Toriyama wants Lightning Returns' open world to beat Skyrim

An open-world is nice, but a huge world that's empty and just big for the sake of being big is not good and can hurt the game.

This world has to be living, breathing, full of secrets, people, side quests, wild animals, caves to explore, dungeons, and HD towns/cities.

Will it be like this? Only way to beat Skyrim!

Yeah, that's a big problem with something like Dragon's Dogma. The only thing on the open world is a handful of different kind of enemies, and ores/herbs for use in a poorly implemented crafting system. I love the game but it was 'open world for the sake of open world'. That is not the way to do it. Twilight Princes suffered from this too, it had a decent amount of large areas that took time to traverse but did not have much in them. Sure it's a nice idea to make a huge area and it looks nice, but if it's tedious to pass through, don't bother.

corridor or open world are the only options, there is nothing else. certainly final fantasy has never existed in any form but these. There is also no development time between 14 months and 10 years, these are the only options.
also all of gaf is one person.

Exactly. If they spent 3-4 years on an FF, even if it doesn't have the BEST GRAPHICS EVER, but had at least a lot of open areas, and dungeons, and side-quests and all that good FF stuff, they would be in a much better position. Tales games look nice and they'll have 3 mainline and 1 sequel this generation. As opposed to 1 mainline and 2 sequels, XIV isn't even out yet. :P

God can toriyama please be fired when this game flops

Announcing him stepping down at TGS before further unveiling FFXV and such would be like an early Christmas.

Lightning Returns is being made in under 14 months and has a timer. Open World with a restrictive timer so that you have to replay the game over and over. Please read the fine print next time.

What's that got to do with anything? You have no idea how restrictive the time limitation is or the way the amount of time remaining fluctuates according to success/failure in events.

Stop acting like you know exactly how its going to play when its obvious you don't and are just speculating negatively.

And having a time limit in an open world is actually pretty interesting conceptually, because for once learning to navigate around this large chunk of real-estate could be ludically useful. By which I mean finding shortcuts and alternative routes would be more than a convenience, they could actually useful and important as they would facilitate the luxury of time to do other things.

A game should not take up to a decade to release. Its poor management, they have been nothing but misguided for an entire generation. They were once considered the biggest pubs in the industry with FF considered a "big event" when ever it released. Compare last gen to now and you realize why people aren't as excited by SE as they use too.

More like "They shouldn't out their plans while they're merely in ideation phase" amirite?
Just ask Capcom

I hope they mean in making a memorable world. Then, that won't be difficult at all. If they are going for sheer scope, then that's just a bad move. Skyrim doesn't even need to be as big as it is.

This is the first thing that came to my mind.

If he's just trying to beat Skyrim in terms of sheer scope and size, them showcasing that empty desert a few months back actually makes more sense.

Read the interviews: It's supposed to be played over and over again since "It's impossible to experience all events in a single playthrough". If there is an interview contradicting this, please link me to it.

Forcing me to skip a bunch of content and forcing me to replay the game over and over isn't my definition of "interesting". But you're right, we'll wait and see if they just suck at describing their own game or not. Could be awesome. Could be annoying as hell. We'll see.

The instant, and I mean the instant that you start chasing another franchise's success, you're already acknowledging that you're a second place contender at best

At no point while playing any of my favorite FF games did I think 'boy, this game needs to be more like Skyrim'

Don't you think S-E knows how they fucked up with FFXV, and that is the reason they changed its title. And FF13 was a big event this gen (it being a big turd destroid FF13-2 chances of becomming an event). But FFXV will be a massive event next gen(and this).

We know very little of what kind of game it s, but every news we have been getting has been good. We know the battle system is good, there is cities and towns, its open world and everything we have wanted in a current gen FF. But all you guys are talking about is a breast implants and the shitty graphics it had a year ago.

What does "Impossible to experience all events in a single playthrough" mean exactly? To me it could be a simple case that certain events have a branching A/B path where taking one fork means you can no longer take the other, ultimately culminating in multiple endings.

Once again, I find myself asking, why are these bad things?

I guess it's a good thing that's not at all what they're doing then.

They should be trying to beat Skyrim in detail density, unfortunately we all know they aren't capable of either.

I already said that you're right and that I'm probably overreacting. We'll see how it turns out.

