I'm skeptical that it could work great on RTS but for Mobas is very likely.
If you can do easy circular motions with the WASD pad the controller could be great for fighting games too.

I... wow.

It looks like this was designed EXCLUSIVELY to accommodate keyboard & mouse games, which still make up the overwhelming majority of what's on Steam. It's still a very earnest attempt to solve a very real problem.

But, it looks like I'd have to switch back and forth between this and a standard Xbox controller, one for traditional PC games and the other for games designed around a console interface. It could get confusing.

As an owner of a Novint Falcon, a haptic feedback PC controller, I am curious and excited to see if Valve's controller can replicate the feedback given. If the can come close, this thing will be great.

As far as the design, it looks like they gave the right & left handed functionality a higher priority than an D-Pad or analog stick. This was the only way to make it ambidextrous, unless it was modular and was made able to switch the parts out.

Wow, that looks fantastic. Finally something interesting in the controller department. Boomerang died and Sony are too scared for risk again. MS, don't fix what ain't broke. Glad to see Valve stepping up to the plate.

I am absolutely baffled (well not really) that so many people are wanting this to be another console controller. Those already work on PCs, as do countless other controllers. This looks to be a very interesting middle ground between m/kb and traditional console controllers.

Man, it just looks futuristic. This is what I wanted from Sony or MS. Can't wait to try one out.

Ugliest controller since the boomerang.

You know what? If the left movement input was an analog stick I could see this having potential. Move with the analog, aim with the trackpad.

The best part is the buttons on the handles. When I first saw the ABXY buttons I though it would be horrible to have to lift the left thumb to press it, but with the handle buttons I can do it without removing my thumb from the trackpad and can put secondary, no important functions on X/Y instead.

I'm stunned and skeptical but ... Damn I wanna get my hands on it! As others said, it would be fairly useless to ape the Xbox controller when it's already a PC standard. If it helps translate a kb/m setup into the palm of your hand ... That's fucking awesome. Those are the types of games I want to try if I get into PC gaming, but I want to play them from my couch and I can't figure how I would use kb/m from the couch...

This has the potential to be something truly amazing. Flexible and innovative. Of course assuming the controller actually feels comfortable and the haptic feedback addresses effectively the shortcomings of touch devices. Games specifically designed for this controller could add so much more.

Too bad this thread shows so much resistance to any deviation from the status quo, just because what we have nowadays "already works".

I don't know why valve seems to hate those who purchased and loved his games, and insult with all of this...
Trackpad? have you ever try to use a trackpad to play?
vibration feedback? disable it is the first thing i do in my smarthphones.

SteamOS? nice
Steam Machines? bleh
Steam Pad? No, valve, please, stahp

People who think this is brilliant or horrible without having ever tried it are both being incredibly stupid for the exact same reason.

I... umm.. well.. hmmm.
It looks unique. Will need to get my hands on it before I can judge. It's definitely new. Would like to see how it handles something like DMC or a fighter. Like, an arcade stick is the best for fighters but you can use a normal pad with no problems really. Looks like it might be awkward on that to do some things.

Will have to wait and see it in action.

I don't get it. If those face buttons correspond to the normal ABXY buttons in like a 360 controller, does that mean I have to move my left thumb away from the trackpad just to press Y or X?
The face buttons are there akin to the "start & select" buttons. There are 16 buttons on this thing - 8 of which are able to be pressed without lifting your thumbs.

If people want to use the face buttons for ABXY scenario then they are doing it wrong and it's going to be cumbersome for them.

Wow, that thing looks nothing like anything I'd have ever expected, honestly. What in the actual fuck.

That said, I have no idea how it would feel. Not sure how anyone could make any kind of guess as to how it would work in practice without trying it first. Definitely intrigued and looking forward to giving it a whirl...

I mean if you guys just want another Xbox controller, just plug in an Xbox controller and continue to not be able to play half your PC games well.

One haptic track pad? Okay. Two? Nope, you've lost the plot.

You need a physical stick or set of buttons for movement, unless we all want to control games like SegaSonic Arcade?

Wat? It's not a pair of trackballs, you can use either positional inputs or cumulative inputs depending on the situation.

I see this as a step up from controllers but still a pretty significant step down from kb/m.

The issue here is that the mouse is so effective not just because it's precise but because you're using your whole arm to move it. It is easy to get a grasp of how to use it consistently because you have to, y'know, move your arm quite a bit; when you miss a shot in a game, for example, your mouse was probably off position by an inch or more. In contrast, a stick is likely not even an inch wide so the difference between a hit and a miss is barely perceptible.

looks amazing for shooters if the touchpads work as envisioned.

So they mapped full movement, including running and jumping to left pad? HOW DOES IT ALL WORK???? I'm guessing analog like movement with click to jump?

Also, quite curious how they plan on tackling... well traditional platformer/action games which is all the rage in the indie scene, and that weird button layout doesn't seem great for say, Batman or AssCreed.

If this works or not, who knows, but this controller news is easily the biggest games hardware news of the year, even with all the next gen console news.

Can't wait for beta :O

whoa....trackpads? really?

Not sure how I feel about it, because I love the feel of dual analog sticks in my hands, but I certainly wouldn't mind giving this thing a try and see if it converts me.

I definitely would have to try it before I buy it.

Still no solution for having to take your thumbs off the move/look controls to press buttons. Terrible.

Check again, the pads themselves are clickable as the back buttons and triggers.

Reading is knowledge and that's only half the battle!
The other half is more reading

I would never touch this thing if it didn't have the Valve name attached to it. They need to get these things out ASAP to get control of the messaging.

That's pretty much what you're going to have to do. I'm really doubtful how well the handle buttons work.

Im just curious if you would see this controller and not knowing it was Valve behind it, would you be interested or just sort them out with all them other "new" controllers that no-one ever bought?
