Xbox One’s Game DVR, SmartMatch, NFL, TV Guide Restricted To Xbox Live Gold Members

Not unexpected with the current paywall policies. I could understand having to be a Gold member for uploading to the cloud but needing Gold just to record anything at all? Not okay.

I wonder if Twitch (or indeed any/all apps) will be Gold only too.

Wow i didnt actually expect this to be stuck behind live, kinda makes me wonder what other new stuff is behind the paywall.

Youtube is behind the paywall

so are other services that you are already paying for

I don't see how this was unexpected

Reading through this thread, the same people who are okay with defending MS continuing to put 90% of their console behind a pay wall are the same people who defend everything MS does and says.

It's pretty crazy just how far those people are willing to be pushed in the name of Halo.

Yep, pretty much.

Why do people keep saying that even though Sony continues to demonstrate that they lockout less things behind their Paywall than MS?

Many people probably feel that locking online play behind PS Plus was just the first step among many of becoming little better than MS. I can definitely understand how they feel, that was a fuckup IMO.

This is kind of stupid on a whole different level though. Why make people pay to market your games for you?

I don't think anyone is really shocked that Microsoft is arbitrarily doing this, what I find shocking is that several people are trying to legitimize/justify Microsoft's reasoning/thinking on this topic. It really comes down to "because we f*cking can and you'll gobble that sh*t up" nothing more, nothing new.
I won't be surprised if those are MS employees. There are a few around on this forum.

People forget or ignore that their biggest feature (free games) is behind a paywall. If you don't keep paying them, you can't play your games.

It's pretty much a rental service. It makes sense for that to be behind a paywall. Online play being behind a paywall, that's a big mess up though.

That's a valid opinion, as long as you didn't also want Sony to try to match or beat MS's online infrastructure. Because they couldn't do both.

Gold required for everything is why I abandoned 360 2 years or so after it launched. Absolutely pointless to own one without XBL.

Just like DRM, amirite?

No kidding. Not sure why Sony is always expected to follow MS on these stupid policies. Then again, folks continue to pay for Live just to watch Netflix.

I hope this isn't the case for the PS4. I mean it doesn't apply to me personally, since I have PS+ but for other users who don't always play online and want to record single-player it just seems a bit daft placing it behind a pay-wall. It is free advertising at the end of the day and the 'share' functionality is meant to be a core aspect.

It doesn't surprise me that MS has chosen to do this, since almost everything is behind a pay-wall. If it is being directly uploaded to the Cloud with no option to store it locally, then the choice makes sense. If not, then no, bad call.

Free games are their biggest feature? Here all this time I thought PS+ was a subscription service that gives you way more value for your money. Do you also expect Netflix streaming to work after cancelling your subscription?

Seems like a no brainer stipulation, you give people a pile of free games, of course they're not going to keep those games if they drop Plus.

They do get to keep the games they bought at Plus member discount prices though, which makes perfect sense.

I don't really care about infrastructure as long as the multiplayer just works. But I understand I'm probably a minority in that regard.

So we are moving from arbitrarily locking online features that are free on other platforms behind a paywall to also doing the same for offline features.

How do you like that taste of the corporate wet dream cloud computing / software as a service future?

Preach it durante.

See I could at least understand why Sony would lock multi-player behind the paywall. At least for first person studio games, server bandwidth isn't free. Ultimately I wish they'd give us a slew of Servers that we could opt to pay for in a Plus membership, or just keep it free and go pier to pier. But that's my pipe dream lol.

Locking something that costs nothing behind a paywall is however un-acceptable. Far worse however, is locking something you ALREADY PAY FOR behind ANOTHER pay-wall. That netflix bullshit is un-acceptable.

Xbox fans continue to go full retard.

Also, it'll be a beautiful day when console owners grow a spine. PlayStation Plus aside, online gaming should be free...

SmartMatch: iterate and improve a basic feature of online games, give it a name, and add it as a bulletpoint.

Well it does search for games while you are playing another completely different game. It's not exactly the same. Sony has yet to announce something similar.

They definitely need to charge to have any hope in hell. I find it amusing how the goalposts change for some now that Sony will have a paywall also

I've had LIVE and currently PS+ and no issue with either

meh

it would be much better to come up with something like:

"..also sub-hd recording (320x200) with one week wait time available to silver members"

at least we would get a laugh out of it...

it will be interesting to see how much stuff sony will leave out of their paywall.

Although I think PS Plus is a great value, how are they free games if you are paying for a service? MS really can take a page from Sony marketing because that is some excellent spin.

I just find it unbelievable they would lock game recording behind a paywall. People uploading their game videos to the internet is literally their users marketing their console for them. And they want to put that behind a paywall? That's just nuts.

Before they included the online requirement for PS+, what was the number one reason for joining if it wasn't for all the free games? I suppose that would vary from person to person.

Can you point us to another rental service that allows users to accumulate as many games, as long as you subscribed, for a similar price?

They've realized that they can get away with charging a monthly fee to unlock a paywall. I'd exploit the shit out of it too.

Wow, a lot of naive people around here... Like, do you not own a 360? Have you not pain attention to anything they've done over the past years?

The console isn't free, the games aren't free, you already paid twice, why a third time?

Makes no sense to push a game into the market that will continue to eat at it's profits in server bandwidth. Like I said, pier to pier should be free, servers shouldn't be. On the PC side of things I used to play on servers all the time, but it would usually be one of my friends paying for it.

Also, kudo's to company's that let you turn your box into a server. Man I'm going to miss Lightbox :(

I don't know... All the "you can turn the Kinect completely off, but it needs to stay connected to the XBox One" doublespeak seems to have been very effective.

People who like PS+ enjoy it for what it is, they aren't being tricked by Sony.

Jesus, fucking Sony taking games away for not paying for the service. Those monsters.

It worked when they held a large marketshare. But now that people are shopping for next gen features, not even bothering to reach Paywall parity with your better priced and more powerful competitor seems stupid.

Anyone who happily agrees that it is better that MS puts all this stuff behind a Paywall and actively defends that decision can be seen as a shill or a blind fanboy.

And according to your logic anyone who actively defends Sony charging for multiplayer is a fanboy as well. MS sees these things as part of a premium service. I imagine their cost for the services they provide is far greater than PSN will be even in this upcoming gen. Could it use some reworking? I think so especially for apps like Netflix, Hulu, and other free apps you can get on PCs and tablets, but Game DVR? That's a cool service, and depending on how solid it is, I can understand it being behind a pay wall.

I'd agree, but they have already conditioned a generation into double paying Netflix.

I would be getting Gold anyway but thats so stupid. Do they think people never want to dvr singleplayer?

Well MS did it first. In order for Sony to compete this gen, they had to give access to the Netflix app for free. I imagine MS's policy on Netflix and other normally free apps will have to change soon for MS to compete in this category.
