14 minutes of open world Watch Dogs gameplay [hacking, combat, driving]

Watching this now:

He can't hack people's phones without his backdoor into CTOS, but he can hack cameras and everything else?

He can steal the server codes by looking at a particular guard through the camera??

Did he have to kill the guards to enter the access point?

This all seems really counter-intuitive and nonsensical.

It seems pretty standard affair for hacking to be represented in such a way in the media, check out the BBC's knowledge:

This was put in an actual news story about hacking peoples bank details but i can't find the story sadly.

Wow mephixto, still using this awful video compression filled screenshot of Infamous SS to downplay the games visuals. Despite so many of us posting so many better direct feed video screen grabs that don't look like arse.

It's like GaneFAQs levels of fanboy selective screen grab posting.

You must have posted this exact video capture who knows how times now lol.

So if we post Watchdogs from an awful video compession filled screenshot, the game looks bad but if someone do the same with SS it's not. Double standard much?

Also there are some things that compression can't blur on that screen like objects casting no shadows, aliasing everywhere, etc.

Definitely. People need to stop taking captures from heavily compressed segments of video as indicative of the actual level of detail and graphical potency in a game. They're some form of representation, sure, but not enough for fair pixel peeping.
Yes. It would help if Ubi released more properly encoded footage and not this crap.

Yep.

Haven't really paid attention to this until the initial few trailers and I'm pretty surprised how downgraded it looks. Quite a bit of pop-ins and aliasing.

Also, not sure if it's just me but it looks like the gameplay will get pretty repetitive after a while. Already got bored after this 15 min video.

So how did the invading player find this player's game? Can anybody jump into anybody else's world at any time?

How many players are going to hack away the money I stole fair and square from single mothers?

There could be some interesting emergent scenarios that come about in players working at odds with other players, but I hope the motivation is more than "this aggression will not stand, dude".

Heh. The idea of building systems based upon Hollywood's conception of computers and hacking is a hilarious one.

To people complaining about the hacking, would a minigame be better?

I'm not sure what the best way to represent hacking in a game is. The concept they have, where you use cameras to find other cameras and things to hack, is intriguing to me even if it doesn't make any real-world sense.

I do hope you have the option of keeping other players out. I'm not into that. Stay the hell out of my single player adventure, thanks. I'm going to have to wait and see what the deal is on that, but otherwise the game looks fun.

I'm really not too concerned about how 100% realistic the hacking is. Complete realism has never been a requirement in any game I've ever played so I'm not about to start requiring that now.

I'm more worried about people just getting close and shooting me in the head.

Hope you aply the same you said to this:

There is just massive aliasing going on. Everything looks pretty good.

WD has the other problem, the game looks terribad regardless of aliasing. Still saying it looks worse than current gen games (gtav) is retarded.

Heh. The idea of building systems based upon Hollywood's conception of computers and hacking is a hilarious one.

Although they haven't released anything official they have confirmed in interviews you can play solo and not allow people in your game, I imagine it's a toggle in the options menu that will flag you as an available world, I would also assume you could either join a friends game as per shadowfall in the gamescom conference or you could bring up some sort of matchmaking service. But the latter half of this is just assumptions.

My complaint isn't so much about realism - it's more that I just don't understand whatever funky logic they have going on, and the video didn't seem to explain it. Just how in the world do I steal server codes by way of peering at a guard through a camera?

It doesn't have to be real, but its off-putting when it doesn't make any kind of sense.

GTA IV's Mafia Work was one of my favorite bits of co-op this gen, so I'm definitely open to the idea of hunting down or otherwise sabotaging my friends in open world scenarios. Especially when drunk.

Speaking of how simple the hacking is...

does anyone else find it a little odd how every game this gen that has a dumb 'hacking' element usually has SOME form of extra depth to that aspect, like a mini-game or a something, but the one game that is about hacking, you press X for victory?

I mean I suspect that'd get old if you had to do it for every phone, but the main box you have to hack... you'd think it'd take a little more effort in the hacking arena.

That shit had me laughing so hard.

'You just hacked into someone's webcam. You can hear a baby wailing in the background; so this is the home of a new mother. Her bank info is out in the open guys. Obviously if you hack this and take the mother's money, nobody will see you and you won't lose reputation. It's up to the player to choose to hack it or not. So this game is all about MORALLY GRAY actions.'

Seriously what in the universe is gray about that action? That'd be instant -10,000 Paragon right there lol

They mentioned Breaking Bad.
They are probably talking to #TeamWalt.

Getting to the main box is the challenge.

This game looks great. It was on my "maybe" list of purchases next gen, but after watching this, it just rushed its way to the top of the list.

I can't wait for people to put GTAV in their tray and see how it looks/runs nothing near this game. How is that even an argument...

The camera helped you identify the guy, but you still had to hack him once identified. There were two objectives - identify, then hack.

There has to be some reason why you can still do some hacking without the CTOS - possibly that just unlocks full hacking functionality.

Also, he didn't have to kill anyone. Dude said there was an option to hack the CTOS without even going on site. Seems like you can be a pretty bad character in this game, stealing money from single moms and killing security grunts, or you can choose to do things more responsibly.

"Here we can choose to hack into this mother's bank account information. The choice is totally up to the player, and just like in real life your decisions aren't black and white but there shades of grey. Here's an ATM, let's withdraw some of that money."

Even Syndicate had an active reload element to it.

It's not, few people are really making that argument. However, those of us with a competent PC are eagerly awaiting to put GTAV in our "trays", in which case we'll get 1080p, 60fps+, every effect maxed and then in a few months slap on the enb mod and get a game that melts minds for being a current gen port.

I've got a monster PC as well, so I understand you there. I was speaking in terms of console since thats what the focus of this thread is.

I think everyone needs to understand that consoles don't compete with PC's (high end ones at least) in terms of graphics, ever.

It would get annoying having to play the minigame given how much hacking is going on in this game. That said, I hope there is some other element to the hacking that we are not seeing. It seems strange to simply press X to win.

Maybe in the beginning there is some kind of minigame but as you hack more often it becomes almost automatic? I don't know.

So much pop in, I hope that you can fix that in the PC version (but it always seems most devs are blind to it somehow),

That's true, but WD comes out on current gen consoles, too, so a fair comparison can be made (as soon as they show current gen footage).
