Indie Games [July] Now Voting - Post 874!

Overgrowth is coming along nicely
Only on Alpha 200...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1G1swqs0DU

I'd love to preorder and play the beta, but 29.95 is way too steep. I guess they're going the Prison Architect route

And how do I embed Youtube videos into a post?

Good to see that making progress, 200 already....I think I brought that about a year ago now and I can list all the meaningful updates on one hand. Not really complaining though, it is cool to see a game being developed with virtually zero time or money concerns, the attention to detail Wolfire is going into it is crazy.

Another great looking game artistically, Aaru's Awakening.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W4QMx4pOEM

Lumenox: Aaru's Awakening is a hand drawn 2D action platformer. You are the champion of Dawn, Aaru. As you complete missions and explore the world of Lumenox, you must make the most of Aaru's highly mobile skills, teleportation and charging.

Anyone got impressions of this? It's tempting but I dunno unless it is super good. If I wanted a strat game I would probably get Skulls of the Shogun at this point.

From the June thread:

As per requested by our Indie Monarch, Toma.

Expeditions: Conquistador - 20USD

A debut SRPG of sorts from Danish outfit Logic Artists set within the heyday of the Spanish conquistadors, featuring tactical roleplaying game with a touch of strategic resource management and a pinch of choose-your-own-adventure. Conquistador is set in a rarely visited part of history which is rife with mystery, political intrigue, and good old-fashioned violence.

In short, it has been described as Pirates meets Jagged Alliance. Thumbs up.

GAF OT here for further info.

Lovely looking game, seems pretty hard though.

Apropos hand-drawn games you should try Shrug Song. It's a mini adventure game, part of a bigger project called Shrug Worlds, which is a collaboration between 2D artist Alina Constantin and Nifflas (Knytt Stories).

New thread rule. Games can be featured twice in the OP. First time on them making their first public appearance (either in the Alpha or Demo state) and the second time on their actual release.

I wanted to shout from the rooftops about my collaboration with Lazy Brain Games, and this seemed like the place to do it. I made all the audio for Time Squid, which is a free for PC. Version 1.2 was just released and added controller support, plus it cleaned up a few bugs. I hoped Indie-GAF would check it out and provide some feedback.

Here's a gameplay vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO-llpQ6q0M

Get the game here: http://www.lazybraingames.com/time-squid/

Got lost in the thread, but this looks super fun :) Will check it out next month for sure and include it in the OP.

My Vote, just have to go with what I played and remembered I played.

Rooks Keep - Source code was recently released, so it now has full mod support. It has pretty graphics, especially the environments, interesting fighting mechanics and lots of customization options for an Arena/Chess hybrid game. The downside is, it just doesn't have to player-base to fully take advantage of the mod/multiplayer aspect of the game.

Futuridium EP - 2 hours passed real quick with this one, it's hard (even on easy which is just wrong). Trippy music and graphics is one way to describe it.

Gods Will Be Watching- Disturbing, somewhat addictive (the can't stop until you succeed type), but I failed so many times that I had to give up lol, mostly due to bad luck on the rng.

Fleish & Cherry in "Crazy Hotel" - Feels like your playing an actual black and white cartoon. Demo was also extremely well done for a demo.

I cant praise this game enough. It's like my Reus. So happy there'll be new game +, very interested to see how many stretch goals they can reach

Reus isnt even my favourite game from this space this year, but it seems a bit weird to compare a browser game survival short story to a fully fletched release with estimated 50-60 hours of content until completion since I'd play Reus or GWBW for completely different reasons and in different moods.

I still get what you were saying though, just seemed a bit of a weird comparison :p Really looking forward to the "remake" too, that one could be a really remarkably special game.

Also let it be known that August is month of the Free.

21 out of 26 so far either completely free of free demos.

So 5 hours into Warband...yeah it's definitely my favorite game in my library. And yet, it feels like I've barely scratched the surface

Maybe it's because I've been taken prisoner like 6 times...keep losing my entourage

In the options, says X to toggle weapon mode. What does that mean? I've tried it with swords and daggers and axes and nothing happens.

