Wall Street Journal: Xbox One - "You own an object, but you merely access a service"

Microsoft’s Xbox One: Owning Your Video Games Is So 1994

No longer will video games be like books or old-fashioned music CDs, self-contained content that works anywhere, anytime, and can be resold or lent to any of your friends. Xbox One games are part physical disc, part online service, and tightly controlled both my Microsoft and the game publisher.

...

“This new generation of games,” as Microsoft describes it, is worth putting into context: It’s the final stage in the transition of video games from goods, sold as a physical object that you own, to services, delivered online in tandem with a disc you buy in a store.

You own an object, but you merely access a service.

Adding to the list of negative press:

Worth watching:

I just read it, Its funny that this only applies to games and not Blu Ray movies and other things, basically things MS cannot control or put these rules.

But this is spreading like wildfire, its not just "lol tis just peeps on GAF"

The article also puts focus now on Sony:

Worth watching in the months ahead: not just how consumers react, but how gaming studios and rival console maker Sony play the situation. Will the next Playstation come with a similar set of restrictions? And will be big game companies seek to cash in and charge fees for reselling second-hand games?

Which i imagine GAF and various other gaming forums will too after this Xbone thing settles a bit down and people come to terms with it

Yup, but you're still being charged as if it were a product. Oh, and also as a service, in order to access the online component.

Worst of both worlds.

It is also on the front page of Forbes

As being discussed in other threads, it's worth noting that in the EU it is legal to resell digital licenses. Online platforms have ignored this for now, but it's still true and it will probably catch them.

which is exactly how they'll avoid any legal issues and why it's not violating any consumer rights.

it's just giving you a different product, with a different service, with (arguably, though I think it's pretty obvious at this point) a shittier value proposition.

Devastating.

Sony, you have been given a golden opportunity to rule the world as a benevolent king.

I don't try to hate on MS/Xbox per se, but I hope the bad news spread throughout the mainstream media as well and that the box flops HARD due to customer boycott and better alternatives, so they are enforced to revisit their crap DRM decisions and learn a lesson for the future.

I don't understand why we don't have OPTIONS, like d/l game day of release or buy in store. Fuck Microsoft.

I honestly can't believe how they thought they could pull this off... It is hilarious at this point.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
This is escalating. And I'm happy about it: MS need to comprehend how wrong they are, and how much this is an horrible disaster.

Indeed.

We could even see another PS2 situation if Sony plays their cards right.

Right now, Sony has a penalty shot with no wind, at just 1cm to the goalpost. It's their biggest chance for dominating after PS2 era, I hope for the sake of gaming they won't blow it.

I hope this is everywhere even the news. People basically don't own the game they buy. I want this company and console to crash and burn. I have no sympathy for such disgusting acts. The mainstream deserves to know everything before they blindly decide to buy this in droves

A simple solution for MS: make it possible to play games without tying them to your account. In this case the disc is required of course.

This solves the problem, except for DD-only games. Boom, backlash averted.

It's gross. I don't see why MS and publishers think they should be allowed to do it. Good on mainstream media for taking notice and pushing the issue.

There are 3 systems on the market that deal with physical games without these restrictions, and they should be around for years to come (3ds, vita, wii u)

There are two systems offering extremely similar graffics to an audience that could distinguish HD from SD or bluray from DVD not many year ago (360 and Ps3)

Why would anyone jump on next gen when these systems will still be selling well in the coming years, with titles released on both generations of hardware? Prettier exploding barrels?

Wow, mainstream outlets care more about this than some of the video game outlets!

Glad the "real news" has jumped on. There were some articles in Venturebeat and techcrunch as well.

This is exactly what we want. The more informed the public is on this the better. This would be even better if it makes the evening news.... It dropped too late last night to hit the news circuts...

Why do I think they are going to fuck this up. :(

Because its Sony. For every good thing they do they usally make a dumb mistake to fuck it up. I fear if Sony doesn't take advantage of this console gaming will die/kill off a good bit of the industry this gen and our iOS overlords will become dominant.

Funny thing about this article. According to it Nintendo is a non-entity in the Video game market. Nor is it worth it to the WSJ to mention that the Wii U exists and has no such DRM. The only mention of Nintendo is as a long gone player from the SNES era.

And people said it was just sonygaf moaning and others wouldnt care and just buy an xbone. It seems mainstream press are getting the message out there about how this is going down.

All Sony has to do is get the musicians to play The Rains of Castamere at this point. That's all that's left. Don't fuck it up.

It's the worst of both worlds for consumers: you pay for the hardware and pay for the games but don't really own them. If they really see Xbox as a service they should charge $X a month for access to all games on the system to download for free. The console itself should also be free like a cable box (possibly with a service contract): you're only charged for it if you fail to return it after you cancel your subscription. That would be an interesting model. Netflix, Spotify, etc. don't make customers pay extra for special hardware or individual pieces of media, why should Xbox if it's a service?

It was never just neogaf, IGN and Gamespot polls also heavily favored the PS4.
