Media Create Sales: Week 30, 2013 (Jul 22 - Jul 28)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the worst selling game in the series? Didn't BiS sell double the amount of Dream Team?
Sales aren't terrible, but it seems like a bit of a let down.

First week (Garaph):
Superstar Saga : 63,839
Partners in Time : 133,229
Bowser's Inside Story : 220,055

It has Bomba all over it. I'm going for 70k - 90k, if that. Unless NCL get off their arse and make people well aware of it for the next couple of weeks...

That sounds awfully optimistic to me.

It's all highly dependent on other Sony products right now, so I think the key long term is Sony making sure 3rd parties do the same thing with their inevitable PS4 titles.

You mean release cross games like devs are doing with Vita/PS3? But PS4 is a magnitude more powerful than what PS3 is so devs would either need to gimp the Vita game or PS4 game just to port it over as smooth as possible

I don't think PS4 titles will be as easy as PS3 titles to port to the Vita. But that won't really be an issue in Japan.

I think Lego's performance is actually probably the best argument I've seen for the Wii U potentially having some sort of recovery as it's the first real sign of life the system's seen. Game came out of nowhere and did much much better than expected.

LOL @ Dragon's Crown ruining everyone's predictions.

It got a CoD and an Assassin's Creed and didn't really go anywhere with them. GTA won't make it relevant.

I haven't played those, but I heard they were both pretty bad, especially compared to their homeconsole siblings.
I think good games and a pricecut could really do something for the Vita.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

Well I think that's the tricky part- whe. PS3 development does dry up, will 3rd parties be willing to make Vita exclusives?

For one thing, it doesn't come out for 3 weeks. The Wii U can quite conceivable hit 5K before it even releases.

For another, any expectation that The Wonderful 101 is going to be some sort of sales salvation would lead me to believe you've been puffing too many dragons that live by the sea.
I'd be just ok with being right The Wonderful 101 will be enough to prevent Wii U from going under 5k, as you conceive.

Well, it will eventually, but at that point the Vita either has things on its own or is probably fading into total irrelevance.

Doesn't the world already do that in general? What's really exciting about Japanese sales these days? I think it's indicative of the problem with a lot of companies at large. The fact is, 97% of Japanese sales -are- in fact irrelevant these days. That's why when big publishers make AAA titles these days, they don't even look at the Japanese market as the core base anymore, because they have failed to retain their attention and so they target the west instead. It's pretty pathetic!

We still have to double check the western ability to keep current/previous gen level of success. We can already judge Japan because, being primarly a portable oriented territory, and being 3ds and vita on the market since 2/3 years, we can say that this gen will not keep in line with the previous. Let's wait for the home console oriented western market once PS4 and Xboe will be released, to understand the matter

Btw, this has little to do with L5 hate/gloom/doom comments I usually see in MC threads, honestly. otherwise as said, close the topics because Japan is fuc*ed, right?
If their sales are disappointing because they are not at the same level of the incredible IE and Layton DS episodes, and if this is true for almost every other game and company, don't know what to say in the MC threads

I really doubt that among LBEX re-releases, the Layton (main and crossover) disappointing but still decent sales, the IE still solid sales, and the sales of their new IP like Yokai and Fantasy Life we should see Level5 as one of the troublesome softco in Japan
Always considering probable costs/efforts/development times/engine/assets and so on...considering that they develop middle/low budget games for 3DS (financial judgment, not quality-wise, where you think they are horrible, and I think some of them are at least interesting) and not AAA high budget HD 1080p 60fps blockbuster 1000000000000 $ budget games for PS4

You mean release cross games like devs are doing with Vita/PS3? But PS4 is a magnitude more powerful than what PS3 is so devs would either need to gimp the Vita game or PS4 game just to port it over as smooth as possible

as long as the game isn't a AAA 3d game it won't be much different to now, those games are already mostly out of the reach of vita's capabilities.

the expenses to consider are: the prices of vita's cards, and the cost of paying the store, sony, and atlus (vanillaware has never published their own game). but if they took in 10% of that, then they made at least a $420,000 profit from week one. that's pretty damn good, and they're going to get more over time and from overseas.
I'm not sure if Vanillaware gets anything from this sales, or if they only get payed the salary for developing the game. But for Atlus it should be quite profitable if they only spent around 1 million dollars on Dragon's Crown.

