The Wonderful 101 |OT| Diplomacy has failed

Second boss was pretty goddamn awesome. First one was good, but I never need to do that button-mashing shooter section again. Similarly, I find the gamepad sections in Operation 1-2 to be pretty gimmicky and kinda assy.

But the combat and traversal stuff is aces.

Did NoA really undership another game, one that doesn't even have a lot of demand? A bad time to do that, there's so many new games out that someone might just pick something else up if they don't see W101 in a store.

This is the kind of game that needs as much shelf space as possible because the cover really stands out and attracts attention.

I've beaten the game several times now and I've gotten hit by an obscured enemy I couldn't see or account for maybe like 3 or 4 times, and they were all the tiny little guys.

Almost all foreground objects become transparent if the action is taking place behind them. You can control the level of zoom at almost any playable point in the game.

The camera really is not an issue at all. if you get hit, it's because you haven't read an enemy's attack telegraph or were looking at the wrong part of the screen.

Okay, so it doesn't sound as bad as some reviews made it seem to be. I wonder why Kotaku said what it said then. Anyway, thanks for letting me know. You too, Frodo and marc^o^.

Seems like W101 copies didn't arrive where I live, and will hopefully reach tomorrow.

For the people that are playing it, how is the game? Amazing? Incredible? More fun the Bayonetta?

How difficult is regular Normal mode? Game Over inducing, is rather easy?

There's no real game over. If you die, you go to a screen asking you if you want to continue, then you just pop back in to whatever situation you were in.

It can be pretty difficult, especially since you won't have all your skills.

Playing on normal and loving it. I was going to start with easy, then increase difficult on a second play-though, but I figured I had sufficient training on the demo.

On my second play through, I plan to use Japanese voices. I can't understand how people complain about the lack of quality Wii U games, yet let this one slide right by them. What kind of dedicated gamer would this game not appeal to? I just don't get it. It's games like this that keep me in the hobby.

This game is all kinds of awesome, so far. I'm less than an hour in, and I understand it only get ridiculously more epic. Wonderful!! Can't wait to dive back in!

Same on Hard mode? Still, I think I'll start on Normal then when I start. Thanks.

It has little to do with shipping and a lot to do with ordering. Stores don't order games they don't expect to sell. The bulk of W101 is most likely sitting in back of Gamestop/Walmart/etc. warehouses.

It was a choice between this and P4A as a "Treat myself because new job" present.

I'm running through Hard difficulty now and everything is just making perfect sense, God this has such an amazing flow about it when it all clicks.

...I think I made the right choice.

Edit : Just realised my first post ever was is in this thread and my avatar is Wonder Red. Yikes.

Went to Futureshop to grab a copy. Wasn't on the shelves, asked an employee to check the back. He comes out with some bullshit excuse about "oh we don't have it", I go but the release date is today and it shows up as in stock on the website. His reply "oh they probably need to be scanned into the system because they're still in the back". I've worked my fair share of retail, that is the most bullshit excuse I've ever heard. They always find a way to fuck me over somehow, ALWAYS.

This game is kicking my ass up and down on Normal, I got stuck at a couple places and the way to go wasn't very clear, wasted about 10 minutes shooting the
anti-air cannon
from the rooftop before I found out you could reach it from the ground.

Am I imagining things or holding L let you draw a bit faster?
It's not really useful once speed liner is unlocked though.

To those that finished the game, what are the best wonderful blocks to buy and equip? They are expensive and I want to maximize my purchases.

went to the big Seattle fred meyer to buy this this afternoon, they have a huge sign up in the wii u section for wonderful 101 but I can't see any copies so I assume its sold out or something. I ask the employee if they have any remaining copies of this game that they have a huge sign advertising (which hes never heard of)... he goes to the back and procures like 10 copies and I'm the only person that's even asked about it so far.

Boss 2 > 1 >> 3

That one was just really long and disjointed, but also rather easy. Got the Platinum on the first attempt. The Op itself was pretty boss though, but man those turtles are fuckin' annoying.

Hero Counter is my favorite. It slows down time much like Unite Bomb does, and, as such, it is great for setting up combos.

I also use whichever doubles the Unite Gauge's recovery time.

A lot of people like Ukemi too.

Gamestop got one copy today and it wasn't a preorder, so naturally I got it. It's still in the shrinkwrap as I'm still contemplating whether or not I want to actually keep it, so I'll digest some impressions (not reviews) and whatnot. I generally like Platinum, but I hated Metal Gear Rising so they're really hit or miss with me.

