Hiroshi Kawano and Shuhei Yoshida talk PS4 in Japan

To someone observing the E3 press presentations unfold, the narrative presented was pretty clear: Microsoft was restricting user rights, while Sony made a point in their conference that it wasn't doing a thing with them.

"There were lots of people who gave their opinions on that issue to my Twitter account before E3," SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told Famitsu magazine this week. "It's not that our hardware policies are decided strictly based on user reaction like this, but when we were thinking about what we had to bring across and how to bring it across, it was a very useful source."

Kawano also made a point of bringing up Square Enix game director Tetsuya Nomura's video appearance at the Sony E3 conference to reveal Final Fantasy 15 to the world for the first time; a move that, to Sony, justifies their opinion that Japan is still where it's at game-wise. "He received a wonderful reception at the conference, and that's something that elates us as well," he said. "People sometimes tell us that Japanese games are falling behind and so forth, but I think his presence signified that that's just not the case. We also want to provide gamers with a wide variety of games, and that's something that Japanese producers are good at. I think their presence will grow larger going into the future."

So when is the next time Sony will show off the PS4 to the public? "We're striving to find the best timing for the announcement," Kawano replied, "whether it's before the Tokyo Game Show [opening Sept. 19] or alongside it. It goes without saying that TGS is a very important event to us, and of course, we strongly feel that it has to be a place where the users are glad they came. Also, outside of that, we're preparing other opportunities and places for people to get to grips with the PS4."

I hope their third party questionnaire went out to the japanese dev communitiy as well.

It would be awesome to see japan back in the console fold.

with games like nino kuni and souls series doing good abroad. i hope they take notice.

they deserve better than the handheld ghetto.

Prior to launch, I think they need to stress their power advantage/pricing at every opportunity until even the casuals are sick of hearing about it.

should have a ps4 event before TGS to announce the system and some possible ips that were already announced earlier this year. TGS should focus on japan centric games plz.

Demon's Souls 2 at TGS plz.

Imagine this being Demon's Souls 2

They need to show a live gameplay demo of Final Fantasy 15, announce Monster Hunter PS4, and have the most exciting looking Japanese friendly console game in order to sell the PS4 in Japan. I'd also love a SCEJ JRPG

Also, I would be a very happy man if they announced Dark Souls 2 for PS4, seeing as how FROM is leading on PC (this does not bode well for the PS3 version) I'd like to play the game in 60 fps with the DS4.

Cool it seems like they're planning a japanese specific Playstation Meeting event, with launch details and a presentation focused on japanese games.
Good news, considering how Japan is focused on handheld games they need specific contents and convincing announcements to create excitement around the platform.
I expect all the major japanese players to be there.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I expect a musou title, Ridge Racer, and something gundam announced for launch, and probably Persona 5 announced for 2014.

Expecting a really major Japanese presence right now is unlikely IMO, given the 3DS and how healthy PS3 software still is.

Has there been anything tipped, or is P5 just wishful thinking?

Well, it's certainly in development. But in one of the recent "PERSONA 5!!!" threads there were some posts by Aeana and duckroll that made me think that MS has locked it up as an exclusive for the Xbox One.

Well, you probably would've said the same thing if someone suggested that MS had locked up the next Tales game as an exclusive for the 360 at the start of this gen.

this is true. but that console also had a year head start with dev kits. not this time we'll see

I don't remember the specific posts he is referencing, but I suspect he is joking and the hints were for PS4.

yeah, all those money-hatted jrpgs last gen and it got them nowhere really, I doubt they would even bother trying again this gen..... although, they do have that 1 billion $$$ they are spending towards money-hats, err, I mean games for XBone...

I really can't see Microsoft trying that exact same strategy of "pay developers not to release games on PS4" after it backfired horribly for every Japanese publisher they tried it with last gen.

I especially can't see any publishers willingly signing on with it again after what happened last time.

waiT... now that i think about it if it was exclusive to XBone it just means PS4 would get the Golden/FES superior version a year later with all these extras and stuff *.*

just like literally every JRPG that were ported to PS3 after the timed 360 exclusivity.

The days of MS money hatting japanese games are over, the experiment has failed and I'm sure japanese devs are more wary now than ever before. You don't want to alienate the goodwill of your fanbase by splitting them up, unless of course the console it's on is in a dire situation. This is all opinion, but it's one I'm fairly confident in.
