Moribito - 1

Well that was...tranquil. Seriously dat animation. Dat voice acting. Dat atmosphere.

This looks like something beautiful. I picked watching this show because I was told that it focuses sort of a mother-son relationship (not in the wrong way AnimeGAF), which is something I rarely see in a fantasy adventure anime. So I'm going in completely blind here.

But still, this looks beautiful. I can't wait to see the character interactions from here on out.

When Numata is in charge of animation direction, everything sure moves a lot more than in other episodes, one of the most ‘extreme’ cases is certainly the super-smooth movement and lip-synch in ‘Kannagi’ #2. However, Yutaka Yamamoto wasn’t really happy with it as way too many drawings were used. Episode 1 had 6000 animation frames while episode 2 had 12000 (!) animation frames, that’s a jump of 100% (the other episodes had 4000-5000 as far as I know). On the DVD audio commentary he put the blame on Numata, but I can’t imagine that he’s the only one at fault. I mean, it’s not like Numata worked alone on that episode, there was still the episode director after all. And as director, Yamamoto himself was supposed to keep track of budgetary issues like the number of animation frames used. Apparently, he found out way too late about it since the episode was corrected for a later broadcast & DVD (some of the lip-synch was removed and such). As I said, Numata is definitely someone who loves to make everything move a lot, but I’m not sure if he would ignore instructions from the director(s) like some people accused him of. Either way, Yamakan probably prefers not to work with him anymore…

Episode 2 of Kannagi was the Numata episode, right?

Right.

It's too bad they didn't do a girls sing version of Panzerlied...

OH WAIT!

I'm going to be horrified, though, if Panzerlied becomes well-known enough in Japan that it somehow leads to them repealing Article 9 and re-militarizing. Historical irony, that.

Japan doesn't need Panzerlied to stoke the flames of militant nationalism.

The Chinese GuP fanbase was pretty pissed because of the Yukari/JSDF tank documentary.

propaganda vehicle for a new militarism etc.

So wait Vetti. Explain that to me again. So there was an ancient battleship that could manipulate space and time. And for whatever reason it split into millions of pieces all across the galaxy. So you want to marry Rachel to unify the galaxy so that you can avoid your impending death (that you just mentioned that you know is going to happen soon. Just now. I don't know how you know that, but I wager you have more knowledge into your attacks than I do, so go on) by finding these pieces and putting the ship back together.

Sounds totally fine. No problems with that plan whatsoever. None. Well, there are a few.
1. What are you basing all of this information on?
2. How many pieces did you say there were? Millions? Oh yeah, they'll find all of those pieces in no time.
3. Assuming you (somehow) get EVERY piece of that ship scattered throughout the galaxy, how the HELL could you possibly know how to put it back together?

So, to summarize, Vetti is going to die soon. How soon, I'm not sure. But his plan to avoid this death is:
1. Marry Rachel, the daughter of the Pope of the Black Cross, despite her having no interest in him whatsoever.
2. Use the marriage to unify the galaxy.
3. Start searching for the...I forgot how many pieces there were, what was it...oh yeah, MILLIONS of pieces of some ancient spaceship scattered throughout the whole galaxy. The whole galaxy. All of it.
4. Use these millions (again, millions) of pieces to rebuild a spaceship based on a technology that modern engineers are completely unfamiliar with. Oh yeah, and there's no blueprint or anything. They just have to figure it out.

...all in time to save him from his death, which he merely describes as "soon".

Well, I don't know about you, but other than the part where this process would take at LEAST a century from the sound of it, I'd say we've got a winner on our hands.

Okay, I've completed the episode and those seem to be the only two cuts that received any sort of significant alteration. The original television broadcast seems to be essentially impossible to find, so I went ahead and made the gifs in case I was the only one with the ability to do so. Interesting stuff.

Oh hey the concept's sorta like Upotte.

This show is still an "I don't even" kind of show at this point. Kinda sucks that the MC had to get forced into doing Tankery through intense peer pressure, but eh I know the story's gotta move on somehow.

What in actual fuck they're on an aircraft carrier

Yes, its a lot better than Upotte and they have cities on aircraft carriers. Because its awesome and stuff.

