All charts launch-aligned. All data from Famitsu.
Weekly numbers presented in logarithmic base 1,000 for clarity. In that case, zero units are represented by one unit.

Note, since this draws only from the top 30 it does not represent smaller titles.
e.g., software sales of zero are assumed if the console has no games in the top 30.

mIxGhE9.png

Tally of the number of titles for that platform in the top 30 for each week.
Certain weeks may have titles that aren't represented. These are the PS3's 7th and 25th, and the Wii's 4th and 23rd.

Feel free to criticize or point out mistakes.

Now that is shocking, the Wii U decreased!

But it seems Capcom made the right choice to up-port RER.

3DS games are showing legs.

Looks like Battride destroyed the Climax Heroes series. Is it also Eighting developed?

Wii U amazes me. I never thought the console would do well, but it's performing much worse than I had expected.

For what it's worth:

Pikmin Week 1 Sales: 101,299

GC Sales Week before Pikmin: 10,100
GC Sales Week of Pikmin: 25,224

Pikmin 2 Week 1 Sales: 161,930

GC Sales Week before Pikmin 2: 5490
GC Sales Week of Pikmin 2: 8703

Yeah... not sure how many units Pikmin 3 is really capable of moving.

Do people actually believe that Pikmin 3 will be a console seller?

I think it's interesting that New Super Mario Bros U has crawled past half a million, eclipsing any Vita game.
Normally a half-million seller on any platform looks great, but not so much on the Wii U because what else would people buy?

The only way we'd see a localization is if they completely overhauled the game ala Ouendan/EBA. Game is hella Japanese.

I might be mistaken but I think I remember either Iwata or Sakamoto saying that they want to bring it over in some fashion. Not if they would go as far as to Westernize it though.

I think it is reasonable to expect that it will increase console sales by at least as Soul Sacrifice on the Vita, and that is a pretty low bar.

I have no idea what the week-of bump will be, but I'm guessing it will elevate the Wii U's week to sales to something like 15k-20k a week.

Soul Sacrifice didn't bump the Vita to 60k alone, it came a week after the price-drop.

Pikmin 3 will perform like P4G/Hatsune Miku on Vita, with 30-35k HW sales for one week before going right back down.

?? SMT4 just outsold SMT3 with not a big upgrade, so how does this make any sense. I think we should have learned by now that graphics are not the important thing for many series in Japan at this point. Besides Nirolak was talking about hardware sales and PS3 is at the end of its life anyway. If the 3DS was more powerful the best option would have been PS3/3DS, but now I would say its definitely going to be on PS3 with possible Wii U/Vita ports if there are any deals in place.

wouldn't it be a downgrade going from persona 4 golden to a persona 5 on 3ds? think about it? i don't think it is comparable to smt4. unless nintendo shelled out big many i highly doubt atlus would take a step back to put it on 3ds unless it was guaranteed to sell like double the amount it would sell on ps3/vita.

:/

I guess you're probably right. I think it potentially make more on an impact if it ends up being a fantastic 40/40 game but I guess that's hard to say.

There are no guarantees, but 3DS is the hardware with the bigger userbase, lower development cost, and already has a stream of successful Atlus titles. Seems like a much safer bet.

So since we're on the topic anyway, what platform do you think P5 would have the biggest impact on as an exclusive?

Biggest impact on hardware sales that is, not the sales of the game.

I guess the PSV or Wii U, looking at the bad sales for both.

I don't see it being a real lasting impact either though.

Do people actually believe that Pikmin 3 will be a console seller?

that's not the point. The point is, Pikmin 3 will be the first relevant game for the system since lego city. It had chances to sell. It is better than the actual nothingness.

WiiU is like a dying animal...

Do people actually believe that Pikmin 3 will be a console seller?

Lots of people were pegging G&W, DQX, and MH3U as a console seller. I gotta say, I thought the latter 2 would be console sellers as well.

WiiU went from 11.398 to 22.829 the week DQX and G&W dropped.

Soul Sacrifice didn't bump the Vita to 60k alone, it came a week after the price-drop.

Pikmin 3 will perform like P4G/Hatsune Miku on Vita, with 30-35k HW sales for one week before going right back down.

