Played a bit more of Survivor Squad and that game is ace. It has a few technical issues that caught me off guard. While its not a beta anymore, the game still has quite a few bugs and glitches. I hope the devs gets to iron those out sometime. That being said, none were game breaking at least.

SurvivorSquad_SS10.jpg
What-one-of-the-randomly-generated-maps-can-look-like.png

Gameplay:

The game has a few different modes (the others are the survival variant without any save I guess) and the main mode basically has you scouring randomized buildings with your squad to find additional people that you can save, kill zombies and find loot. Loot itself is needed to build bases in freed cities, craft weapons and healing items and to get better blueprints to build, which gives a great incentive to go out and play another level for a few good items.

Once you've chosen a location, you have 1-4 squad members with you that you can order individually or as teams which allows for some rather clever positioning that WILL be needed if you want to cover your flanks for incoming zombies. The beginning seems to be very challenging as you dont have the luxury of too many fire weapons, and even then, fire weapons attract unwanted attention, and a mob of zombies seems to be quite deadly in this game.

Slightly buggy, frantic, fun, tactical and exciting. One of the gems of the current month. There is a free demo on Desura which I urge you to try!

Man, Too Many Me is a really cool (and cheap at 2$) game as well:

Its a one button runner that deviates from the norm by not being an endless runner. Instead it has a set number of levels, each of which will take 1-5+ minutes to complete. Apparently it has 4 worlds with 25 levels each so it will take a while to finish every level.

What sets this game apart is the difficulty it provides via its main gameplay mechanic. In the level you can find certain portals that will give you another clone of yourself that you control in the same way you control your first character - with one and the same button. What initially doesnt sound all that interesting is accentuated by really smart clever design that puts those multiple clones to good use. Keeping all of them alive through the level seems impossible, so your duty is to find out where to sacrifice someone to grab a star (needed to unlock more levels) and where to keep them all alive. Maybe you can even split them up for 2 paths that need exploring while still having survivors when the paths join again. Balancing the timing of 7 characters simultaneously is not easy, but it doesnt feel unfair either. Grabbing all the possible stars in this game will take you a LOT of skill, and that needs to be executed with just one button. What is a bit sad atm is that the levels feel too samey, but hopefully the later worlds change up the artstyle a bit.

Definitely recommended for its low price of 2$ or whatever it is if you like Action Platforming puzzles.

Finally got to try Chess the Gathering.

1000051_579308268757682_853285186_n.png

Unfortunately, my play partner didnt like it, but not everyone can I guess. Anyone else interested in playing a few matches? In order to play it, you need an invite by someone (me?), so just let me know if you want the invite and send me your mail address via PM.

Gameplay:
It basically has the TCG turn based format and is actually rather easy to break down (for a full explanation on the rules, check here: http://ctg.misfitsattic.com/instructions:)
1. Get Mana & Draw a card
2. Move one piece on the board
3. Play a card
4. Dont let an enemy piece hit your kings

The first 2 steps are rather simple, but the 3rd step is where it gets a bit trickier. Playing a card can be either summoning a piece (basically queens, rooks or bishops) OR playing a spell card, which is either a wall (block), swamp (slow), ricochet (bounce once of walls) or wrap (move over the board borders).

And then you try to inch closer every round towards cornering your opponents and kicking a king, while trying to preventing your opponent from doing the same. Another interesting aspect is that this game isnt necessarily only for 2 players and the dev currently is thinking about how that diplomatic element works for the game:

So at first I thought table talk in CTG was fun, then I worried when mid-game alliances were made that it would be a bad thing. But last night there was lots of wheelin & dealin going on and I felt it added to the game, so long as everyone remained quite self interested. I played a game where I was weak and in the middle, yet became pivotal for both sides and tried to walk that line to survive. It was incredibly fun, but I could see it back-firing.

Anyone have thoughts on this? Does this 'human factor' add or detract from the game in your opinion and should I add in external forces to moderate it?

Might need to create a thread for it if there isnt much interest here, since there seem to be interesting matches to be had here.

Hey Hampster, Crayon Chronicles seems to be a bit simple indeed, but I havent played it myself yet. Would be cool to read some more in depth impressions if you have some. The recommended game looks nice btw.

And welcome :)

Well I'm only between 1 to 2 hours in and its my first true turned based roguelike so I can't say too much. My main complaint so far is that you rely on consumable items for your secondary skills but I really haven't found that many. So basically I'm doing the regular attack 95% of the time. I'm sure later in the game they drop more but its slow going in the first area. Plus the leveling system is pretty basic - just putting points into one of 5 (life, aim, luck, etc...) attributes. No graphic settings at all either, not even full screen (can only be played windowed)

That said I really love the aesthetic. To borrow an unoriginal phrase, the game just oozes charm.

