I've said many times I value commentaries, OVAs, behind the scenes interviews, and drama CDs way more than any physical book that doesn't really add much to the show itself.
That's not to say that actor commentaries are really all that interesting, since they're usually just a bunch of people making platitudes at each other, but there are a lot of director commentaries that just don't make it over.
Yamato 2199 actually has director commentaries on each set, but of course they didn't bother to sub those features in the JP release (even if the actual episodes are subbed, which is weird but whatever). That makes me actually spending the 80 bucks per volume to get it seem like a much less worthwhile proposition.
That said, I don't think any anime DVD will have as much as Rightstuf's Aria releases, which have all sorts of video content and interviews. Even Rightstuf's more recent releases have been barebones releases unfortunately.

But if you're Japanese, and listen to the original dialogue while doing other things and don't watch the screen... does that make the original voice track bad?
(I completely understand what you actually mean - you should pay attention to what's on screen if you're, well, watching something - but still, just poking a little fun)
I really don't mean to attack, but really, he/she does. The dubbing industry has changed a lot since the 90s. I think that's where people get this misconception, due to the 90s/early 2000s attitude of licensing things for a quick buck, when Pokemon, Digimon, Dragonball Z were huge hits.

You have yet to give examples. Every piece I've seen from recent show dubs is worse than what we were getting in the era you are even citing.
Well, that simply can't be helped. But we can prevent the moral crimes of those who do not speak Japanese (in the case of anime) by getting rid of dubs. Exactly background noise for when background noise is needed.
Not using content that was never intended as such.
I'm not sure that's the same thing. At the very least, I assumed that drama CDs would be OVAs if no one had to worry about budgets.

I watch all of my anime in Aegisub.
Why not go step further and read all animes in wikipedia?

Probably not, since many drama CDs are written as audio works and not designed for visual adaptation. Radio dramas are a different medium from television, and require a different approach.

If the staff were making OVAs instead of drama CDs, wouldn't the content in drama CDs be written for animation? I think there's something I'm misunderstanding.
I used to do that sometimes...

Perhaps. A lot of drama CDs are produced before any notion of an anime existed though. Aria has several hours of drama CDs made before the anime was put together, for example.
It's just like podcasts or audiobooks (please use my audible link, lulz) here though.

People producing Drama CDs set out making drama CDs. OVAs aren't part of the consideration. If they wanted to make an OVA they'd try and procure appropriate funds and take an appropriate approach to make an OVA.
Now in a universe where budgets are infinite, drama CDs would still exist as there would still be a market for them.

Barebones releases are the worst because if I'm going to go out of my way to actually buy something it's usually because I really like it which is another way of saying I'd be daft enough to spend some extra money for a better release. Not crazy, Aniplex style money but a bit more.

I'm gonna take a good guess and say it's the female protaganist of Pokemon Black and White.

I'm not trying to say that background noise entertainment is an unprecedented thing only Drama CDs deliver though. I'm just saying that entertainment media should be consumed the way they were intended.
(as in anime is intended to be viewed, whereas Drama CDs are meant to be listened to.)

Watching heads move their mouths for like 5 minutes at a time is just so rewarding!
For what it's worth, whilst they call them Artbooks, the books which ship with NISA releases tend to consist of material re-purposed from the booklets which tend to ship with Japanese BD releases - often including translations of whatever production staff comments were included within.
Admittedly, that varies from show to show in terms of quality and quantity, but it's not like the books are just pictures and episode guides or whatever.

For me, bad TV exists to be "watched" when playing a game, but yeah, I understand your point.
Well, it's like the Nisemonogatari set that Aniplex released. I was happy to buy Bakemono, but stripping out the commentaries because they were too cheap to license them or too worried about Japanese people reverse importing them made that set a no-buy for me. I'll buy things to support them, but at some point there has to be some kind of line.

I guess I've just looked at drama CDs as something created by a publishing company as a way to advertise the source material which were only used because it would take too much effort to make OVAs. I guess that they probably bring in money to companies like Lantis, though, so they probably would exist even if it cost the same to make OVAs.
Edit: Lol, you can tell I have no idea what I'm talking about when I start using "I guess" or "probably" all of the time. :<

It seems like you missed Turn A Gundam!
Like two of these aired in the last five years. P&S English dub is plebeian trash between the mismatched and lifeless voices and the fifth grade reading level translation. This is before even taking into account the mangled audio levels that ruin most of the big moments and diminish the presence of an amazing soundtrack because Funimation has their head up their own butts over their shitty dub. Like I don't really know what to say beyond an unfamiliarity with the original making dubs passable.