Asking because watching the wrong dub is a crime

While that may be true, this is certainly a great dub. However I grew up (lol) watching dubs so Im used to even very bad ones.

Revolutionary Girl Utena 1

I sincerely doubt that the men's uniform for the school is tight red shorts. Mostly because the other boys shown in the background are all wearing mint green suits. And the girl in the OP looks like Papillon from Gao Gai Gar Final.

Yeah. Anthy is a dead ringer for GGGF's Papillon.

This is some absurdly dramatic music for an informal meeting of the Student Council. Also, this rose frame thing is beginning to bug me. "For now I am his Bride"? So what, is the Student Council a free love cult or something?

Onion Kingdom sounds like a rad place. Bet they have Onion Knights there like Luneth and Davos Seaworth.

The hell are these shadow puppets about?

Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. This song is kinda creepy. Wow, so uh, does the Champion have total rights to the Rose Bride, then? Why would anyone agree to that?
Yo, f'get pullin' swords from stones. Pullin' a sword from yo' bride's breast is where it is at. Also, World Revolution is an awesome song.

This show is kinda weird.

Yeah, the anime definitely did not bring up that stuff.

You just said the understatement of the year. Utena is beyond weird sometimes. It might even be described as ANIME!

There's my Roger Ebert blurb review. Unlike Ebert however I consider Video Games, along with Anime and Pick Ups, to be the best Arts of our time.
Now that's more like it! I'm satisfied enough, thanks Tamerlane... keep up the good work (and embrace the chit-chat, it doesn't really discourages informative posts like yours).

Many thanks for doing this comparison, Mad Pierrot. As he likes it, Mr. Numata sure went overboard! At least I'm glad I was able see his 'untainted' vision first. :p

Sure, especially if the tv version of episode 2 doesn't match the animation style of the other episodes of the show.
Inconsistency in animation style is not automatically a bad thing. Skilled animators should be allowed to express their individual styles, within reason.
Exactly! Homogeneity would restrain the possibility of animators (and more) to imprint some of their own character to a project. These people also want to have fun while working and invite and see what close pals can do as well, so inside a big series/OVA project they have a opening they probably wouldn't enjoy working on their own, it gives more opportunities. A varied visual approach, specially on episodic works, can also be appealing for other people than those constant followers, attract different ones, and consequently can be offered with that notion in the mind of the producers.

Kaiji 4

A Rock Solid Plan that suddenly became Paper-thin when someone considered the same strategy. Along with more psychoanalysm on the monster that is gambling.

I don't know why Kaiji acts a bit cocky, but it's all apart of the #masterplan

Cast and music announced.
Full cast list (thanks Ikari, I just copied and pasted :p):
Paiman - Aya Hirano
Huh, I thought she's been struggling to get work as of late? Or did that end up being mere circumstance.

That's what I've been told after all this years of the first Sonic the Hedgehog being the only one of the saga I've played; I got my SEGA Master System II console in a good offer for a bundle with that game included, but bought it mainly to play the magnificent Wonder Boy series. I liked that first Sonic and since then I've always wondered if the other versions of the games were really that different, to the point of not making the necessary step to purchase another at the time. I shall rectify that, someday...
Sonic 1 GG/MS is probably the closest to the Genesis/MD games that I've played not only because it features a large number of the same zones albeit differently arranged. It definitely feels a lot more like a platformer than a speed fest. Everything from there on out takes more of a divergence I feel; probably due to limitations. The Genesis/MD games have far more sprawling levels and divergent paths where the GG games end up being, not necessarily linear since there's still a lot exploration you can do but more restrictive.

There's something to be said about the Chemical Plant Zone in Sonic 2 on the MD though....

I'm just glad he compared it to Redline and not Resident Evil 4.

Everytime I see the RE4 comp I cry inside. I can't stand that fucking game.
Ah, Nakama. It's far to find another human being willing to share that they hate RE4. My only exposure to the RE series and it did nothing to convince it was worth trying again.

Yes it is certainly a fine example of the genre.
And by fine I mean terrible and yet somehow fun. I blame it on Mizore being amazing.
One of the Rie's better roles: i.e not squealing and yelling at people to shut up.

