Sony is preparing to reveal the final piece of its PS4 hardware strategy at TGS by showcasing a PlayStation-branded virtual reality head-mounted display, CVG has learned.

It originally intended to reveal the Sony headset at Gamescom but plans fell through at the eleventh hour. The company is currently weighing up whether the PS4 device should be pitched as a key differentiator for the console or a non-essential add-on.

The matter has been slightly complicated, but not derailed, by the growing industry support for Oculus Rift. Sony's device will be a categorical rival to Oculus, and for months there have been rumours suggesting the two companies are seeking a partnership.

A games developer familiar with Sony's plans, who wished to remain anonymous, told CVG that Evolution Studios is currently working with the device to simulate a cockpit view on its PS4 title Drive Club.

Considering OR really has set the stage for this...

This will either be so good or really bad for them. I can see people being super salty about Sony not supporting OR but they have done headset displays for a while now and this is the logical next step for them and Yoshida himself kinda hinted at this when he was asked about OR support.

But the thing needs to be affordable.

Thats pretty fast, i kinda expected both Sony and MS to first start pushing this next year or something. You just naturally assume these large companies are too slow to adapt and incorporate this

I hope VR really takes off and all companies go for it, the more support = the better.

argh...

Destiny + VITA remote play is great but I can deal without it to get the MS exclusives.

Destiny + VR is another matter...

Yes, please be true. Oculus is so good, if Sony can match that in the console space and actually push it so it's developed for. YES.

Happy to see that they may have left a huge reveal for Japan, the system has been very western focused so far (from the reveals to the content).

I have zero interest in motion controls (be it Kinect or wiimote/move) but this, this could be huge.

I wonder if this will hurt my eyes like 3D does...
Anyone with experience with Rift, has eye pain been a general complaint?

Btw: it is rumored, that MS works on something similar with the Fortaleza Glasses.

But I guess they won't show this off in the near future.

Very Cool.

However, if Sony attempts to make this a "format war" a la Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD, I don't think they'll win against the Rift this time (too many big players on board with it now). Just my opinion.

I doubt Sony will go after the PC market with it so it just becomes OR for PC and SonyOR for PS4. The best we can hope for is that they can make it easy for developers to get it working for both.

Maybe MS will go for OR route. That would be the best step for them.

Isn't their current HD headset "prototype" over a thousand right now? One with two 720p OLED screens?

I wonder if this unit will be as almost as the console in the end?

While I am definitely interested in getting this type of tech on a home console (either Occulus or 1st party version); it is not a game changer for PS4 in the least.

Could be a game changer, but with it not being standard I foresee extremely limited support with no game truly being made to feel perfect on it.

Thats going to be the biggest problem with this whole movement on both PC and Consoles, no developer can afford to only make games for VR specifically, and I'm betting to make a game feel good and right in VR, your going to have to change a lot of mechanics that won't translate well from Non-VR to VR.

I was expecting something like that but not that soon. And possible Driveclub support? Hell yea!! It's gonna be an amazing gen if all of this is true.

How can they be debating this 2 months before launch!?
