Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Streets of Rage 2 and 3 are co-op mainstays

I've got SoR 1 on the Sega CD and 2 on cart :D

Gunstar Heroes, Toejam & Earl 2

Toe Jam & Earl (the first game), World of Illusion (although quite easy), and the Golden Axe series are also good for co-op.

Thanks guys! I just picked up Golden Axe as well since the version that comes on the CD version lacks co op for whatever reason.

So I know that Toejam & Earl 2 is WAY cheaper than 1 but which makes for the better multiplayer game? Oh and I also just ordered Mega Bomberman!

Only bad thing about T&E 2 is platforming sometimes gets fucked up, it gets better once both players become better at jumping. The jumping in the game is like you're on the moon, takes getting used to. It's also hilarious.

Completely different game styles. The first one is kind of top down perspective with focus on exploration. The second is a typical platformer. The first is considered a great game, the second not so much.

Hmmm definitely not my cup of tea but something my girl would probably love. I tend to prefer twitchy action stuff but she grew up with a snes and loves slow paced exploration based games that make me pull my hair out haha. I'll keep an eye out for a cheap copy if I can find one.

Yeah, TJ&E is kinda slow paced. The great thing about it is that each level is completely random generated, so no two game sessions are equal.

I LOVED ToeJam & Earl 2. Played through that co-op with my mom actually.

Another good multiplayer game is Tiny Toons: Acme All-stars. Really well done and a lot of fun.

i gotta sit down & spend some real time with TJ&E2, finally got it back a few months ago on a craigslist swap (dude wanted my doubles of SMW & SF2 turbo for TJE 2, Robocop vs Terminator and a few others, i was pretty happy). like zelda/mario 2 i wrote it off on a rental cause i adored 1 so much (still play it co-op sometimes!) and it's so very different, but ive seen 16-bit gems and others online make a case for it, so it might've been my loss. i mean, i was such a fan of these guys id play their menacer game, and that was kinda terrible.

Game gets a lot of hate, but I enjoyed it. I even prefer the Genesis version's music over Richard Jaques tunes made for the Saturn version.

Not with those atrocious load times.

Same. I listen to the Genny OST every once in a while.

Also, unlike the Saturn version, the Genny version looked dang good for the platform.

Maybe I just need to check out the Genesis soundtrack again, because the Saturn bonus stage + soundtrack were enough to win me over.

it ain't real hardware but at least you can grab a fantastic port of the Japanese version on XBLA/PSN for cheap

Not an option for me. Those ports just don't work for me.....believe me, I tried. Bought loads of them on Virtual Console, and I also have the Genesis Collection on 360. But no....I need the real cart, in its real box.

Seems like the usual price online is about 30 bucks? Not too bad considering the prices Final Fight games usually go for.

Are you talking about "Bare Knuckle 3"?
Where in the world could I obtain it for 30 bucks?!? I would buy that in a heartbeat, even if shipping to Germany would add another 10 to 15 dollars.

I even went so far to ask people going to Japan to get that game for me, but obviously it didn't work out. :(

Went to my local game store today and traded in some stuff i was done with and they gave me $32 in store credit. Got them to give me Contra III for SNES which they had marked $34.99, and they more or less threw in Mystic Defender for the Genesis for nothing. Really awesome guys in there. Level 7 games for folks in Denver.

They also had a copy of Mega Turrican that has apparently gone up quite a bit since I last checked. I think it was marked $25, so ill eventually pick it up.

That's a pretty nice little freebie. I like that one.

I'm sorta hearing conflicting reports about Armor All and console plastic, but maybe they arent talking about the wipes?

Some people say it does damage to the plastic in the long run? Havent used the wipes yet, but dunno if its going to lead to something strange later.

EDIT: Hmm...so far so good. N64 and Genesis look great. N64 more so than my Genesis since that had a few scratches/scuffs on the plastic to begin with.

Well, I finally found my "Bare Knuckle 3"! (I hope)

I asked around with those Amazon merchants again and all had loose carts except for one; his copy is supposed to be CIB. It's 45$ instead of 35, but hell, that's a LOT better than those 70-80$ eBay BiNs.

So thanks guys! (for making me check those sellers again). Now I just have to hope that the game REALLY comes with box and manual....

I like TJ&E3, not a bad game, can keep The legacy of the first. I hated the demo although, but later (much later) when I got the game I completed it 100%.

Speaking of TJ&E I actually came across a CIB copy yesterday for $20 locally. I'm not really sure if it's worth that or not though. I never really did like it all that much as a kid, BUT I think it's something me and my girlfriend could play together.

Goes for like twice that, easily. Buy.

If you end up not liking it, you can flip it quickly.

Yeah, just to be sure it's TJE1 you're referring to, right? That's the one I was talking about.

For sure. I remember playing at a friends house back when it was brand new. We were in his older brothers room watching while he was listening to doggystyle, which had also come out. I remember not liking it, but for some reason I put up the big tj&e poster up on my wall that came in the amazing Spider-Man game. So long ago, lol.

This came in the mail today. Mostly taking a break from buying old games, but I had some eBay bucks, so I bought this. I have some good memories of playing this as a kid over at my cousin's place across the country.

Best version of Aladdin!
I was stuck in the first level for quite awhile because my TV was wayyyy to dark! (and i think i already said this somewhere in the thread)

Got the PAL version of Captain America and The Avengers:

And Mega Games 6 vol. 1, Taz in Escape from Mars and Virtua Racing:

Third fun fact: If you walk off a platform, hold jump, and land on something that launches you upward, you go significantly higher. Some Apu tokens can only be gotten in this fashion, but nothing tells you about it AFAIK.

I learned this playing the game.. especially on the Genie stage!

Now thats nice. Was the Lost Vikings series actually any good? I know Blizzard and all, but still.

Oh and I ended up snagging High Seas Havoc today myself. Box but no manual = 10 bucks was pretty nice.
