Tomorrow there will be only 3'5GB available for developers. And the day after tomorrow, only 2GB

I don't know, but looking at this, I would prefer the first version (4GB with 512MB for the OS) than the final version with 8GB and only 4'5 available.
It would have been the same and it would have been cheaper.

I don't want the share stuff, the facebook apps, the party chat...

IT BEGINS

Went from 5.5 to 4.5 in one day. By Monday the PS4 is going to be the same as the PS3 with 512 and 7.5 reserved for Playstation Home!

I think it is more that people who do software development are all wondering how .. of what he has showed.. could that possibly use 5 gigs when games like last of us and gears of war used less than 512.

It comes off more and more as just a dig at ms to be honest

It's over, period. Sony lost their last ace, and that's the end of their PS4 hopes and dreams.

It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for PS4. Sony has nothing left, nothing they can reveal tomorrow would fix the hole now created. There is no reason left for any one, hardcore or casual, to substantively invest in a PS4. Except if they want to play Killzone. Which will also come to Xbox One at some point.

The age of Sony is done.

The information with 4.5 GB + 512MB was from a beyond3D member, and he forwarded this to Eurogamer:

It's at least 5GB, the same amount as the Xbox. Which is completely fine, because 99% of all games in the first two years won't need more RAM.

Don't you think it's peculiar that there's a split? Either they have 5 or they have 4.5. And there's just a whole lot of rationalization going on. It's fine because there's nothing better, not because now all of a sudden devs wouldnt know what to do with it.

Holy shit I just realized RAM is the new "how many polygons is it pushing?"

Which was the new "bits"

Was honestly expecting it to be "teraflops" this gen, but it seems I was tricked.

The BIT wars have ended my friend, the RAM wars have only just begun. War has changed.

I remember when everyone was thinking next-gen consoles would have 2 GB of RAM, and maybe 4 GB if we were lucky.

You're only about 12 hours late on this one.

the other guy even combined the FF one with Amir0x's.

So essentially Sony doubled the RAM from 4 to 8 gb to up what was available from 3.5 to 4.5gb ? Seems expensive for little gain...

Oh yay, a new thread. Wait, the new source is a guy from B3D based on above post?

And could someone elaborate on what exactly they are on about with there being some sort of limited virtual memory that was being counted?

So are they saying that OS reserves are 3GB of physical RAM, game OS has 4.5GB of physical RAM, with potential to access 512MB of additional physical RAM?

It still boggles the mind that Sony would be adding $45 in BoM per unit to increase the game RAM by 1GB and essentially use the rest for increasing OS reserves.
Well for one we never had any idea with the layout was prior to this to the 8GB upgrade. It's probably a lot better.

Secondly, yeah the B3D rumor is 4.5 guaranteed, 512 physical flexram+ 512 virtual(or 1024 according to his wording). If that rumor is the source, the the op article is wrong slightly.

That's it: Preordering 5 PS4s and setting them all on fire.

Seriously, do we have to go thru this shit again? The "source" of that rumor is some B3D guy; devs are more than happy with the PS4's capabilities; the console is still a good deal more powerful than its competitor for a lower cost; and this idea that "this number is slightly lower than I hoped even though I don't know what it means" is just dumb.

I'm on my phone, but id search the responses to my posts last years when I was literally called crazy for thinking these new consoles might have 2GB with 2 for the OS.

By the same you mean 1GB different...which is significant given The Last Of Us fit in half of that.

You can absolutely not be serious. Did it ever occur in your small console mind that RAM is not the primary defining factor in determining power? Has playing at 480p all these years atrophied your mind to the point that you're willing to accept anything your fellow N console zealots spew about RAM being the one and only spec in the world you should care about? Your type is seriously damaging the level of discourse on here when anything technically minded comes up and it would behoove you to go read up on the basics of console hardware and maybe then you would begin to understand that this 'weaker' PS4 absolutely destroys the tincan RAM in your overpriced box of choice.

Nu-uh, gamers are entitled to having all the RAM. Developers being happy with what they get so far is irrelevant.

The WiiU OS RAM is 1GB. Is that what you want for the PS4?

I don't.

I don't think the 1GB of RAM is the problem there. It's Nintendo's incompetence in building a well written/programmed OS. Christ! Windows 7 runs on less than 1 gig.

If you can't design a console os with a small(ish) memory print then you shouldn't be the one making it.

4.5 GB of GDDR5 has officially been birthed as a meme. I see bullet points and list wars using it as the new "8.5 for Uncharted 3".

So the source of the article is a guy from B3D, the same guy that thought Xbone is going to get upgraded to 12GB and or have the GPU upclocked I believe.

I think it was originally 7GB then Sony saw MS's OS features and decided to play it safe and reserve a large amount in case they need it. I doubt they will be using over 3GB for their OS. They will give some back to developers over time.

It's better to take some now than later since no launch game, or games a year from now, will be using anywhere near 7GB anyway. When the time comes when developers need extra RAM they will get it.

7GB was never confirmed.

How much memory required for 15 minutes 1080p footage? This must 1 reason so much memory is reserved...

Almost all of it ofcourse.

WTF? Is this real?
Someone linked the initial post by the B3D member earlier in the thread.

This is the follow up post where he claims the update is due to his informing Leadbetter.

I thought common consensus was that there was something of a stroke of "luck" in the RAM densities becoming available that allowed them to go with 8GB, and had it not the PS4 would be using 4GB GDDR5.

It's conceivable that RAM OS allocation prior to the upgrade was larger than hypothesized I suppose.

It's also reasonable to expect that more RAM will be freed up later I suppose. If there are no plans to free up more, then that's frankly a colossal waste of money imo. I'm not sure where this idea that OS features will sell these systems comes from... I just don't see it. Buying a $400-500 box to snap things really doesn't seem like something consumers will do.

10/10

To be fair, at least the "XB1 uses 3gb for it's OS hurr durr" argument is over, because it was stupid to begin with. There were a lot valid criticisms of the XB1 before they reversed all their policies, their use of RAM wasn't really one of them.

Technically, both consoles seem to be very similar in my opinion, but I admit I am pretty much clueless when it comes to technical details.
