I want someone to record Melee and Brawl with Mario and Bowser on Battlefield in idle poses to compare.

Where is that footage from?

Also, GODDAMN this game is impressive, visually.

All my fears reassured today. Thank you based Sakurai

Edit: NEVERMIND ALL OF MY FEARS HAVE RETURNED

Feel like its an excuse, but if it's a card limitation why not make some of the content be digitally downloaded to the SD card as a "required update". Or they can tone down the graphics more :/

Sakurai has said in the past that he doesn't want to focus on the increasing the roster size, so I'm already expecting a roster only slightly bigger than Brawl.

The news only reconfirms that point.

That would mean they'd have to drop a lot of characters already

Ganondorf should wield a great sword with one fucking hand. Badass, not only that, but his other hand should always be shrouded in some aura from which he fires magic attacks.

Or he can just have C.Falcon's template again.

If they get rid of ike to make room for chrom, i'd like to see a strong, heavy swordsman, and Ganondorf/Demise would do the trick.

Because not everyone has their 3DS connected to the internet?

Even though they should.

I don't think the roster will be too small. I'd guess Sakurai's just trying to dial back people who think we're getting 60+ characters.

I very much think he'll go for a 50 character sweet spot, give or take a few. 45 at the absolute least. In a game like this, characters mean a lot. They are basically the full advertising power when it comes right down to it.

On the other hand, I was sure Brawl would have a 50 character roster... but if I keep saying the next Smash will have 50 characters I have to be right eventually.

Damn, that's upsetting about the 3DS's hardware causing limitations for the Wii U version.

Well looks like we might not get as big a cast as we wanted, either we get very few newcomers, or some veterans get cut.

Yea so I'm wondering if they're dropping chars like Falco/Wolf entirely, Just having Pikachu for pokemon, Link for link (no TL) etc

Okay, let's not be seriously ridiculous here. Pokemon is too big of a franchise to have just one character. Come on....

Worst news we could possibly get next to Sonic not coming back.

I already dread the tears people are gonna get when their main is cut.

I'm wondering if the limitations have to do with the 3DS resolution. Because that's really the only limiting factor I can think of for the system at all. Big stages would suck, and if the game is designed around smaller stages some characters might have to be adjusted a bit to compensate?

Certainly no reason for a reduced roster.

And I find it hard to believe that DLC isn't being considered. Not having DLC is throwing so much money away.

Agreed. Considering Brawl had 35 (39 if you wanna get more technical with ZSS, Pokemon Trainer as 3 separate characters, and Zelda/Shiek), we already have 3, meaning there could be about 12 new comers to total 50. That's honestly the most I'm expecting.

Kinda bummed about the 3DS and the Wii U version needing to have the same amount of characters. I would LOVE a Smash Bros console game with just a ridiculous sized roster. I don't even care if the balance sucked, to me the variety would make up for it.

It is scary to think what veterans won't return.

I wouldn't mind some of the clones being removed in favor of newcomers, but I'm sure not everyone feels the same way as me.

He didn't say he'll have to cut -- only that it's a possibility. He said "some characters might have to be reduced" (as in their abilities scaled back), and "we're trying to get in as many characters as possible." If Ice Climbers is one of the character posing technical problems for the 3DS, I imagine Olimar is another, since he has a gaggle of Pikmin that follow him around at all times. I wouldn't assume they'll be cut, but the way they play may be tweaked.

Yeah, it sounds the right interpretation for his words.

Best case scenario = huge roster, but 3DS versions of characters are scaled back

That's my biggest worry. Snake was great in Brawl. I'll be sad if he doesn't make it in SSB4.

I'd hope that unique movesets won't get cut and it's mostly just the clones on the chopping block... although who knows what crazy things can happen. Gonna be a fun year of speculation! :)

Too bad Nintendo didn't have a press conference. The roars of the audience collectively losing their shit at the Megaman reveal would have been nice to behold.

- DLC is a possibility, but not currently in the cards
- Gameplay will be somewhere between Melee (fast and competitive) and Brawl (slower and casual)

Sounds great, thanks for posting. Roster cuts are worrisome, but at the same time I can't imagine them removing too much. Like if they had to make a choice between Wii Fit Girl and say, Ganondorf, I want to believe they'd keep Ganondorf.
