43 games in the released part, 41 games in the future part. This month is packed with high profile releases, so this thread doesnt see as many free offerings as the august one. Nonetheless, another month of Indie gaming goodness lies before us and I can promise you that there are also gems to be found among the gems you havent tried yet. Free Videogame album bonus, SpaceChem: http://www.jamendo.com/en/list/a83228/spacechem

Free Bonus album from last month because I am still madly in love with it: Pyramid - Lost in Space

We will also have a vote on the best games of the month in the last week of the thread. The results for june can be seen below. For some first time readers that wonder about my definition of "recent": We didnt have any major Indie thread in 2012 on GAF, so we are also catching all the titles that slipped through our net last year. Anyway, have fun with the games from this month!

Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):

1. Outer Wilds (6 votes) - Free (PC)
iVFO3oFeWYA96.gif

http://alexbeachum.com/archives/258
First person space exploration game, and it's awesome. Even though I suck at landing the shuttle, it was jaw-dropping doing seamless transitions from space exploring to landing on planets. Playing as alien space explorers with their own mythology is interesting. Nice to have a game purely dedicated to space exploring rather than all the strategy stuff that turns me off to those games.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Tessalation (6 votes) - Free (PC)
ibeO3jQ57wSyhR.gif
http://tessallationgame.wordpress.com/
In this first person time travel puzzle game, please help this blockheaded teacher through obstacles in her school. Charming and unique design, clever puzzles and interesting mechanics. Portal and the games that sprung from it are among the best puzzle platformers ever and if this game gets a full fleshed release it would stand proudly next to those.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

