Don't you still need your cable box to be connected to the xbone?
I have cable and I use my cable box, at no point did I wonder whether I should be able to use any of my consoles for TV, I play candy crush on my phone while my wife reads manga on her ipad, my PC in my living room is on for the sole purpose of goofing around on gaf, all of those devices are used at the same time while one of my consoles is running, how do you fold all that shit into one device? I don't need an xbone to do all of that, most likely the xbone won't allow me to do all those things simultaneously.
It's very ambitious to try to force the consumer to channel every single service through the xbone but that's more for the sake of profitting off of all those different activities than making it easy for the consumer, all those devices serve a different purpose and that convergence doesn't always make things better for the end user, and that is the problem MS faces.

Advertising can't sell something that people find undesirable. MS has spent huge advertising budgets for other things recently and it hasn't made them successes (Windows phone, Surface, Win 8)
Advertising helps when the object, by itself, is interesting. People found Kinect interesting at launch. But that's not enough to sell a $500 XBone this time out.
Yeah they'll advertise it then people will end up doing a google/youtube search. The amount of negative things i've seen for the console that pop up first is unbelievable.

My 360 was my favorite system last gen too. I'm still not getting an Xbox One, because it hates consumers, and I am a consumer. It's a pretty simple philosophy... I think, anyway
But as I said in another topic, there is no precedent for how bad things are right now with the Xbox One's disastrous unveiling. Not even $599.99 matches it. Either Microsoft has to drastically change policies to fix the course of the ship, or it will get destroyed by PS4. No system is going to win being aggressively attacked by Gamestop, Redbox, Gamefly and the full might of 90% of all game fans across the net, as well as every media outlet savaging the platform day after day.

Sony may have outsold Microsoft's console worldwide, but do you think most people see PS3 as a success? Nope!

Well I am not sure I get your drift. How is this irrational? Microsoft is denying all the gamers with no internet access to thier games. Does it not make sense they need to replace the sales with TV watchers nationwide? It is an all in one system. Lastly on the forum topic, I do not see why MS XBone would not be in limited qty, very much like the original Wii. I waited three months to find one after launch.

If Xbox Live is a making money then there are probably ways they can leverage that service while getting out of the console business itself. Let's face it, MS has no idea what they're doing when it comes to the hardware side. The original Xbox lost them heaps of money, the 360 was a pathetic cheap box compared to the PS3, the RRoD problem cost them billions, and the Xbone is pretty much a cheap media box with an overpriced camera.
The 360 was a success because at the time xboxlive was much better service then anybody else had. They should focus on that side of the business, rent out their "cloud" service, work with Nintendo, and Sony and PC developers to build a better more robust online component. Maybe one day we'll finally get cross-platform gaming!

How about all the sports fans who want to run fantasy leagues using the XBone/ESPN partnership. I think Microsoft is pacing for the years to come. In due time there will be alot of promotions directed to non-gamers to appeal to the tv aspects of the box. This is also the reason why DRM has been introduced to devalue the physical disk. Ten years from now gaming will be all digital. MS will already be there.

No one uses nfl.com for real leagues. The fantasy stuff is useless as it currently is. To be useful, it has to support multiple teams per user and at least connect to espn, cbssports, and yahoo.