According to GAF:
Made Final Fantasy 13 a corridor game. Booooo Urns. This is shit, we want open world.
Makes Final Fantasy LR open world. Booo Urns. This is shit. We want something else.
Uses a ton of time on FFXV. Boooo, get your act together.
Uses a bit over a year on LR. Boooo. You should use more time to make it good.

And everyone who has played it (E3) loved the combat, praising it as the best ever. And the tidbits from the other thread was only positives. Get your fricking shit together Gaf. Its getting more and more reddiculuse here every month. With everyone trying to up the previously poster with negative shit. Try to be a little more thoughful in your comments.

No one cares if its open world or not. No one wants LR or gives a shit about FF13 saga or Lightning at this point, its been 8 years of this garbage games from this hack (Toriyama).

To beat Skyrim, you'd have to make the game customizable like Skyrim. They're taking all the wrong lessons.

If this game allowed you to play as somebody other than Lightning maybe they'd be getting somewhere ;)

I'm out of the loop, what's with the big breast posts? Lighting has a pretty small bust size.

A d-cup is small now?

lol

I'm sure Toriyama says a lot of things that only seem sensible in the bubble he's in.

There has never been a true open world FF game, but...try beating FF12 first. Or perhaps even FF7. In truth, LR will probably totally fail to do what Skyrim does best, while also failing to maximize on the strengths of prior FF games.

I would really like your ability to actually know what I like and want. So right now you are telling me that nobody wants to play and care about an open world FF with an amazing battle system?? Good to know.

Are you referring to this guy?

I heard he was an asshole too.

Make a open world as big as Skyrim ( theoretically) and add ingame time limit. Genius
lol
The real reson is to market the game like they did with XIII mentioning Call of Duty, Skyrim is the next "big" thing and it's RPG unlike CoD.

Chasing after the ideals of lowly western games instead of being the once proud flagbearer for a genre, yep sounds like Final Fantasy which has become the equivalent of a has been rock star trying to get back in the game and show kids its still cool.

Sony and SE held an event in Japan where people got to sample the game, some key staffers were there and someone asked if it was true whether or not they had increased Lightning's bust size, to which the answer was yes since apparently Toriyama demanded it. They also revealed this "Toriyama wants LR's open world to be better than Skyirm" thing there and a thread was made about it but everyone ignored that point and decided to focus on the boobs issue, now Nirolak decided to made another thread highlighting the Skyrim thing (despite it in fact being old news and already covered before here) and this happened. So yeah, boobs.

Judging by The Witcher 3, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Lightning Returns, the RPG inspiration torch has now been passed to Bethesda.

Other than Pokemon (which many have tried to copy with poor results), Skyrim is the highest selling single player rpg of all time I believe. Going to be a lot of "me too!" titles in the next 5 years trying to capture that audience.

"we want to beat skyrim" automaticly means it's going to be a failure on their part, just like Tomb Raider was concidered a "failure" with only 4 million copy sold

Final Fantasy XIII only came out 3.5 years ago. Final Fantasy XII is not even 8 years old.

That's a bit harsh.

There are good RPG games from the West. Baldur's Gate was developed in the West. Not that I don't agree also that SE should focus more on their unique taste rather than imitating the West too much. You lose your own voice that way, so to say, which I feel they have to a certain extent. I don't think there is anything wrong with taking inspiration from Western games or any games, but you have to know how to implement what you're taking and do it in an organic manner so that it feels right.

It'll be interesting to see if they get it right with LR, not that I have any hope for them after the previous two entries.

Also, more on topic, Toriyama is a dumbass, probably should just shut up and work on the game instead of humiliating everyone each time he opens his mouth, Lightning lover etc.

At first I was expecting this to be a simple wrap up of the XIII-2 story but they sure are ambitious about it.

Dark Souls difficulty, dead or alive boobs, zelda-esque influences and skyrim open worldness...

Astery stahp.

If you can find anything positive about roaming about in an open world filled with cities, towns, mountains, forrests and dessert on a chocobo, I really do not see what you want from a FF.

If you don't see how ridiculous what they are trying to do, and frankly having 0.1% to actually "beat skyrim" as Toriyama wants LR to do, then I have nothing more to say. Riding a chocobo, yup that's a game changer ok.

It's probably been said many times in this thread: ITS NICE TO WANT THING
he should form his own company, him and nomura to a much lesser degree are killing the franchise.

I guess it's a good thing that's not at all what they're doing then.

Who is that in your avatar? Source?