3. Against the Wall (5 votes) - Free Alpha (PC)
ibnyGeBEQtCzfd.gif

http://www.againstthewallgame.com/play/
It's a simple block puzzle game, but the abstract world is the star here. Once you get to the jaw-dropping city with multi-eyed trees that really just want to ram you into the wall, you know this game has something special going for it. Also, I love games where you can get to a really large height and then fall all the way down (Mirror's Edge) instead of a game-over screen in the middle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3. Gateways (5 votes) - $4,99 (PC)
i1bBWxiCzhDFs.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/216290/
How many games let you play as a lab inventor type? It's basically 2D Portal, as you can see in the gifs. Also, you get to kill monkey robots in a bloody display. I just wanted to call out, best map design EVER in a Metroidvania style game. If you're stuck, there is a hint system that you pay with points and the game takes over for the solution.
5. 1000 Amps (4 votes) - $4,99 (PC)
QECQVGE.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/205690/
It's a game of world discovery where you feel around the dark squared space to figure out where you can go, collecting lights along the way to complete rooms.It feels unique with a cute aesthetic and great sound design.
6. Ripple Dot Zero (3 votes) - Free (PC, Browser)
his has 90s action platformer stamped all over it. The momentum-based inertia, brilliant genre-hopping soundtrack, an ice-skating jetpack penguin with a sword, and that high-fi 16-bit aesthetic.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
This is a monthly podcast series that presents notable Indie Game soundtracks. A likeable host and guests, a fantastic track selection, interesting discussions and a focus for Indies will make this one a mainstay in my monthly threads.
Episode 4: Space pt.1, Stimulation
[Shatter | Risk of Rain | Cosmic DJ (live) | Waking Mars | Child of Eden | Ducktales]
These guys worked on a weekly YT video series that will present the newest Indie Game releases with small gameplay clips, impressions and anything important you might need to know. Definitely a great way to get an overview of recent releases and hopefully another mainstay for this Media Corner.
For 1-4 players (Local Co-Op) and it just looks insanely awesome as that gif above should show you. But that isnt even all of the eye candy you are going to see. Try the demo and you'll see that you are in for a treat.
Deios - Free Demo (PC)
ibflEJvaAIBi6L.gif
http://www18.zippyshare.com/v/33724958/file.html
As it all comes together, Deios ends up being a tear across beauty and corruption, each co-existing and fighting for your attention. It’s both an action game and a snobby art game about life and philosophy, but also the resentment of both. There aren’t many games like this, maybe a few, and I’ve never seen visuals matching this mood and sense of overbearing isolation against a harsh nature.
Divekick - $9,99 (PC, PSN)
DkwY7XC.jpg
Dream - $14,99 (PC)
dream.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/229580/
Better still, the focus is on exploring dreams of both otherworldly beauty and inexplicable terror. . Dream features a narrative split into three acts with multiple paths and endings that are determined by how you explore and move between dreams. Each act will immerse you in new worlds that help to decipher Howard's past, emotions and ambitions.
In Nightmares, the game's lead wakes up from a horrific dream, only to discover he's only awakened in a new nightmare, the beginning of a terrible cycle that will create a basic structure for the narrative. This very interesting concept is currently on Kickstarter life support, so give it some love!
i4epWNuxPXqPz.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/227080/
If anyone liked Alice Madness Returns or Ico, check it out. Deals with similar themes and has that similar crazy level design. Emotional game about leaving a bad past behind that is far less heavy-handed that I expected (all the hype for the game was because the creator was making a game about his alcoholic abusive father). Surprisingly enjoyable 3D platformer for such a small team, has some good puzzles, and can be gorgeous at times.
Pid - Free Demo/ $9,99 (PC)
Skullgirls - $14,99 (PC, XBLA, PSN)
zI3ZlYg.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/244710/
Skullgirls exemplifies the beauty that can happen when people who absolutely love the fighting game genre are put in charge of a title. Skullgirls has quite a few signs of rushed development, but at its core, it is one of the most well-thought-out and impressive fighting games on the market right now.
skyRogue - Free (PC, Mac, Linux)
ubx.gif
http://nihilocrat.tumblr.com/
A simple little dogfighter with a slick aesthetic and a great arcade flight model. The idea is to create a realtime combat roguelike with aircraft, and while the roguelike elements are yet to be put into the game - super curious about that - skyRogue is already pretty awesome.
tkfraU3.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/207140/
It's a 4 player competitive platformer. The goal is to run off the screen and leave the others behind. You have to manage the level and watch your step, all while trying to slow down the others. You will have to learn levels as you play, and pick the right route to help you win. This game has a chance to be something special.
Spelunky - $14,99 (PC, XBLA)
9Te0U5n.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/239350/
Spelunky is a unique platformer with randomized levels that offer a challenging new experience each time you play. Journey deep underground and explore fantastic places filled with all manner of monsters, traps, and treasure. You'll have complete freedom while you navigate the fully-destructible environments and master their many secrets.
Starsector - $10 during Beta @ 50% off (PC, Mac, Linux)
2qro8v.gif
http://fractalsoftworks.com/preorder/
The combat is a top down shooter that is pretty deep. There are a bunch of different weapon types and where you hit the enemy matters (i.e. you can disable a ship by firing at the engines.) There are some light RTS elements where you assign orders to your fleet, but you only have a limited number of orders per battle which encourages you to participate in the fight and minimizes micromanagement. The big draw for me is the RPG aspect of the game. You start off as a single ship and crew, but you slowly grow your fleet by capturing / buying new ships.
Teslagrad - Free Demo (PC, Mac, Linux)
7u6SVh8.png