Oh, so far nothing is more satisfying than doing a custom battle of 100 on 100. So fun. In Siege, how do I open the castle gate?

Has anyone tried the Floris mod? I see there are three types: basic, general, and expanded. On ModDB, it says that the mod is very performance intensive. I don't want basic; all the good stuff is in general and expanded. To those who remember my specs, could I run the general or expanded Floris mod? I can already run Warband on high.

I really need to try that again. The first and only time trying to play this game I was stuck in a neverending bug in the tutorial which wouldnt let me progress.

Try the Floris mod or try Warband? Warband is so good. It's no Crysis graphics wise, but the visuals are good enough, the combat is fun, the RPG elements are deep, and the large scale battles are just utter chaos. And there's multiplayer.

Reminder again about the Groupees bundle containing Reef Shot which will be in the next thread:

http://groupees.com/arpg
Just played it for a bit and I actually liked the beginning, although it seemed a bit simple. My biggest complaint so far was that there is no photo album, which is... wtf. Other than that, its rather satisfying to get good shots and to explore the surroundings.

To be honest, none of these titles really look that appealing to me other than say, maybe Dead Pixels.

Sorry, I will pass on this one. :/

PEOPLE, I BRING INDIE GAME NEWS !

Brazilian indie game studios made a mini gamejam this weekend and they made prototypes based on the theme of horror games.

It was called Pack of Horrors

dbvQJsr.gif

Studios included are Miniboss (Out There Somewhere and Towerfall's art), Alpaca Team (Android's Luke at the Stars), Joymasher (Oniken and Odallus) and other stuff like teams made of the brazilians that work on Bossa (Surgeon Simulator 2013) and teams that include dudes like the dude who worked on the pixel art of Rogue Legacy.

They have till friday to polish the games.

I shall keep you guys informed, since probably most of those games will be free =3

I've got Dead Pixels but have only played a bit of it. Seemed like a standard sidescroller. I have LaserCat on the Xbox 360 and really enjoyed it. Reminded me of a game you'd see on an Atari system but with much better controls. I'm pretty sure a GAF member made Orbitron.

I have been invited to the Beta of Guncraft on Steam this morning, reading the T+C's that is all I can say it would seem

I have the full game, so will be interesting to see what differences there are

Hey, my voting! Sorry if I've been away, am on a holiday here in Pakistan where power cuts and mediocre internet are the name of the game. So not as many gifs this time :p

Primordia

If you've played a Wadjet Eye game, you know what to expect. Classic point-and-click adventure aesthetic down to the resolution, Logan Cunningham, occassionally funny dialogue, and a well-realized world where Man is God and the children are robots. The art reminds me of classic sci-fi novel covers, very Dune-y.

Knights of Pen & Paper

Great game, perfect for the phone. I never played D&D but this is a super cute RPG with a great look to it. I get to have a hipster mage in my party! Likely will be playing this for a while.

Odallus: The Dark Call
ODALLUS-01.png

Never played the old Castlevania games, but that 8-bit colour aesthetic is awesome. Played the demo, have now got the double jump boots and can now breathe underwater. Stiff precise controls might be part of the charm, but I always had trouble climbing up ledges. I hope you'll be able to save the game in the final version. Still, highly recommended.

Soundodger

From the guy who made emotional art games, here comes a music rhythm bullet hell shooter! However, the pleasant minimalist presentation is still here. And it can get quite addictive.

Magrunner
irwPyinLvFrhB.gif

I've sung the praises of this game enough, but yeah great first person puzzler with an evolving world that builds up to the supernatural Lovecraftian stuff rather than blow its wad early like most games.

Gods Will Be Watching
tumblr_mm28gshU5o1rt6u7do3_r1_400.gif

Very cool survival management game with that distinctive tall 2D model aesthetic (Sword and Sworcery, Riot). Someone here compared it to being as good as Papers, Please and I can see that with the moral dilemma, but just from this single-screen alpha it comes off more as a trial-and-error puzzler. Watching the trailer though, I see it's going with much more scenarios and could be pretty special. I hope the level of voice acting in the teaser trailer is not indicative of the game, 'cause then I hope they don't make their voice acting stretch goal :p

Cloudface
cloudface-animation-pc-platform-game.gif

While right now in alpha stage it's just a barebones platformer, I can't help but smile as I navigate a cloudfaced businessman past rolling cat bombs set to the best game song of the year.

