Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
New GameReviewAnalysis version:

The old one broke due to the new Gaf layout. Databases are up to date now (everyone and their updated impressions until up to THIS post), rest works as before (update the post you already made instead of making new ones). No new features yet, but I'll plan on implementing some stuff since I finally managed to sort out my PC woes.

Hey Toma, how should I separate the new reviews in my post? With a space? Or it should be an special character?

Just replace the content of that post with the new text you'll get from the program. That post always contains all of your information.

Thanks for the writeup. So it's basically a sandbox that isn't very compelling to play in at the moment.

That sounds about right, however to be fair, I got to admit that I noticed they made a lot of updates since I bought it, but I havent checked it out since. Some of my problems with the nature of the game are likely hard to be fixed, but they probably improved it at least by now. I'd still say waiting for a sale/bundle wouldnt be a bad idea though.

Oh fuck, this week? US and EU?

Can't comment on the quality of the analog stick on the Vita (or whatever it has as its replacement), but as long as that it okay then that game would make a perfect Vita game. The only downer could be that if you play it in public you might not hear that awesome soundtrack.

Working on 2 new smaller features for the GameReviewAnalysis tool before I'll post the voting post for this month, in case anyone was curious when I'd post it.

Could be one of the few soundtracks worth pumping out on the speakers to the innocent public XD

Yep, both.

Awesome, thanks :) Kinda sticking to this thread as my community thread lately so I am a bit out of the loop with release dates.

Voting!

RULES THIS MONTH IN SHORT: Up to 10 games, at least 4.

Why?
Because we want to offer people who first step into the thread an easy go-to list for great games. Plus it gives more attention to the titles that really deserve it.

How?
Everyone votes on his top 10 games out of the ones that already have been released AND are mentioned in the OP (So everything in Post 2). I'll tally the results and put the best 5 in the next thread. A minimum voting count of 4 is required. (I am trying some different values here to see what works for the thread. The bigger max vote count is to allow for more smaller games to get some spotlight in the ranking as well that get overshadowed by the big releases.) Feel free to vote for games that you deem "important" or the ones that you enjoyed the most. Since this is a rather communicative thread, feel free to include a short description why these games ended up on your list or a "honorable" mention if you feel that one game deserves another mention even though it wont count for your list. That way it would also make it interesting to read which games we should check out that others might have enjoyed. You dont need to "rank" the 10 games. Every list entry gets 1 point for the overall ranking.

When?
This thread is still open until the end of june, so you can drop your list in here whenever you want. You can also change your list up to the last day. I wont start the count before the month is over, so everyone has still time to revise their lists and play some games. Speaking of which, if you dont even KNOW 7 games to vote for, there are plenty free games in the OP to check out. Most of which are rather short too. Use the remaining week to catch up with 1 or 2 titles you didnt get around to yet!

Which?
Since the list got rather long, here is the complete list of games to vote for for this month:

99 Spirits
Among the Sleep
Ballpoint Universe
Candy Box
Chasm
Cry of Fear
Data Hacker - Initiation
Delver
Dust - An Elysian Tail
Fibrillation
Four Scepters
Fragment
Fragments of Him
Gallery
Game Dev Tycoon
Gunpoint
Heroine Dusk
Hope: The other side of adventure
Icefishing V
Ilamentia
Leaf Me Alone
Little Inferno
Lumiere
Mono
Moon Rising
Mr. Rescue
No one has to die
Nowhere
Patchwork
Potato Dungeon
Pulse Shift
Residue
Reus
Rogue Legacy
Save the Date
Sentinel
Skyward Collapse
The Perfidious Petrol Station
The Queen of Snakes
The Swapper
The Yawhg
Toom
Undertale
Voxel Runner

Additionally: New update for the GameReviewAnalysis program! Yes, another one with 2 new features:

1. Settings (to save your account name (not yet doing anything) and the posting link so you dont need to remember where the post is that you need to update)

2. Sort by Gaf thread mention (so you can easily filter out the games for each month):

Rogue Legacy - Rogue-lite genealogical game where when you die, you end up dealing with the genetic traits of your successors that change the gameplay. Finally!

You mean June right? xD

Voting Time!!!!

