The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy reprint coming this summer

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I was lucky enough to get this - after The Book Depository (UK) cancelled my order, I went to Comic Oasis. Whom I couldn't really recommend - I got no information whether or not it sent, until it arrived at my doorstop... with a busted box and a small dent in the actual packaging.

Preordered from Forbidden Planet. Had no clue about the first printing until it was on eBay for like a bajillion pounds.
£44.85 on forbiddenplanet.com and about £5 p&p.

It's a preorder, too. Amazon doesn't charge until it ships, right? So, for people on the fence, preorder, and as long as you remember to cancel, you can cancel anytime from now to July.

It's what I did. Pre-ordered on .com and .co.uk and cancelling the most expensive one by end June.

$60 for nearly 600 pages? Sounds well worth it. Wish I had the money to spare, might have to see if I can jiggle my budget around a bit.

Edit: Oh, release in July. Well I'm preordering then. :)

Looks like it's been delayed. I got an email from Amazon today.

We're writing about the order you placed on January 24, 2013. Unfortunately, the release date for the item(s) listed below has changed, and we need to provide you with a new delivery estimate based on the new release date:

Yoshitaka Amano, et al "The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy Slipcased Edition"
Estimated arrival date: August 12, 2013 - August 16, 2013

I have Dawn: The World of Final Fantasy (also Amano/Dark Horse). Anyone know how they compare? Is it worth it to buy Sky when I have Dawn???

Serious bump here, but I thought it might be useful to update a bit about the release date.

My Amazon order says release is now August 6th.

However my order from TFAW shipped today!

I think I foresee stock problems again. Thanks Dark Horse...

I guess I'm worried because last time I ordered this book
(the original one.. which I preordered many months in advance from 4 separate stores, and no I didn't get a single copy)
there was news of them being shipped out from other stores (namely TFAW), but my Amazon order got delayed later and later until it was finally cancelled.

I know it's not supposed to be limited this time around, but last time was such a monumental fuck up (and let's not forget Hyrule Historia LE) I don't really have much faith any more.

Ugh...maybe I should throw down some money for a Gamestop preorder just in case. Never knew that about the original release.

Well... I could just be being paranoid. But if I was someone thinking of throwing down another preorder for safety I'd do it at TFAW since they are the official distributor for Dark Horse and already have it in stock.

Heck I'm even thinking of ordering another one from there in case friends of mine miss out!

Welp, I hope they don't mess up again but these aren't limited so we aren't up for the same clusterfuck. I should cancel my second pre-order soon though lest I pay for it twice.

I don't what the hell is going on with this thing right now. According to tfaw it was released yesterday/today. Dark Horse's website says July 17th, and of course other book retailers say August 6th (amazon, BN, etc).

Now, the August 6th thing is with every book from comic book distributors the date is always like that because comic shops get the stuff first, though the online retailers usually get them a week and a half before the date they have listed (ie. something that Amazon has as August 6 would ship the last week of July at the latest)

But the fact TFAW is shipping these means it's out, and Amazon STILL says August 6th.

I really don't want to have to say "here we go again", but this is starting to get hairy.

Anyways, congrats on getting it so early. I really hope the rest of us can have such smooth trails.

This was not supposed to be a limited edition so that shouldn't happen (the cancelling, I mean). If they changed their mind however, that's a different story.

But I don't see why they would. This one isn't signed and it doesn't have the extras and can likely be a big seller for them if they keep it around for a while.

And as far as the previous edition, Amazon really wasn't responsible for that one. Dark Horse didn't indicate the number of copies until right at the time of release (1000), so Amazon pretty much took orders based on a estimate of what they were gonna get, probably. Now the Historia LE, Dark Horse said they were very specific about what they were giving to retailers, and Amazon/BN ended up overselling it.

I asked Dark Horse, they said the title isn't shipping until July 17th, are you sure they shipped it?

also, sorry for double post!

Yep I just had a shipment email! Too bad it'll take ages for international shipping.
Check the page at TFAW too, it's in stock there ready to order.

I tried pre-ordering anyway.
Even though i'm most likely late, you never know.

Also, fuck Amazon.uk doesn't have super saver delivery for outside the UK anymore, that's quite the game changer for me.

There shouldn't be a "late" for this. It's not a limited edition. It's not signed and doesn't have the two other books that came with the box. If there is a late for this, it means Dark Horse decided to limit the printing for some reason. I dunno, maybe they hate money? I mean, the FF fandom is big and by limiting this book they are just losing out on sales and making scalpers rich.

Yup, I see it. Really wonder what's going on here. Maybe someone at TFAW jumped the gun? This is really odd and has me concerned. I'm still butthurt about the original release.

I just sent an email to Amazon customer service, so maybe they'll shed some light... Either way i'll be dropping a preorder at my local Gamestop tomorrow, so worse to worse, I can just pick up the book myself.

In my experience they aren't helpful when it comes to this, they'll just tell you that the release date is August 6th.

Comic book distributor releases work kinda odd with Amazon and BN, since the distributors ship to comic book retailers first and the bookstore "release" date is two weeks later. But in most cases, Amazon and BN end up getting them shortly after the comic book shop date anyway. I don't think there's a way for them to know that ahead of time, though.

Example of what I mean: TLoU artbook says July 2nd release date on Amazon, but it's been in stock there since last week.