Tried to play some games to give some feedback for those still on the fence with the bundle:

Dead Pixels
Dead-Pixels-2.jpg
Decent side scrolling survival action game. You walk right, kill zombies, pick up weapons, sell stuff, upgrade yourself, buy ammo and kill more enemies. I dont think its bad, but its not necessarily all that great either. The survival aspect works pretty well since you get a feeling of running out of stuff constantly and the enemies quickly become a threat, but I dont see much reason to replay it since the gameplay is rather same they second time around and the slow movement doesnt really make up for that either. Not sure I'll replay it, but it seems to have several modes and rankings, so it seems like a decent purchase, although nothing world changing. Its a game with local coop though, so kudos for that.

This game however seems pretty cool. Its a platformer in which you unlock characters, skills for those characters and world styles and you need to switch them around in a level to solve them. Seeing the levels instantly switch the art style and with it, the corresponding level features is a pretty cool idea. For example the first world takes up less from your extra gauge when using special attacks, while the second style lets you drop slower. You can also switch around between the unlocked characters to get their different special abilities or equip them with different elemental attacks. Only played the first 2 levels, but the systems seem pretty solid and deep enough to voice a recommendation.

Interesting concept hidden away in a pretty bland action platformer. Right clicking allows you to change gravity which lets you zip up and walk along the ceiling or reach higher ledges pretty easily. However, the rest of the game seems just not engaging enough to make me want to play it. The animations are awkward, the level design is very, VERY simple, the enemies are not all that exciting and cover the obvious basic standard archetypes (first enemy walking slowly, second enemy jumping a bit, etc).

Very charming open sidescrolling action platformer with frequent check points and riddles! The art style looks a bit simple, but it really comes together nicely ingame. The beginning didnt seem to be too hard, but the level design already hinted at some challenging room designs later on. I really like the way they approached the level design here, meaning that almost every room can be considered a puzzle or platforming challenge, after which you can save, allowing for carefree experimentation. Reminds me a bit of 1000 Amps in that regard. Someone else seemed to like it as well, so this doesnt seem to be a bad pick.

Smooth Operator: Call Center Chaos
smooth_operators_call_center_chaos_20032013_3.jpg
Very addicting simulation game. Its not terribly deep, but has enough going on to be definitely worth playing through once. I read it doesnt offer much once you managed to build up your callcenter juggernaut, but until then its definitely a welcome activity. You build and upgrade the facilities, manage the schedule of your workers to decrease the amount of people using the recreational facilities and elevators at the same time, manage their work efficiency, happiness and everything else that needs doing (repairing PCs, building repairs). Surprisingly fun game. Just lost a bit over an hour to this game without noticing. Definitely a good game in the bundle that is worth playing if you like Game Dev Story like simulation games and it simply doesnt get old watching small pixelated minions working for you.

Will check out the other games later, but seriously, 4€ is a great price for this bundle and it would be worth it for just the 5 games above alone. Lasercat, Chester and Smooth Operators are all fun games. And its your chance to grab some games for the next thread for really cheap :p

The other 5:

48 Chambers
screen3.jpg

Seems to be a rather standard "Escape-this-room-alive" action puzzle game. You move the main icon around, avoiding obstacles, while collecting more time to reach your goal. Its certainly not a "bad" game considering the genre its set in and what the game does, it does pretty well, but there isnt all too much exciting that this game offers. Still decent for a little diversion I guess.

Little Racers STREET
1_1.jpg

Top down racing game that has surprisingly much going on. Weather effects changing the road grip, challenges for extra money and cars, MP, unlockable and purchaseable cars for your own car park, car upgrades, several different tracks in the same city and car paint. The overall game structure reminds me a bit of Gran Turismo in that regard. I also think the cars control pretty well and the different difficulty settings allow for a good risk/reward payoff since a higher difficulty will yield more credits. It seems a bit slow in the beginning, but considering you only have the slowest cars first, this could get rather frantic and fast pretty quickly. Doesnt seem to be a bad purchase if you fancy top down racers.

