Indie Games [September] Now Voting - Post 878!

If the lower price hadn't sealed the deal, this definitely did:
Nothing that can’t be conquered if you take things slowly and methodically, analyzing each threat as you reach it, but the second you start to feel overconfident is when you’ll jump forward instead of safely advancing with your shield at the ready, and then you’ll die, dragging you back a long way.

Love the sound of that. Dark Souls conditioned me to love games where you have to slow and cautious to survive.

Also this looks awesome:

Thanks for the heads up. Thinking:
Zafehouse
Miasmata
SotS: The Pit
Lucius
Strike Suit

Just curious: do you really have time to play all the games you're buying? Everyday I see you posting about a new game you bought and I'm getting really jealous at how much free time you seem to have.

Classes three days a week. One of those days I don't start till 2:30. The other days I don't start till 12:30 and have a two hour gap between classes. I would prefer to just get Zafehouse and Miasmata at the discounted price. Or I must just get Mobiloid instead of a bundle

Have you played Anodyne or Dyad? I would recommend those two, specially Dyad.

We are talking about indie games here so that's why I mentioned only indies. But I do think the same about non-indie games with the exception of first party titles. But keep in mind that I'm talking about "moneyhatted" games, those that get financial help to guarantee exclusivity. If a dev thinks that his game should be released only on PS4 for whatever reason besides Sony paying him to do so, that's fine. And with financial viable I mean: is it profitable to port the game to a given platform?
Well, that really comes down to the sliding scale of how possible it is to make a successful game alone versus with the support provided by going exclusive, and that's a scale that isn't visible to us. I'm sure most developers that get money hatted could make the game without first party support, but that also involves a degree of personal financial risk that we as consumers can't quantify.

If you've proven yourself through previous projects, would you rather put your future on the line again with another completely independent game or get a guaranteed degree of financial and promotional support that would ensure your continued viability as a developer? That's not a rhetorical question, it's one that every developer that has the opportunity to get money hatted has to answer. I'm with you in that I generally don't like it (BRING JOURNEY TO PC GOD DAMMIT), but I have to respect a developer's decision to do what they think is best for them, whether it's because they think that they'll do better with first party marketing, they enjoy the direct line to platform holders, or they just want the luxury of avoiding crunching in 100 hour weeks for however long to get a game out at a certain quality because they're running out of money or past a viable release window.

I would avoid Strike Suit, it looks nice but that is all it does well.
Thanks for the suggestions. Even though I really want Miasmata and Zafehouse, I think I'll get Mobiloid instead. Rather not expand my backlog that much and the Mobiloid demo is really fun. Plus I need to save space for Audiosurf 2 and Volgarr

I'm a bit grumpy right now.

I really wish there were indie horror games that avoided this incredibly annoying trend of not having any weapons. Something along the lines of Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Two horror releases recently, both featuring weaponless combat; it just doesn't interest me. Do you know what indie game did suck me in?

Betrayer.

That game is AMAZING, and the best horror experience I have had in years. I actually felt afraid, and actually had to stop playing, not out of boredom, like Amnesia, but genuine fear.

--

On another vein, someone tweeted about an indie game today, describing it as a voxel roguelike. I lost all interest--seen plenty of roguelikes lately, and honestly, they're starting to bore me as much as the many voxelgame clones, multiplayer-only shooters, quirky puzzlers, and 2D platformers that plague indie gaming.

...then it got described as an Immersive Sim, which got me more excited, since that's my favorite genre (and practically extinct--nearly every new IS has been too arcadey and consolified for my taste). But my interest is tempered by the whole roguelike idea. I mean, Immersive Sims were all about level design, and I have no idea how someone expects to make a great immersive sim if the levels are random.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who's getting a bit tired of roguelikes.

Strike Suit Zero and Infinity are super fun and I love them, even if the first game takes a while to give you the strike suit, features weird difficulty spikes, and a kinda-boring final level. From a pure combat perspective, Strike Suit Zero is pretty fun. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I'm hearing bad things about Zafehouse. Way better idea than execution.

I don't know if the word has exactly the same meaning in english than it has in portuguese, but I would say are becoming "choosy".

I considered myself difficult to please and your experience pretty much matches mine. In my experience, the majority of games out there are average and only manage to bore me. For example, I love platformers, but at the same time I can't stand like 90% of the platformers out there.

