GB/WH Rumor: Microsoft dropping basically all Xbox One DRM, announcement today

IMO - great news.

Now cue all the weirdos in The Verge comment threads and elsewhere saying MS is abandoning its visionary and wonderful version of digital utopian future because whiney little gamers love the status quo.

Seriously, the Verge readers are weird.

I need:

A- Confirmation.

B- all details from the horses mouth.

All of this could be great though and just sets the precedent of not to fuck with consumers. I like it. My worst nightmare was Xbone selling in spite of their ridiculous restrictions.

I will believe it when I see it. If true though it will be fucking amazing news. Though not enough to get me to buy a One. DRM was a major issue for me, but it was hardly the only one.

Didn't the audience cheer when Sony talked about used games with Jimmy Fallon? That may have influenced their perspective as this issue being wider than just blockheaded gamers.

Not really. XBone has only been announced for amonth.

All they need to do is make an announcement and say

"YOU SPOKE WE LISTENED"

Makes them look like good guys in the end.

Full disclosure. Im getting a PS4 but now will consider an XBone down the road if true.
Why did it take them this long to listen? Why not do this at E3? Why wait till after the damage was done?

Flip flop all you want MS, it won't change my mind. Your system still lacks games. Titanfall? Will run better on my PC. $500 brick for me, offers nothing.

I started a thread earlier asking if you took Xbox One's DRM out of the equation, which system would you buy at launch. Before it was locked, the discussion was mostly about games, power, and price and heavily favored PS4. A great day for all gamers nonetheless, if this story is true.

I know I already said this but... if this is true PLEASE someone get publisher reaction asap.

And I pray this is true mainly because it's better for Xbox consumers in the end (which I doubt I'll be regardless) but also because it will be HILARIOUS to hear how they announce this. And to hear the industry apologists who insisted that this was both necessary and a Good Thing react. ;)

Even if this is true, this will be total mess for MS.

And if they will announce anything, I bet on Gamescon

So now when people buy the more expensive machine with weaker hardware, they can at least own their games. Well. That's good I guess.

If this is true, big props to the Sony for forcing the issue and even bigger props to the NoDRMSony fans for making such an impact.

I wonder how the media backtracks on all their excuses now.

Same. I'm sure that the library will bump up over time, but this makes them look even worse (assuming it's true). Those are policies we never should have had to deal with in the first place. No use in telling me 'loljk' now when you told me last week you were gonna take all my toys and pee on them.

All this means is that every fanboy and journalists and asshole who tried to argue in favor of these policies looks doubly foolish because they wasted that time defending something now everyone admits was a mistake including Microsoft and for what? Did they get paid for those days of pathetic defense? I hope they did.

I agree with you entirely. The fact that MS was thinking in this direction is a huge negative against them to me, it says they have no problem fucking us. So I will never have them as my first console like I did last gen, they did lose that privilege. But a price drop or two later and after I see there's no chance they'll put the DRM back on? Sure.

thinking on it now...im still going to hold off and keep my ps4 preorder

Want to see how things shake up and I'm not itching for anything on the One besides Titanfall...

This thread is FLYYYYING!!! Wow!

If this happens, if they actually back off this DRM/always-online bullshit, I still feel as if the damage has been done. It probably won't kill them in the long-run, but they'll have some work cut out for them to change the perception of this system. That is, if the rumours turn out to be true.

I'm waiting for another appearance of CBoaT!

Thing is, even if this rumor turns out true I would still be wary about getting an Xbone, just because of the potential of MS rolling it all back slowly over the course of the gen.

A lot of naïve people around. Every 3 months we will get closer and closer to people going all digital anyways with their games and all of this will be moot. Both Sony and MS have stated that all the games will also be downloadable on day one just as the disc versions are today. A lot of people are going all digital with the new consoles so this would be a moot point anyways since you can't trade in your digital copies of games.

I'll get one down the road if true but for them to even come out and think about that policy it's something i will always remember. 360 was my main console with my ps3 for exclusives this gen. It'll be the other way around nextgen for me.

The point is people like owning physical copies of games and the drm was nightmare. The 24 hour check in and restricting something based on someone's internet acess when there are coustomers that could potential buy your console is stupid. This everyone loves digital is bullshit.

I'm hoping this isn't the case, if only because I want to see the impact on the industry with wildly differing platform ideologies between the PS4 and Xbox One.

And EA announces the reintroduction to their online pass!

They were going to have it anyways, just not call it the online pass. Probably go with a rebranding like "EA Online Advantage" and say, hey we stuck to our word we took away the "Online Pass"

Is this the reason EA started warming up again with the Wii U? because they realized hey couldn't bet on MS and DRM as much as they thought they could?

Too little too late, even if true.

$500 and not a single exclusive game in there that I have any interest in.

Eh, fuck Microsoft and their hubris. Let them eat humble pie if it's true.

Either way, Xbone launch is sold out and the scalpers shouldn't be the ones rewarded for this.

Loving all the spin this thread lol. If MS does go through with this it's only good news for gamers.

absolutely. In another 10 years, consoles won't have disc drives and we can think about digital rights and lending for content. but now, leave discs alone.