http://www.desura.com/games/teslagrad
Teslagrad is a puzzle platformer with action elements. Magnetism and other electromagnetic powers are gained throughout the game and must be used to overcome the game's challenges and explore the long abandoned Tesla Tower. The game is set in a steampunk-inspired vision of old Europe, and through voiceless storytelling we intend to tell the story of the fall of the king of Electropia and the rise of a new (and not necessarily better) order.
http://www.zafehouse.com/
It's a text based zombie survival game, where you manage your survivors and more importantly have to deal with and mend (or not) their relationships as you try to survive as long as possible. Spread rumors to keep tempers low or turn the others against a unliked survivor. There are roguelike elements as well, such as procedurally generated towns and survivors and permadeath.
Hi Toma, do you ever list Early Access games or demos?
Constantly. I list games twice. The first time they are playable in whichever form and recommended by someone, and the second time for a full release. If games arent recommended/talked about in here, I cant list them though as I dont know about these games or whether they are actually good. Another reason why I try to convince people to always post about anything they discover and post on GAF in here.
Finding Teddy and Doorways are 2 examples from the current thread. Finding Teddy is currently just a demo, and Doorways is currently still in Beta.
Great OP Toma, got my work cut out for me this month but I'll make sure I'll do impressions of all I can. Just FYI, but the link to Mouse Craft has an extra I in front so it is broken (although easy to navigate to), also the price for Spelunky is listed as 'PRICE.'
New thread! Got some recommendations and impressions to post later
Hey, Toma, was I the only person to recommend an overlooked indie in August's thread?
Outside of the Wayback Wednesday posts, you mean? Yeah, I think you were. I'll go back to check again and will PM you later.
Corrected, thanks.
Great work. There's some really great looking games here. So many so, in fact, that it's hard to keep on top of them all.
The easiest way to balance "Indies to play"/"time available" is probably to make sure to check the games that come out on top of the voting each month to make sure to at least grab the ones we were most excited about.
Toma, can you please add Freedom Planet to the OP? It's been Greenlit and will be releasing next year.
It already was in the OP of a previous month. I'll feature it again on the full release.
Nice, looking through the OP, I've played eleven of those games and own four of them :)
Toma, what about Boson X? It released end of August. I'll be posting detailed impressions so I guess it'll end up in the October OP
Yeah, this month is slightly ridiculous. And which two games did you mean?
Lots of cool stuff in there. What's the word on Shelter, worth it?
From what I've read it's very short, but the press loves it. I'm still waiting to play it, as they announced that they're adding controller support after the weekend.
Added to the OP because I meant to include that in the OP anyway. Other games will go to the next thread.
Lots of great games indeed. I cannot see Spelunky not winning in the end.
I have finished it in an hour and I don't like it so much: it is original, but Shelter is not a game as polished as Pid.
Cool to see my impressions, gifs, and favourite games in the OP :D
btw Fran Bow (my #1 game of August) indiegogo ended and was successfully funded.
This month is again crazy. Need to get around to Shelter and Gone Home, trying to find time for one-sitting sessions. Downloading so many free demos right now, thanks Toma. Here's a list to make it easy.
FREE DEMOS:
Toma, are most of the Upcoming Indies not playable yet? Out of those, Neverending Nightmares is, and it should say free demo next to it.
Didnt realize it was, must have missed it last month. Could you make another post in this thread with impressions and a screenshot? I'll include it next month then.
I can actually, because its rather expensive with no free demo and this month is packed with great stuff. I wouldnt be able to make a guess who might win this month.
So Neverending Nightmares isn't going in the OP? It really needs the exposure, since it has a Kickstarter now and the dev has a lot emotionally and financially riding on the game
Holy crap at OP. I have a bunch of indie games on PC but this thread made me anticipate many upcoming ones! Im so glad that kickstarter and indie games are doing so well, its to the point where THIS is what i want and like to play. Big devs dropped the ball by going for the big cash cows. Fun and adventure is where its at.
I made impressions in the thread for it:
Just played the demo. It's only 15-20 min long. Holy shit was that terrifying. The soundscape alone had me tense. Had literally chills down my spine walking down corridors. There were about four moments and they all made me jump.
It's also doing what seems to be the nightmare version of Inception where you're not sure which layer of dream world/reality you're in.
GO PLAY THE DEMO
So... Elliot's Quest... is it any good? That reminds me: If you're in this thread and haven't played Treasure Adventure Game, you need to go and fix that.
Yes.
Elliot Quest
434440653_640.jpg
forest.png
It's definitely a throwback 2D metroidvania action platformer with a top-down overworld. There are many nods to Zelda and it can get quite addictive. Whether you go up and down, you want to test yourself in the world travelling. Gamer instinct might tell you that going lower will mean a harder challenge with a greater reward. But do you want to risk it when you don't know how far the next checkpoint is? I think I forgot to mention, it's a friggin' browser game!
Now consider that for every month of the year. Just thinking about the sheer numbers of awesome games makes me feel all happy inside.
I second the recommendation for Elliot Quest. I really liked it, even though it feels a bit slow for an action adventure. The sense of exploration, progress and diverse enemy patterns really worked well in my opinion.
I just wanna get most if not all of these - but I want them all on steam :/
I've been there too. You'll hit yourself on the head once you finally decide to let go of that Steam requirement and see how much stuff you missed over the years. This thread helps unearthing some gems, but if you dont play some games monthly, there are a few games that will be forever lost to you, because people wont shout about it next year.