Edit: Actually scratch some of that - I just had a great run on my 4th or 5th new life. I finally found a helmet, lots of cool items, I suppose that's just how roguelikes are. You have a few bad runs and then one finally hits and makes it all worth it.

Going into the home stretch of this months to play list.

Played The Last Door (Prolog), which was a very atmospheric adventure game with an intriguing story and rather easy puzzles.Very well done too, and I'll probably pay the price to see the other episodes of this story.

Back from PAX Aus and couldn't be happier with the reactions Cactus had, a couple hundred people played the game and many came back multiple times throughout each day! Considering how much stuff there was to play at PAX Aus I feel truly honoured that they wanted to do that.

Now this morning I wake up and see a lyrical article on Rock Paper Shotgun about Cactus, almost feels like we are a real game :) I guess I should get back to work and finish this thing so we can get it out there sooner than later.

Wow the idea looks amazing! Watched so much Changeman in my childhood.

I just submitted Love+ to Ouya as a free six level game, but I'm going to dump some more desura keys in hopes of turning it into Greenlight votes.

Voted for your game! I love these kind of platformers with difficult levels that makes you want to destoy your computer. :D

Super Splatters Surprisingly fun AND deep game. You need to pull off stunts in the levels while hitting some elements. Very satisfying and reminds me a bit of Peggle in that regard. Highscore leaderboards, fun gameplay, high focus on combos that require a good amount of skill to pull off and a cute artstyle. This one is a surprise, but one some of you really need to check out.

Super Splatters >>> Primordia >>>>>>>>>> Storm >>>>>Splatter
Super Splatters is so good. The redone campaign makes the mechanics way easier to grasp. Playing makes you feel like a scientist, an artist and a rock star.

Any recommendations for roguelikes that have:
- Sci fi theme (or least not fantasy)
- Gun-based combat and platforming
- are sidescrolling/2D

---
If anyone's interested in the Basement Collection, I can say Spewer and Time Fcuk are awesome. Especially Spewer, crazy concept and excellent puzzle platforming

Sword of the Stars: The Pit is a sci-fi themed roguelike, don't think it has platforming and it's perspective is top-down. It doesn't meet all your requirements but there is a demo you can try.

Toma, you got me interested in Survivor Squad. I'll try the demo when I get home, but:
- How many zombies on screen at once?
- Is it RTS, where you just control your squad's positions and they auto fire, or is it more of a dual stick shooter?

Yeah, that trailer sold me.
Exploration with cool vistas? Check
Physics/puzzle platforming? Check
Moving levels? Check
And made by a fellow GAFfer?

You got my vote on Greenlight, but unfortunately my Amazon Payment funds are limited so I can't purchase right now

Good luck. Hope you get good reviews and I'll keep your game in mind when I get more $$

Also, any chance of a demo?

Edit: My laptop has Intel HD Graphics 2000. Can that run the game? What does "SM3-compatible" mean? All my other specs meet or surpass the requirements

The most zombies I saw so far at once was 10, but that was only the second level. It is an RTS where you mostly control the squads position. It also feels a bit like turn based strategy if you use the space "pause" bar often, since that allows you to give orders when the game is paused which will be carried out afterwards.

Its a little bit mean to laugh, but... it was still funny to see that in big red letters:
DERP. We screwed up and there's a crash bug.
We're on it and you'll be able to download the game again VERY SOON.
Sorry about that!

Good luck fixing it ;)

And the final two initial play impressions from me this month:

Will Love tear us apart has a really cool art style, but wtf am I supposed to do? It just seems completely random and there is no way to read a reaction since he changes his reaction only after I chose a new card. I just flipped cards with him for about 10 minutes, frequently getting the "This is getting nowhere"-response and being rather annoyed.
Trap them on the other hand is a really smart puzzle game and you SHOULD try the demo if you like challenging puzzle games. Its not just the tried and true Dig Dug formula, but rather focusses a lot on the falling stones and how you can manipulate enemies by changing the level layout. Really fun game, but veeeeeeery hard. It requires a lot of thinking AND swift movement. But still, didnt expect it to be this good.

And regarding Survivor Squad:

Howdy Marco,

I am currently working on a update for the game that will add a Multiplayer mode and fix as many issues as I can find. It will be out in about 2 weeks.
Thank you for those bug reports, I'll see if I can replicate them.

Cheers
Hugo

I just reproduced the bugs and send the full bug reports to him, so he should be able to fix the bugs I found. PLUS, MP mode :-o That could be really neat.

Edit: Random aside, it sort of plays similar to Doorkickers but much, much more fun. To me anyway. Might be the survival aspect.

I'm interested, but in the same time I know I will end up getting destroyed just like with clairvoyance. :-(

Weak players might have a slight advantage in this game actually if we play with more than 2 players since the stronger players will probably rather try to ally with you since a weaker player might not seem an immediate threat in the beginning of the game, where fighting the more powerful enemy might be the higher priority.