I cant comment on EvilQuest because it doesnt seem like anything that you can judge without playing it for a while. Its an action RPG with the hook that you are playing the bad guy, which is admittedly a bit cool, but I somehow cant bring myself to care for it.

And I somehow dont get Orbitron. Is it a highscore game? Just flying in one direction, killing things, and back into the other direction. I cant seem to find any sort of progress/upgrades etc, but it certainly looks pretty. I might just be misunderstanding how this game is meant to be played.

And apparently no impressions for SpyLeaks, since the game just shows me a blank and white window. Great. Anyone else who can play it?

But still, overall I'd say it was definitely worth the price for Lasercat (3/5), Smooth Operators(4/5), Chester (5/5) and Little Racers (4/5), with my initial impression ratings behind the titles.

From that bundle the only game that I own is Chester, after reading your opinions Toma, I should play it
after finishing the games I'm currently playing. :D

Yeah, Chester and Smooth Operators are my personal highlights from the bundle, but the bundle offers a pretty nice variety overall if someone doesnt own any of the games.

You'll get an incentive to play it next month :p

Tried the game from the other bundle and while they all look pretty great, I didnt really like the gameplay of any of them (except Arthurs Gold).

The Few is a strategy-lite game where you build bases and recruit pilots to shot down other planes attacking britain in top down "draw-the-path" style.

Nightmare of the Deep is a hidden object game, which i am never really fond of.

Oddplanet seems to be a Limbo style platformer with horribly clunky controls and rather uninspired puzzles.

Cinders art style is amazing but its basically just an interactive story, where I spent 20 minutes without any of the choices making a meaningful difference. The game said its focus lies on choices, so I am sure there will be more later, but it didnt grab me immediately.

Well this is unexpected. During the Summer Sale, there were two games that I wasn't sure I could run or at least run well: Puddle and Rochard. I expected Puddle to run well and for Rochard to be the game to have lag/framerate issues

Yet it's the total opposite. Puddle just runs horribly on my laptop, but Rochard is nice and smoothy and lag free. At least Puddle is coming to IOS this week so I'll be able to play in some fashion

And Rochard is really good

Late to voting this month, as my backlog sung to me (The walking dead, Sleeping Dogs, Telegltich <3 <3 <3 <3 <3), and I didn't play a ton of games

1. Cloud face: Something infectious about it, and floating, and exploding does cats.
2. Penny arcade Episode 4: Great writing, and Zeboyd's "Puzzle Battles" still stand up, though I find they drag a bit by the end of most of thse
3. Gods will be watching: Just smart design, make your own story, full of tension
4. Sound Dodger, just an overall good time :)

Oh, wait...Breaking Bad?

Europa Universalis IV is going to swallow me whole and I dont think I'll touch many other games after its release for a while. Just preordered it.

Saw the thread talking about Wings of Saint Nazaire played it for a bit and I can say the game is great. It's currently in the Alpha state, being developed on Unity 3D by a team of 3!

Thanks for crossposting! Much appreciated. Will include it in next months thread. Please feel free to crosspost any other GAF thread that pops up.

Europa Universalis IV is going to swallow me whole and I dont think I'll touch many other games after its release for a while. Just preordered it.

The final pre-order bonus for Europa Universalis IV has been revealed, and it’s a doozy: if you purchase Europa Universalis IV before its release, you get a free full copy of Crusader Kings II. What’s more, you also get an exclusive converter program that lets you take your beloved CKII kingdom, and import it into your EUIV game!

Also this:
What happened to summer? We sat down to play what we thought would be just a couple of hours of Europa Universalis IV, and when we looked up again, it was August. Did we accidentally put time travel in the game? We knew it was addictive, but… no, this has got to be a time travel bug. We’ll have to talk to the dev team about this! We can’t afford to lose so much time, not with so much else going on at Paradox!