So, I believe I just finished the Op. 001. I had to stop playing since my head began to hurt, both from the sheer intensity of the finale(can't tell you how many times I thought it was over until it revealed yet -another- phase) and the camera (which didn't really becme an issue until I gathered a large amount of wonderful recruits and then fought a large amount of G.E.A.T.H.J.E.R.K. goons and the camera decided to pan the fk back to show it all and I couldn't see shizzz so I was leaning forward and squinting in an attempt to find where the heck I was).

I dunno quite how to feel amount the mechanics themselves, however. TW101 is waaaay closer to the DMC/Bayonetta school of thought than I originally perceived. Given that, I'm sure of having to draw the shapes. It's not an inherently bad design, but I'm not entirely sure what it adds as opposed to just having a weapon switch button. It's still early, so that could change, but I'm not yet persuaded.

And dear lord that theme song blaring during the Prologue...

I'm cautiously optimistic.

I really did not care for MGR but have enjoyed TW101 so far.

I picked my copy up at gamestop of course it was already opened and the box was all dented up....I'm really not sure why I continue to shop at gamestop the last like 4 NEW games I have purchased from them have all been opened with various stickers and crap on them and sub par box condition. I first checked walmart and of course they did not have a copy. I got the only non preorder copy of the game at my gamestop. If Nintendo would stop releasing games on Sunday all my problems would be solved.

The only thing I liked about it was the combat system, which I get is a big part of the game, but I felt like the level design and narrative were total garbage. I'm aware that plenty of folk find the narrative in MGS to be garbage in general, but at least in Kojima's games I can manage to care about what's going on. This was just... I have no idea. I just thought it was a huge missed opportunity. It felt really half assed to me and I found it to have a lack of content, and the combat system only really truly shined for me during a couple of the bosses.

To the newcomers:

PLAY IT ON EASY FIRST!!!!

I know most of us want to play games the way they are meant to be played but you will not know how it will work in the beginning. Easy to provide the perfect challenge so it wil not be a cakewalk.

Take my advice, go easy first, you'll thank me later. Oh and don't do very easy, I think that option will deter your overall enjoyment.

Well then... i say it´s a pretty safe bet to open this sealed box of yours. ;)

______

My tips for the newcomers:

1. Turn the rumble off.
2. Buy Wonder-Guts
3. Don´t leave the school until you pressed at least each button once to see what it does. Don´t complain after 3 hours in that you didn´t know how to zoom in or out or how to block.

It ties into EVERY aspect of the game, from puzzle-solving to team-management and the way you move around in the world. Then obviously, there's the combat system.

Since you actually draw the shapes rather than merely activate them, you can determine their size (=strength), the time of their activation (which can coincide with a Skill attack if the two are confirmed simultaneously), and even use the act of drawing as an attack once you buy that skill.

Normal is fine. Take your easy mode advice somewhere else!

Kidding.

Huuh, another run for nothing, if it's cause of no recruited enemies...
All civilians, 18minutes but 62000 in combo when it was 80000 in previous run.
If only I knew exactly what I need.

I'd recommend to play on normal if you've played action games before to be honest. The game doesn't even punish you for dying apart from lowering your score (so you won't get stuck), and you probably won't die that much anyway. I feel that easy would have been too easy. Normal felt really... Normal to me.

Most people will struggle with unite morphs I just know it. plus you can change the difficulty mid game so I don't see any disadvantages in doing that first.

Normal is really not THAT hard, guys. I mean, if when you die, you restart instantly. Easy mode you probably don't even get a good handle on the mechanics.

Unless you're like...REALLY casual, play it on Normal.

Just picked up a copy of the game. My local gamestop only had 2 copies of the game shipped to them and both were pre-ordered. Luckily the associate at the store felt bad that everytime i go there they never have what i'm looking to buy, so she gave me someone's preordered copy.

Not cool man.

My local store didn't even put them out then said they didn't have any (it's in the ad ffs).

Now I gotta wait for them to stop being morons, and get it all situated tomorrow.

Holy shit at Wonder-Green's gun name:
Christine Daaé (from Phantom of the Opera). As a musical nerd, and fan of the original novel, that totally made my night.
Some really off-beat references in this game, but I was not expecting that at all.

Oh man, maybe we really need the Prima guide then to know what they ask. Its on amazon, but Im still on the fence for purchasing it.
And i wouldn't worry too much about pure platinum on the final score, you only need normal platinum in all stages to unlock the last character.

OH! Thats what the name means! I thought it was a really cool name and probably a tribute to something, but its good to finally know exactly where it comes.

I appreciate that Wonder-Pink's whip is named after Simon Belmont...