Yeah, sales from overseas will also increase the total profit indeed :) I didnt account for the digital sales either in my previous post (since we dont know how many copy it sold as digital download), but that would also bring in some extra cash there.

Get In! Yes! Damn right Ace Attorney 5 goes straight in at number 1 could not be happier to see this even if I know it's a massive franchise in Japan it's always nice to see :).

If selling between 10K-20K means it's saved, then sure, you can safe that the Vita is saved.

I'm not talking about HW sales but in terms of games coming to the platform. It's clear that Vita owners buy a lot of games so Japanese developers will be more willing to bring games to the systems.

It had a poor debut and massive shipment for sure, but can we please look at the overall picture? M&L games usually sell around 400k. BIS is the only game to sell 700k.

Oh, you're right, pretty much the same. For some weird reason I remembered only that Apollo broke 500k, so I thought that it debuted well over 300k. Curious to see AA5 legs then.
I'm expecting crazy good legs, and I really hope it sells more than Apollo, though it will be a difficult task (DS had tons of female and casual gamers).

Well it depends on the game honestly. If vita owners where really buying lots of games then they would at least appear on the Top 50 but right now no Vita game has stayed there

Well when will the PS3 stop getting supported? My guess is 2015 is when it will begin to dry up. I don't think non-AAA Japanese 3rd-parties will make the switch to the PS4 till 2015.

And software is selling on the Vita. I imagine they would release games for it. How does 2014 look though? I guess it may be a bit early, but that would be an indicator of things to come and show that 2013 isn't an off year of good support.

Then yes and no. No because there is the 3DS and the PS3 (and somewhat the PSP). Yes because it is easy to port PS3 and PSP games to the Vita.

Quick question and sorry if this has been covered before but these figures don't include digital sales do they like the Nintendo eShop?

Cheers :)

Nooo...
Please tell me that you don't believe what you heard!

I haven't heard anything.

I dunno. Considering it's a 3D game by the Prinny team, and they seem to have really struggled with the development with many delays, I wouldn't expect a great game... :(

What matters is how much each individual game perform (it goes for every game for every platform). It doesnt really matter how long it stays in the Top 50.

LOL what ?

Everything except MH and Nintendo evergreens dissapears from top 50 after few weeks in Japan.

Why is 70/90k good for DC on Vita but bad for W101 on WiiU?

Very different expectations and budgets.

101 is as close to a AAA exclusive release as Wii U gets. Dragon's Crown is by an incredibly niche developer and probably cost (Relatively) nothing to make.

Hm. I'm just thinking aloud, but aren't the smaller companies the ones that are most likely to remain on the PS3 longer? Aren't those also the ones who are more likely to sell the type of niche products that have proven successful on the Vita?

If there's a download card, they'll appear in Famitsu (I think?). Otherwise no. It also becomes somewhat silly to use in debate since most digital numbers are unknown.

Good to see vita getting a bump despite getting a multiplatform title. Kinda expected a bump for the PS3 as well seeing as there are 2 new titles. Oversaturation perhaps? Also, both versions cost the same in Japan? Odd move there.

Vita 2014:
-Freedom Wars
-Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F 2
-Disgaea 4: Return
-The Legend of Heroes: Ao no Kiseki Evolution
-Sega's 575 Music Game

I'm unsure when the Jump fighting game is releasing.

I may be missing some things, but I think that's what is announced currently.

That said, yes, it isn't an immediate problem, but it should still be one within the Vita's lifetime.