Also the preorders at Gamestop are online only, I don't think you can get them in-store.

I've decided that I can't trust their word any more, and it's clear they don't care much about losing out on sales. You'll remember from last time that they didn't tell anyone the original print was limited either, they just stopped shipping them out. It was only from people receiving their copies that even we found it was limited to 1000. Although they apparently did come out and say that this print wasn't limited, I still don't trust them.

You and me both :(
Someone could have jumped the gun, but you'd think they would have rectified it by now and changed the page to stop people being able to order it? As of now it's still up there ready to add to cart.

In my experience they aren't helpful when it comes to this, they'll just tell you that the release date is August 6th.

This is true. I remember even when it was pretty clear my original copy wasn't going to be shipping out, they'd still reply back and say that I'd definitely get my copy, but it had been delayed. They don't know anything.

Well the book is in GS's pre-order list in stores, so maybe its an exception, even though the site says otherwise?

I'll probably just take the advice of just ordering from TFAW just in case, and if the cheap one from Amazon actually ships...well i'll figure it out.

It's true that they didn't indicate the amount of copies, but they didn't stop shipping them just because... they stopped shipping because they didn't have any more signatures. Perhaps they didn't really know what Amano was willing to sign, and perhaps didn't even have the number themselves until most retailers oversold.

Like I said, I was incredibly frustrated by this, too. But after I heard about this reprint I felt a lot better. Pretty excited, too! Sure, we don't get the signature or the Amano book, but dammit this franchise has enchanted me since I was a youngin', and just having Amano's beautiful art is enough for me. But that excitement however has turned into concern now.

There is no reason for this to be limited and preorders to not get shipped unless Dark Horse just up and decided "nah, we'll cut the print run down anyway". So if stuff like that DOES end up happening, I'll be finished with them and their products for good and I'll let everyone I know whose interested in their products know about it too. However, I cannot fathom why they would want to create a scenario where people who got nothing on the last "premium" addition get nothing again on this edition. That would be like a kick to the nuts with a titanium plated boot, after getting punched in the gut.

(In Dark Horse's defense, they did very well with the regular Hyrule Historia. Despite the HUGE demand they managed to keep it in stock everywhere with very little trouble. I don't see why this should be any different, especially since while the demand seems very high, it's not at Historia's level.)

Regardless, I'm going to sit back and see how this plays out. I like DH, and their artbooks are always a treat, but the disappointment from missing out on this again is just... sorry, that will be the line, I just won't be able to support them anymore.

Too bad there's no news on Amazon's delay. I really didn't want to miss this again but Amazon's price is much more affordable for me right now and I was hoping to use some gift credit I had on it.

There's no "delay" yet, really. Just Amazon still having the old release date when it's now July 17th (or July 30th for bookstores as DH says), with one (expensive, and expensive shipping!) place seemingly sending some out early.

Yeh, the lack of communication made it pretty bad though. I mean, I had orders at four different retailers (including a couple of local ones who I know very closely, and who were able to ask Dark Horse directly for me) and right up until the cancel date, they swore black and blue that it was still coming out (this was straight from the publisher). There was no acknowledgement of it being limited to 1000 copies at all despite that information being readily available on the internet. Time ticked by and we still got no word; we could only guess that it was the signatures that caused the limitation, but I don't know if Dark Horse ever made a statement on it? If they did I was probably too pissed off to look for it by then.

I also wonder if they overproduced? Are there a bunch of the original print sitting in a warehouse somewhere just missing the signature card?

Even that is probably more than I'm expecting to get from them, ha!

Amazon actually had the date earlier to begin with. It was July 17 (or around there) but in April they send out a delay email pushing it back to August. Fishy...

Edit - Ahh looks like I misread that.

... that's actually pretty possible. They couldn't sell them like that without the signature, guess they would decide to go this route with them. A good idea, since I think this could be very successful for them (assuming they don't goof).

Well, the original release date for this set was June 19 (July 2nd for bookstores), at the end of April it got pushed to July 24th (Aug 6th for bookstores), so right now Amazon still has that last one. Nothing really odd happening there, Amazon is sometimes late to update their dates (ie. Project X Zone said August 25th up until the end of May when it was Jun 25th) as the official date on Dark Horse's site is now July 17 (going by the formula, this would mean July 30 is what Amazon should have).

Sold. The price was really the only thing holding me back from the first run, and I say this as an artbook junkie.. But three books full of Final Fantasy goodness for $60? Done and done.

My original set was preordered for $88. I'd easily trade than extra $28 to get that original set instead of this slipcase one :(

Not just cos of the scalping either, I think the extras would be worth that to me.

Pre-ordered from Amazon, largely due to the price and not usually having problems with shipping with them, though the stories about the last set were worrisome.

Amazon can be weird occasionally though. I've pre-ordered books from them only to have the item seemingly be available earlier than the listed release date, but I still end up waiting until the listed date before I get mine.

Would actually really like to see this come out earlier as I've recently become quite fascinated with Amano's work on the series.

After getting this one I'm actually way less pissed about my 4 preorders for the first print falling through. I can deal with missing a little signature card and flipbook and saving myself ~$500USD from scalpers. It would be cool if they put out the Amano book sometime though.

Delivery estimate remains unchanged on amazon.com I decided to cancel my .co.uk order last night to avoid ending up with 2 copies in the end. I sorta regret it now. Price difference was tiny all costs considered.
