Same as original style 3DS.

Someone posted the fact-sheet a little higher up, re-posting for reasons:

How is this heavier than a regular 3DS???

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
I was kinda expecting this, but..
What in god's name is this monstrosity? It's terrible. Horrible. Why doesn't it flip. Shrug

Are some of you really so daft that you think this is designed for you? The hinge was removed because it is a liability for kids. Moving parts are bad. This thing is a brick designed for children who grab, pull and toss.

If you think it's ugly: it's not for you.

Sad to see I'm in the minority with my adoration of the new handheld! My wife and I both love it, and will be getting two on launch day along with Pokemon.

So this is basically them announcing 3d is dead and everyone should stop worrying about implementing it on 3ds. Very disappointing.

Why remove 3d for any reason (other than cost cutting)? If someone doesn't like it, they can turn it off!

I can't understand how some people are actually defending this POS.

Lots of contradiction too. "Wahh, but it's aimed at kids". Nintendo puts adults to demonstrate the system.

Asks questions so Ezalc doesn't have to
Huh, showed it to a couple of my RL friends and they really like the look and price.

Maybe we're wrong on this one? I know it's just empirical, but I find that interesting.

Terrible idea. This isn't going to sell well at all imo. And why on earth haven't they added another stick to the thing..?

They would have been better of releasing a 3DS+ with 2 circle pads imo.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Why are people posting images of the 10inch iPad?

The Wii U and the GamePad is what is attempting to leverage trends against the iPad as a livingroom tablet experience.

This NIntendo 2DS is going after this audience:

Entirely different subset.
Honestly, I respect the strategy (mostly for reasons I posted earlier).

I wonder if people will start to take this 'keep quiet, it's not for you' attitude with smartphone games.

No, I don't.

I dunno, smartphone games have clear target for everyone whereas this is advertised for little ones.

Complain about its aesthetics but not for "its target".

Not a particularly appealing design, too much empty space under the D-Pad and buttons. It has clearly been built using the cheapest components; mono speakers, 2D screen, flat design.

I also think changing the name to Nintendo 2DS was a bad idea, I still see people who think the 3DS is just a DS with a 3D screen, this is only going to confuse them further.

It also appears to be available only in Europe and North America. Is this the Wii Mini of the 3DS? (okay it's not that bad, at least it has Wifi)

It's ugly, and cute to me. Still weird.

Anyway, I wish I had saved posts of people who said they'd NEVER make a 3DS without 3D.

AGAIN, GUYS!!!

Watch this before posting: IGN:Who is the Nintendo 2DS for?

Well that certainly clears things up.
Makes sense in the end since kids under 7 shouldn't be playing in 3D due to possible eye problems.
I went WTF at first as well, but seeing how it's aimed especially at that demographic with an adjusted price and a form factor that can take some more abuse (dropping the system and such), it kinda makes perfect sense.
Certainly not aimed at us as a whole and I hope Nintendo is more clear about the demographic for this version.
Although thinking about that last part, perhaps shoving it down everyone's throats that this is "baby's first 3DS" might not be the way to go as several people in the very thread already mentioned that they really would like to pick one up now...

Whatever the case, you just gotta love the out of the blue announcement. :)

Certainly not the crying grown men of Neogaf.
Well you can't really blame the first reactions to something like this.

Although knowing the crying grown men of Neogaf, this will be ridiculed for years to come simply because it doesn't have Sony or heck even MS on the box.

my bad I thought it was $120 even at $129 its a good fucking deal for a parent getting one for a kid.

also nobody adds sales tax to the price when they are talking about retail pricing of a product. Some people don't have sales tax you know.

but I get what you are doing.

Yeah, not worth it at $140.00 ;)

This is a joke right?

No clamshell?!?

Seriously I don't get it. I understand the 2DS idea, but why get rid of the clamshell form factor? It's the best thing about the DS ffs. This portable console isn't even portable.

Go home Iwata, you're drunk!

Doesn't really look very practical for kids to use, buttons are all over the place and there's no way that thing will fit in a pants or jacket pocket so it's definitely getting chucked in backpacks with a bunch of other stuff and nothing to protect the screen. Hopefully it's built like a GameBoy.

Ah well, if they can play pokemon on it they probably won't care I guess.

how is a budget model designed for kids a indication that they are giving up on 3D? they still sell the XL and the OG 3ds.

Oh what the hell, I'll probably end up getting these for the kids. I'll stick to my XL myself though :p

But they are still going to lose that battle because tablets offer much more utility and much cheaper games.

As a parent, I would much rather give kids either of those....