  • Dust: An Elysian Tail Incredible metroidvania like game. Beautiful art, good plot, controls very responsive even on keyboard.
  • Candy Box Addicitng game, it's a nice way to pass the time if you have a boring job. :D The game start very simple, but after some time things start to become very non-sense.
  • Little Inferno Burning objects never felt so pleasing.
  • Rogue Legacy Probably one of the most hyped games for me this year. Spend so much time with the demo, even after beatin the boss.
  • Save the Date Initially just looks like a date sim, but after the first dialogues you notice that there is something different about the game when things start to get meta.
  • No one has to die Short "adventure" game with an interesting plot and a kinda annoying UI.
  • Hope: the other side of adventure Not really a game, but it's a cool and touching experience.
  • Balpoint Universe It's a mixture of adventure with shoot' em up where you can customize your ship with parts. The customzation kinda reminds of Eihander except you can't change weapons on the fly.

I think that's all, unless I forgot some game.

I cant believe there isnt an OT for UnEpic. This game is amazing. Its seriously exactly what ive been looking for as of late.

Difficult, confusing, epic bosses, loot, a deep online mode, and much more.

Its sooooo good.

I'm LTTP on everything and that includes indies. Do people post in here about older games? Or at least games that may have gotten rejuvenated thanks to Humble Bundle? E.g. I recently finished Thomas Was Alone and Intrusion 2 :)

There will be one soon. I was prioritizing making a Sentinel thread though since its part of the june game list.

Also, Toma, I tried downloading GameReviewAnalysis from the DropBox but the .exe would crash as soon as I click on it. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, can give more details over PM.

Did you go through the other steps before downloading the .Exe file?

The exe itself is just meant for the updates, but you have to jump through some hoops before to make it work and have the correct framework etc. The alternative would be sharing the installer every time which means uninstalling/installing the thing every time which is quite a bit more hassle than just replacing it.

Also, I'd appreciate some more positive impressions on Skyward Collapse because I wasnt too fond of it on my first few hours with it.

I've been a huge fan of "balance" gameplay ever since SimEarth. As you're aware, in this relatively rare subgenre, we start with the initial titillating growth of civilization incarnate. The day-to-day micromanagement is put to the side as no one person is important, just the life of the village, of the city, of the country. A powerful force that must limit itself to help others. Too often the complexity outstrips us, and we run into decay, warfare, and chaos.

The inherent potential in these series is matched only by the difficulty in creating them. How much do you focus on the individuals? Too little, and the civilization is a mildly entertaining spreadsheet. Too much, and you get bogged down in the minutiae of single units.

As you know, Reus and Skyward Collapse both fall into this (relatively rare) sub-genre of simulation. Reus is almost certainly a more enjoyable game. From the visual style to the achievement aspect, it's rather inviting. But at the end of the day, I didn't feel like there were many choices. Do I put a Forest next to a Desert? Or a Swamp? I enjoyed the terrain manipulation and the potential it represents, but then it boils down to some strange micro stuff, like how putting chickens next to gems makes more chickens. After the first thirty seconds, I never really felt like an incredible force and never felt connected to the denizens of my world.

Skyward Collapse is a mess. It feels like a prototype and is priced accordingly. There are no smooth animations, the tutorial is a little confusing. The gameplay feels like a smattering of almost random mechanics. It reminds me a bit of early 90s PC gaming, where no one is sure what the best conventions are because the genres aren't well established. I have a laundry list of things I wish they had done differently.

Yet that feeling when you have three towns to a side but two red towns are burning ruins because you kind of secretly favored blue and built some mythological creatures to boost your score in time... it's just fun! When you see three siege engines approaching and realize you have four more turns before your defenses regenerate, it's great. Two years from now, I won't remember much about Reus, but I had a fun afternoon with Skyward Collapse and would be excited to see the idea properly fleshed out. I don't ask much more for $5, and that's why I voted for it.

So Freedom Planet put up a new demo. Same stage, essentially, but with all the various updates that've been made throughout its alpha (notably widescreen, HUD tweaks, faster recharge on the energy meter, buffs to Carol's bike, the replacement of the Sonic-like spin attack, etc) and graphical updates, both to the level and all the sprites that populate it.

Personally, I think it's improvements all-around, although there's been a bit of backlash over the manual spin attack removal. I don't think it's that huge a deal, since I preferred to attack enemies with melee than spinning, and it was a little too close to Sonic for comfort. Lilac does gain a ground-based Dragon Cyclone to make up for it, though. Carol doesn't, but then she has a friggin' OP bike. YMMV on this one, although Strife's been open to opinions on the matter.