From 5K to 35K is much more significant than previous Pikmins have been able to do. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Catherine is on PS3 and 360.
P4A is on PS3 and 360.
Persona 5 will be on [...] and [...]

You can fill the gaps on your own.

EDIT:I am so tired of this debate.Yet I can't stop participating every single time... :p

Aha, thanks. I consider myself an absolute disaster for predictions so I don't use to participate, I guess that it would have been fun doing it in this case (pretty easy to say after it happening! haha).

I'm really glad it did well, Megaten for life.
Definitely. If this had under-performed then the future of mainline SMT would have been in serious jeopardy.

To be precise, P4G: 13k -> 34k and Hatsune Miku: 10k -> 50k. Miku had the bundle which helped I guess.

Pikmin 3 has the potential to bump WiiU numbers into 30k region but who knows how low the WiiU will go. There doesn't seem to be a baseline for it yet.

Chris, what does the "80-100%" thing you keep sticking on most numbers mean?

Like here:

15./07. [3DS] Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission <TBL> (Bandai Namco Games) {2013.02.28} (¥5.800) - 4.164 / 201.065 <80-100%> (-11%)

That's been on DB Heroes for over a month straight, it's confusing.

Engine hardly matters.Catherine was the experimentation with HD consoles and P4A was the fanbase builder. You don't release the spin off on a platform you are not planning releasing the main event on.Unless they bombed really hard (catherine I know for a fact did not, I have no numbers for P4A though) there is absolutely no reason to not release P5 on 360 as well.

For the second part of your argument I have two words:Monster Hunter.

Why would they make P5 only for 3DS when they can make Persona 5 for PS3/X360 and maybe even the WiiU and then later release a portable version for both 3DS and Vita (since they have an audience on both). That's a lot of money for a single game, and they can expand the series in the west by releasing it for PS3/X360.

the reasoning is because it was a new ip and they were using a third party engine optimized for 360 and ps3 and figured why not might as well extra money but in the case of persona 5 i think sony will offer marketing support and it is pretty big ip especially with the push p4g got for vita i doubt they will let it go but i guess it could go either way. like i said we will see probably in a couple of weeks if not at tgs.

Yeah, that's an interesting point. Atlus can release P5 for home consoles, and a year later the Portable version with extras and sell two times the same game and double profit.

Like Persona 3 and 4.

Like Persona 3 and 4.

They could do this but I wonder how offering DLC will factor into their plans. I don't expect a port only a year later though.

I've never followed SMT, only played devil survivor and had lots of fun. But it seems the results have been quite good. Good for that.

As for the Wii U, yeah, it's dead.

Vita is the same as usual, not dead yet but in the ICU. Getting small doses of epinephrine to keep it alive when necessary.

I wouldn't expect a port for at least a couple of years. But when it does, you know Atlus is good for adding some new features to freshen the experience up.

I think it is reasonable to expect that it will increase console sales by at least as Soul Sacrifice on the Vita, and that is a pretty low bar.

I have no idea what the week-of bump will be, but I'm guessing it will elevate the Wii U's week to sales to something like 15k-20k a week.

Vita sales were over 60k the week of SS's release. Even if Wii U also had a bump in sales from a price drop, any numbers like that are completely and utterly impossible for it to reach barring the release of something more substantial than Pikmin. And Pikmin alone will increase baseline sales by 300-400% of their current levels, let alone whatever percentage that will need to be by the time that game finally comes.

The idea that this dismal period will have no impact on future sales of the platform is wrong.

PS3 userbase is 10 times the Wii U in userbase Japan
Xbox 360 userbase is almost 2 times the Wii U userbase in Japan

Even taking the size of the userbase into account, the PS3 version did better.

I'll take some N64 remakes and resurrections please, Iwata. Start with WinBack, then World Driver Championship and work your way from there.
On another note, My fav Namco 3DS title fell out off the Top 20. :-/

The only thing I learn from these Japanese sales charts is that Japan is only willing to buy Nintendo handhelds anymore. Doesn't really sound good for PS4 or any other home console in the future.

PS4 will be fine. It'll get the support, unlike the WiiU, unless Sony is dumb enough to chase after MS in the US and then price themselves out and neglect Japan.

Sony should do everything Microsoft is doing. Would be sick to see the shitstorm on GAF, Japan.... pretty much everywhere.
