamco is the biggest 3rd party right now in Japan and the 3DS is the most popular Plattform, they also had strong DS support..... So it's no rocket science that they are pushing as much as possible on 3DS xD

They're also decidedly not that relevant outside of Japan, so the incentive to make everything for 3DS is extremely high given it's the runaway winner in the region they make most of their money in.

But the PSP got by far the lion's share of their support last gen right?