As an alpha tester for the game, I gotta say I really like how it's shaping up so far, although it's still pretty early. We can play most, if not all, of the stages that show up on the Greenlight page, and they're even better than Dragon Valley is. I do have some nitpicks here and there, but overall, I think it's coming together to be a very fun game.

Speaking of Greenlight, the game's apparently 97% of the way to Top 100 status! Just need a bit of a push...

(Disclaimer: I am not a member of the development team, although I am a mod of the game's forum; I'm just a very enthusiastic fan.)

Played the game and features it in my Indie Series on my channel.

Voted for it on Greenlight, really liked the gameplay so far for a game still early in development.

  • Gunpoint: I like the freedom left to the player for this stealth-action-puzzle game.
  • Little Inferno: a unique atmosphere for a game which I find similar to crosswords: given a definition, you have to infer which objects to burn.
  • The Swapper: the level design is incredible, this is one really unique puzzle game.
  • The Yawhg: the game is really short, yet the game feels fresh and I like the artstyle and the music.

RULES THIS MONTH IN SHORT: Up to 10 games, at least 4.

My base 4 games for the month:

Dust: An Elysian Tail - This is amazing, and for some reason I glossed over the fact that it was in the OP and ended up playing it anyway. Story is good, combat and gameplay is just amazing. Very rewarding to play, especially for a metroidvania.
Rogue Legacy - This is some serious crazy and I'm loving it, really looking forward to the full release later this week. I find it hits rogue-like, adds in a little bullet hell and then kicks your ass. Great fun and I just couldn't put it down.
Chasm - This is another game I found well made, decent polish, the level areas are reasonably varied but don't seem to be out of place when arranged differently. Gameplay feels good, but oh the bats in death-drop areas, oh the bats.
Potato Dungeon - Quite the interesting concept, and reasonably fun to play at that!

Okay, okay, I know what you're thinking... All 2D side-scroller dungeon/rogue-like games? But really they're the ones I had fun with so far this month. I haven't gotten all the way through the list though, and I am planning to get around to a few more games this week, so I may add a few more votes, but at the moment my week is looking busy so I may not get the chance, thought I'd at least put in the minimum :)

Wow, finally checked out Ballpoint Universe. This game looks ridiculously good with several moving layers and has a a great soundtrack:

Its a shmup where you collect upgrade parts by walking around in the world and beating the scores in the levels. More than worth the 4 the dev is asking for it. It has a free demo here: http://donthackmywebsite.com/bp/WebPlayer.html

Just tried Dust: An Elysian Tail for the first time. Three things I immediately noticed:

1. I wouldnt have imagined it to look THIS good in motion. The screenshots made it seem a bit bland sometimes, but the art style actually comes surprisingly well together ingame with some fantastic effects (like the one for the spinning attack). The more there is on screen, the prettier it looks, but also the small moments are quite convincing, like grass moving or a deer standing in the background.

2. I read that the combat system isnt terribly deep, but it sure feels very satisfying. Really nailed the combat feel here, cool to see.

3. Obvious Metroidvania influences are always a plus.

I heard its not that long though, true? Definitely will keep playing this one.

8-12 hours depending on how you go about it. I'm surprised it's taken you this long to play it!

I had the same thoughts before palying the game. The animation is very fluid.

You mainly use 3 buttons for combat and some combinations, for me it works pretty well since I have a terrible memory to remember seuqences.

I'm in the 4th chapter and already up to 15 hours, but I tend to explore every piece of the level and backtracking a lot to previous zones trying to get to places that I wasn't able.

You know I'm liking this website:

http://greenlitgaming.com/category/preview/
It's entirely dedicated to games on the GreenLit, both released and on the waiting list.

There's enough websites out there for the mainstream, but not many like above.

Hey thanks for the heads up about these guys, I really like what they are doing to bring exposure for more obscure quality games on Greenlight. I actually emailed them and it turns out they already wanted to do a preview on Cactus so I sent them a build to play :D

Also, I asked this in the indie dev thread but it might be more relevant here: What are peoples thoughts on pre-orders with early build access? I'd love to hear what you think are the best and worst ways to do it, because right now we are planning out how to approach this for our game.

I'd like to buy this, but I spend so little time on XBL these days - I'd rather give my money to the developer directly for a DRM free download (since I can't access Steam at work.)

To be honest, I'm trying to use Steam as little as possible these days - preferring direct orders and Desura to make sure developers get more of a cut.
