John Carmack (on PS4/XB1): "I won't recommend one over the other at this point"

I think he's saying the PS4 isn't some monstrous leap over the X1. A good developer can make great games on either.

Having one game looking marginally better in some area isn't some big deal. Wasn't a big deal this gen, will be even less of a deal next gen.

The biggest deal to me is that XBOX left behind DVDs and have higher capacity media for games.

You sure made a lot of assumptions from his two indifferent sentences.

Because Microsoft paid him for some exclusivity on his next project and he can't recommend the competing platform. :p

C'mon guys.

You don't think John Carmack knows PS4 has a power advantage? Knowing that he knows that and him saying he wouldn't recommend one over the other, an intelligent person can conclude that he feels a good developer can make good games on both.

It isn't a difficult logical leap.

Not exclusive to Xbox fanboys. All are harsh

Nah man, on Twitter they're more ruthless and less organized. theres got to be at least several dozen that just look for certain hashtags and troll. I tweeted my reaction to the MS conference, and my mentions were flooded in regards to calling the XB1 weak versus PS4, regardless of the evidence.

There are still Xbox fans? They all seemed to vanish after the 21st May. On here, at least.
NeoGAF is most usually the antithesis of the rest of the gaming world.

How could he possibly pass judgement? He's still waiting for Sony to release how many billion transistors they have. Microsoft laid their cards on the table.

I won't recommend One other the other. Bam. THAT SLY DOG.

How you read it depends on which side of the fence you stand on.

MS: Mean parity for both systems (that special cloud sauce)

PS: Doesn't want to directly admit PS4 superiority cos he wants to make games for both systems.

maybe, like we've heard before, in practice there isnt a big difference between the two. i dunno, i'm probably just grasping at straws and twisting his wording to fit my agenda.

Dude, you can't say PS4 has any advantage until we see some actual evidence. We have statistics, but we DO NOT KNOW if 8GB of GDDR5 will outperform 32MB ESRAM + 8GB DDR3. We don't! And you DEFINITELY don't.

John Carmack's response is absolutely reasonable and should be what EVERYONE is thinking (except for the "always on, must be connected Kinect." That shit is weird).

This just reaffirms that Mr. Carmack is a very logical man in my opinion.

Sony fans hated Carmack this gen, but now he's secretly favoring PS4 but can't disclose such opinions because of NDA's and exclusive deals and corporate gagging. Who knew John could turn such a new leaf so quickly ...?

I have a strong feeling that despite the extra horsepower of the PS4, the games on both systems will be disturbing close visually and performance-wise for the obvious reasons.

February 22nd he said this:
“I can’t speak freely about PS4, but now that some specs have been made public, I can say that Sony made wise engineering choices,”

He hasn't said a peep about Xbox One.

Ps4 will win performance but the games will look and play the same.

Off topic, I can see carmack being one the few devs who'd use the cloud for megatextures compression/distribution.

Go to a load screen, connect to a server and calculate all you have too to increase loadtimes.

That could be because he knows people consider the PS3 a trainwreak technologically, so people need reassuring for the next one.

he just now, as in this threads OP, said both are solid pieces of engineering.

how is this hard people?

We do know that the PS4 has a large advantage due to it's GPU being at least a 1/3 faster in most areas!

That doesn't make any sense. Just load that stuff locally while you're at loading. Why cloud computing for texture decompression?

Again, that really doesn't matter until we can see HOW they use it. I will be honest, Microsoft has to win me back after their pathetic release show and the idiotic (in my opinion) focus on Kinect (AGAIN). I reiterate that the issue of the interfacing between the different types of RAM and the games and how they're programmed still exists. We have to wait until we can have quantitative experiences on both systems.

We know very little about these two consoles so it doesn't make any sense to pledge your allegiance at this point. What we do know, or what people think they know, could pull a 180 in a few weeks.

Because mega textures are huge! Also i think in theory the calculations could be done on a server while the textures stay locally.

We can't really crown a winner before the race has even started. We are in the era of diminishing returns after all, it may be PS3's advantages on paper don't translate as well to real operation.