Just saw this Kickstarter, thought it looked worth bringing up:

Magic Meisters: An Open World Co-op Multiplayer RPG

I've got a soft spot for games with that simple colorful look, and open world action RPGs are my cup of tea (sounds a bit like Cube World minus cubes at this point), but man, I don't know what they're thinking with that minimum Kickstarter buy-in. $20 to get a copy of the game. Comes with beta access, but you would think that they would have a $10/$15 dollar tier without beta access to make it more attractive to the impulse buyers. They're offering beta to pledgers above $15 but there's no $15 tier, and even if you do pledge at this hidden level, it seems like you don't get the game once it's released. And the next tier after $20 is $35? It's almost like they made this Kickstarter without seeing at the downward trend in funding since the big names ran their campaigns.

Wish them the best of luck, though. Hopefully some of you will feel like funding it for me.

Seems funny though. Why not offer that price on their own website as well? Why punish people who bought it directly from them, such as myself :p
They said the price is higher because you get the DRM free version and a Steam key, compared to just getting a Steam key.

Edit: did you get alpha/beta access? If so, any impressions?

Still makes no sense. Other devs definitely don't do this :/

Was not in the beta no.

Yeah, charging more for the DRM free version is a bit bad form here.

:/

So much for trying to help them out by giving them the 30% cut steam takes from them
I have had this happen to me a couple times. Devs sell the game on their site and then discount on launch week for Steam. It really irks me because you should be treating your early adopters better. "Blaming" it on the DRM-free copy is even worse and a good way to get the anti-DRM crowd riled up.

I guess that's the thanks we get for trying to help them out by buying from them directly :/

To be fair, these guys are published by AS. They probably have no say in launch week discounts.

Then come out and say it. Don't claim the price difference is due to having the drm-free version included.

Screw it. Going to enjoy the game anyways...

Has there been any word on Cube World updates in the past couple of months? I have been looking around for info and it seems the dev doesn't communicate at all. I picked up the game when it launched based on the list of stuff on their website that they would be adding but this is feeling like a take the money and run move now. I bought into Starbound when they opened up pre-orders too and that game is taking for-fucking-ever but at least they communicate progress regularly and interact with people.

I know this probably sounds like whining but if you can't even take a couple minutes to say you are working on updates for your paying customers then you shouldn't be working for yourself.

We don't have "get out of jail free" cards, but if we did, she'd have one.
Looks like Apple Jack 1 & 2 are making their PC debut in the latest Indie Royale. They're not even available for purchase standalone yet.

According to the GL page the two-pack will be under $5, so depending upon when you see this you could be better off waiting for the Desura listing to pop up if you don't want anything else in the bundle.

Antichamber for $6.79 or wait for Volgarr?
Personally? I'd say Volgarr since what it aims to do is far less common, and I want to see that rewarded/supported.
To be more objective about it, they're such different games that you should probably go by what you want to play more right now. Do you feel like a sidescrolling action game or a first-person puzzler?

Emphasis on the "right now" since neither is an optimal price if you're not sure you'll play the games quite soon. Steam sale season is on the horizon—we've got smaller ones like Halloween and Thanksgiving and then the big Holiday sale in December. So if you've already got enough on your plate for a few months...

When it comes to threads introducing new games like this, you should include the name of the game with the picture. Takes less effort than having to drag and drop it in Google Image Search to find out.

It's called Volgarr the Viking for those interested.

http://www.volgarrtheviking.com/

Edit: I see it was mentioned in other posts but seeing your post alone with the pic, I didn't associate it since the quoted post didn't mention the name. My bad, kind of.

Game look good. I loved Rastan back in the day.

No problem. When I do recommend games, I do follow the recommended format. Actually I'm surprised there isn't already an OP-ready post for Volgarr

Incognita, the turn-based strategy game, is now avalible for alpha access. $20 and includes an extra key. This is from the Mark of the Ninja and Don't Starve dev, so it should be good.

I'm going to dive in, will post some impressions later.

Probably not going to have a chance to play until tomorrow. Between this and Godus, this week hurts.

Golly those guys know how to make a beautiful looking game. Might seriously consider grabbing it once my current money situation clears up (which is tomorrow hopefully hoho.)
