Never played Kingdom Rush, should I just skip to the second or is it worth playing the first?

Looks like the games are hugely influenced by Pixeljunk Monsters, which is fine by me.

I would recommend playing both of them-play the first one. It's top notch.

I like it way better than PJM, because you don't have to run around and collect money. In tower defense games, I hate babysitting my heroes and/or builders. All of the heroes in KR have passive special abilities, meaning they are automatically cast so you can focus on other stuff.

Anyway, to answer your question, I'd say play the first one first. Not because of the story, but simply because it's probably cheaper and they are both very similar games. It's not like there are any 'quality of life' improvements in the sequel, just different levels and units.

As I was playing KR Frontiers last night, I was thinking that it does not really date the first game at all. So if you start with the first game, you're not missing any groundbreaking features. The first game looks just as nice and plays the same. If it's cheaper, start with the first.

In fact, I wonder if they called it "Frontiers" instead of Kingdom Rush 2 because, while there are all new levels, mechanically it's almost exactly the same?

It isn't though. All of the "Advanced" towers I've come across so far are brand new. Yes the base 4 towers are basically unchanged, and yes the tower upgrade system and core gameplay is the same, but 2 would have been a fine title for this game. The new towers, upgradeable heroes, new enemies and interactive terrain make for a fully packed follow up instead of a DLC level pack.

Fair enough. Why do you think they didn't call it Kingdom Rush 2 then?

Same reason there's an Angry Birds Space, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Star Wars.

Also-just want to say that I love all the new towers so far. The rapid fire Arrow is awesome-and it ups the fire rate of adjacent towers. Also love the "Earthquake" tower ability that lights the ground on fire.

Last 3rd of KR is starting to get far more difficult. Still able to 3-star them, but I've actually lost a map here and there. Finally realized that mass necromancers + mass mecha missiles equals utter destruction. My hero still holds his own, but I wish they were more emphasized in the late game.

Anybody know if there's a way to find your tally of hours played in an iOS game? I'm trying to calculate the value I got out of some games I'm finished with, just for kicks.

I use a free app from Cydia called AppStat. Gotta be jailbroken of course.

Due to a gifting mistake, I ended up with an extra code for FFT that I'm now trying to sell.

Anybody here looking to buy Final Fantasy Tactics for iPad on the Canadian store?

Please PM me if interested, and we'll work something out through Paypal.

If nobody ends up biting, even tho the 50% off sale is near the end so it'll be a hell of a deal in a couple of days, I'll end up paying for it myself and putting it up as a prize for the iOS contest.
I don't care if it was your mistake or not, I'd feel bad knowing you were screwed while trying to help me out and you were too quick (obviously cause you're super kind) to refund me without waiting to hear my offer!

kingdom Rush Frontiers IS SO FUCKING GOOD. Thank God my girlfriend prefers to play it in her iPhone, so I can use her iPad to play it. I have a Nexus 10 so I obviously can't play it in there.

Haven't bought a game on iOS in a long time. Jumped on the final fantasy tactics sale since its one of my favorite games ever. I hope the touch controls work well here.

This bridge jungle level on KRF is SO EFFING HARD

Even bought 500 extra gold, and I lost on the last round. :0

I used very few troops and plenty of the anti-magic totems. That way the plants eat the enemies and you can bring down the magic/physical shields.
The game is just starting to get good!

Okay, you guys were right about Scurvy Scalawags. It's one of the best match 3 games I've played. And the art is gorgeous and charming. Had to buy that coin doubler to show some love.

There should be an option way down there on any page:

Dude, I wasn't even aware that you could disable mobile GAF. I usually use a user agent faker to access the desktop version. This is good to know.

I'm finding it more difficult than the original. Maybe it's because I've been starting over if there is a leak. Maybe I just need to be more forgiving, complete the level and come back when I have more tower and hero upgrades.

Haven't got KR:F yet; but from my experience with the original; the earlier levels were the hardest for me as the balance needed to be oh so just right between troops/recruits to not be overrun; and archers/mages to do damage.

Later levels I actually found to be a lot easier thanks to more powerful towers / better hero (I always used the Elf); and really only screw up thanks to new enemies or bad timing/rushes.

Never played Kingdom Rush, should I just skip to the second or is it worth playing the first?

Would recommend playing the first.

Edit: I think you made your mind up already; but another plus one can't hurt.

Beat Kingdom Rush Frontier (and loved it), but no extra levels unlocked once I did. Do I have to 3 star the last level? I only 2 starred it. I remember the trailer showing off more stuff.

The nimblebit guys have been showing off a few tidbits on twitter.

Looks like the little guys are coming back. Was abit underwhelmed with nimblequest so i am glad they are going back to what they do best.

I remember us crying for Pocket Trains when Pocket Planes came out. Seems we've been heard! :D

Press the NeoGAF logo at the top, to go to the main starting page.
In the bottom you should have a tiny 'switch back to mobile version' link to press (it is only in the main page, as far as I remember).

Scurvy Scallways is really great and IMHO front page worthy (paging Tunesmith for his usual awesome work with the OP here).
The more I play it, the more I love it and the more strategic it gets.
It's amazing how a tiny change to an established formula make the game so different and fresh (the idea is taken from Puzzle Galactrix, but here it works best).
Plus it is incredibly polished (those spoken poems are great....ARRRRRRRR).
It's a mix between Puzzle Quest and Puzzle Craft, in a fitting humorous pirates setting, was a while that I wasn't so engaged in match3 game.
A real steal for 1 dollar too.

Damn, WHQ crashes constantly. And always at the end of the quest, when the exp-distribution pops up. Then because it hasn't saved I have to repeat the last 2 turns (-ish) of a dungeon. fucking sucks.

Kingdom Rush: Frontiers is just so good. I was hesitant to buy it since screens make it look really similar to the first one, but this shit is crack.

It has always been a challenging game-and this new installment is no different. It sucks to screw up in the last minutes.

Yeah, I ended up beating it with a tack similar to that. Playing KRF and KR side by side pretty much. Working nicely, when one gets frustrating, the other's there.

Also thinking about (in KRF) going back to old levels to level up other heroes...

Only played Scurvy Scallways a little, second island, but the challenge is already there somewhat, and it seems different enough from your normal match-3 games with the collecting loot and fighting enemies on the board combined with map to explore rather than just one continuous level until you lose.

Beat Kingdom Rush Frontier (and loved it), but no extra levels unlocked once I did. Do I have to 3 star the last level? I only 2 starred it. I remember the trailer showing off more stuff.

Yeah, GDJustin mentioned earlier there's no bonus levels yet, but the original added them in later updates, so this will probably do the same.

Still, you have all the Heroic and Iron Challenges for each level, and quite a bit of achievements to hunt down like veteran on the whole campaign, that will probably add a good 10-20 hours and a ton of challenge to it. I started at veteran, but didn't last long and went to normal. On like the 8th or 9th level, definitely enjoying it just as much.

Would have been pretty neat to see the app have the original levels too (maybe open up at the end), with the ability to unlock both versions towers to play with in all the levels, so you could try these levels with the original towers and the original levels with these towers.