Actually I can think of one anime where best girl won.
Shuffle
Yes! Those Kaede fans tears were so, so sweet. All though in comparison to all the other girls, that's not really a contest.

Sooooooo good. Should I even bother watching Season 3 when Season 2 has been so good?
This is largely too late now since you've started already but Try's a pretty good season. It doesn't have the overall quality of Next and it feels like it meanders a bit too long before it gets down to the good stuff but the payoff is definitely worth it I think. Plus it has Houko Kuwashima who is basically top tier.

For your own sanity, I wouldn't go onto Revo/Evo afterwards. Skim through the OVA's for the enjoyable Naga and then pretend nothing has been produced since then like people do with DtB2 or anything Eureka Seven related after the first series.

Need to catch up with current season but the lure of Sono Hanabira is proving to be too strong. 6/8 games done and there's still no pairing to beat the best couple of Mai x Reo. (There's a method of showing which is the seme and uke by how you position the names right? I can't remember which is which.)

Not sure how this applied to Kannagi, where Numata most likely ignored the director and went overboard with the budget. And producing better animations if you use twice as much animation frames than your collogues for the other episodes isn't that stunning either.

Yeah. 4 has one of the worst characters in the history of gaming in Ashley, a terrible story, and the worst most unfun tank controls known to mankind, the total package being an absolute chore to play. Maybe the Wii version plays better dunno but the PS2 version was junk.

So yeah the TLOU = RE4 of this generation comparisons scare the shit out of me. Hopefully this is more like UC2 or something, Ill find out in a few hours shrug.

we haven't even seen PS4-tan yet.

Uuuuuh, but we've seen U-tan. I don't need to see Kaname if I've already got Mao.

VALVRAVE 10 SPOILERS I WAS GOING TO POST IN THE VALVRAVE THREAD BUT FUCK DEDICATED ANIME THREADS

So, now that I've had a chance to breathe, here's what I really am thinking about last night's episode:

It's nice to see that FINALLY, there are some repercussions for "Resigning" one's humanity. Haruto is very, very clearly unwell. L-Elf is so aware of what is going on in this show, he knows better than to stand in the way of Shoko's inevitable rise to power. Speaking of, the juxtaposition of Shoko's "Let's be greedy!" speech with the uttermost inevitable execution of that philosophy in Haruto's rape of Rukino was nice. Almost nicer than the sheer shock of it happening. Parently the Dorssians are Space Nazis, which I guess I should have seen.

But about what happened at the end, and I don't really know how to ask this politely, so I'll just get to the point: did Haruto rape Rukino? I mean, the obvious answer is YES, OF COURSE, HOW COULD YOU NOT SEE THAT, but at the same time, Rukino's shown herself to not be above using Haruto to get what she wants. So I think it's kind of both.

Then again, CODE GEASS SPOILERS
I'm in the camp that thinks that Lelouch's murder of Euphemia and the Elevens was entirely premeditated, so I clearly can't be trusted when it comes to this sort of thing in Geass-like shows.

I hope this doesn't devolve into a debate about
who is and isn't being narrow-minded with their definitions of what is and is not rape, but I felt that it was worth asking the question, and apologize for anything offensive about that.

Sure, I was talking more in general terms after seeing that hosannainexcelsis reply.

Even then, think on another episode where Mr. Numata worked, episode 4 of Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, and how it was rumored the repercussion it had slashed more 'different' collaborations from happening. That is the kind of homogenization that ruins the illusions, the expectations of some poor souls for the benefit of the many. And it was something the staff actually wanted to do, for themselves in their best interest too, so it was kind of a sad situation in general.

Kaiji 5

I forgot about the part where they had other cards besides rock, but it proved to be useful. The constant hammering of being called a coward rushed him into his final match, which allowed for Kaiji's victory... although there's still 40 minutes on the clock until Card Battles on ships end.

Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam 45

Straight up cold.
Mashmyre dies, and all Haman has to say is "Oh well, guess I'm down one point." Dude LOVED you, Haman. Gave his LIFE for you. So, so cold.
Meanwhile, Beecha and Elle almost admit their feelings for one another, because Roux x Judau has to happen.

WHO DIES NEXT EPISODE?