If you feel brave enough just write me a PM with your email address for the invite :)

I posted this a while back before the Indie Games thread, so I figured I'd drop it in here to see what you all think:

DESPERATE GODS

Download for free (PC/MAC): http://www.wolfire.com/desperate-gods
Developer Overview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=8WD0gMu0LDU

in4bFxGYCZEW0.jpg

Why you should play DG:

1) It's a board game with monsters and shit.
2) It has a great physics system. It's fun to do shit.
3) There's no CPU to enforce any rules. You play this how you would any board game at home.
4) You can play this offline or online.
5) It's free and open source.

I assume this has already been posted but:
King Arthur's Gold is on sale at indiegamestand for pay what you want with $1 as lowest.

It is TF2+Terraria and great fun. Just check the game here with the free version.

Just noticed your post, it has a Single Player defend against zombies mode. But it is based on multiplayer.

Oh, I cant remember reading about that when it launched. Need to check that mode when I got around to buying it.

Just found this game on Desura:

Love Sniper

screenshot0005.png

Love Sniper is a free comedy BxG Visual Novel which is developed by B Dash Suisen and translated/localized by roseVeRte. The main character, Heiji, is a boy who tried to confess his love using a love letter. Too bad, the girl Ageha doesn't seem to be happy even after she got it. Heiji became upset, and suddenly a cupid named Picchu came to him and offered him help to make his love come true. What will happen to Heiji's love then?

The game is free and from what I've read short, if you like Visual Novels why not give it a try.

I felt that the main intention of the game is to frustrate at times, in line with the themes it revolves around - the relationship crisis in this case. In the first section you have to match the three cards with your partner's attitude expressed on his/her face. Winning an argument makes you stronger, which is shown with your partner getting thinner, to the point of vanishing, and the opposite when losing. Basically, it's a simple match game - the Minotaur/anger card wins with happiness, two dancing figures/happiness card with indifference and so on, so, as you see, it's strictly rules based. Actually, I think it would be much more interesting, if the game was less strict and more random, to confuse even more.

The second part might be even more frustrating, if you try to ''win'' it with both sides:D

Really enjoyed it, but the game tapped out it's fun half way through for me. Nothing new just more and more of the same. After the midway point it became pointless to even try a multi heart stage. Standing still and endlessly killing the unlimited amount of zombies was not fun. Hell I once left the game running for 4 hours since a stage glitched out a heart and moved it to a spot I can't touch. Just an endless stream of zombies and their fucking spawn rate didn't decrease so it was a constant firefight.

The last mission is also completely horseshit.

But yeah enjoyed the game and don't regret buying it. But won't touch it again ... unless they update it with some meaningful content.

Well he is updating it with MP (no clue what exactly though), so we'll see what that adds. Sad to hear that the game doesnt hold up on the later stages though. What you are saying is basically that the endgame is too weak because there isnt anything to play for anymore and no new enemy types/difficulties being introduced? Did you try out the other gameplay modes?

Didnt play it that far yet tbh, so I might wait with my purchase until he added the MP and ironed out the bugs I encountered.

Have not tried MP, but can't imagine it adds that much (for me ofcourse).
Didn't really get into the rest as the score one was basically story-less campaign and highlights the issues with the spawn system even more.

The deathlab was fun, but felt that no matter how well you manage your team, once you get the endless spawns it's kinda over.

In the campaign I ended up quick-saving before every missions as any multi-heart stage became pointless, even with a maxed out crew with turrets and etc.

Had to turn off the volume once the endless spawn came. Sounded like a glitched sound effect :p

Maybe I just ran into a buggy build? I mean the endless spawns was game breaking and the only way I could move forward was to reload and hope it's not a heart stage.

(Then again the same issue is found in Warframe when you play solo ... really do hate the cheap mechanic of just doing an overwhelming endless spawn to make a game tougher)

That would be neat, thanks!

Ok, the game gives you three units, a builder, a knight and an archer which are the whole set; a small tower, and some chests to loot. You have to build your defenses fast because when the night falls the zombies starts attacking. You control the builder directly and others by giving simple orders like go or follow. When the builder dies you switch units. When all dies it ends.

Hmm, makes it seem like there is indeed some fundamental issues with the balancing/gameplay progress later on. Maybe I can forward that as feedback or something if I feel similarly since I was in contact with the dev anyway.

Yeah I guess I should actually give feedback to him. Although mentally I just waved it off as I didn't regret my purchase. I still had fun for most of it and it was pretty decently priced.

I need to mention that this might have been a beat build. It's been awhile since I played it (in fact someone posted about the game in one of the indie threads you created) and not completely sure if the build I played was final.
