Dragon Quest 1-8 coming to smartphones.

Eh. I still think that especially with DQVIII that has been never ported before they would make more money with 3DS port considering that with 3DS they could charge more. Does anyone know how these will be priced?

It did, it is the best selling DQ ever.

There's an argument being made against DQ on iOS: that it's being sold a lower price, therefore 3DS is better. It's the same argument that could be made for DQ on home consoles x handhelds.

If we look at the price:

DQVIII: 3.55 million units x 9,240 yen = 32.8 billion yen
DQIX: 4.15 million units x 5,980 yen = 24.8 billion yen

If SE is looking only at the price they're selling, why are they still making DQ for handhelds instead of home consoles?

I think the real missing factor in your equation here is budget. While VIII made more overall, did it cost more than IX to make? I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that it probably didn't. I don't know if there's ever been any official word on this, but I wouldn't be surprised if IX made more in the long run because it cost less to make. And this was before HD, which seems to have brought development up a good deal from the talks of some game's budgets.

Don't forget that they scrapped progress on DQ9 initially to completely remake the game, which undoubtedly ballooned the costs quite a bit.

Please, please, oh please at least support gamepads.

I don't think I could stomach paying as much money as Square-Enix will charge to be forced to use virtual sticks.

Do we know what versions 1-7 will be? i.e., will VII be the 3DS remake, VI be the DS remake, and so forth?

Slightly disappointed that this likely means this will be the only way to play VIII portably for a long time. Even for turn based games, I'm not too keen on touch phone gaming.

I think these Dragon Quest on smartphones will be the first time that these games are being ported, instead of being full remakes.

Sad to see DQ series going down this road.

If DQ8 will not be released on Vita also,
I will be a sad, sad little panda.

Please Shahid, throw some monies.

I don't get the touch control complaints. I could understand not wanting to play fast paced action games on touch screens but I don't see how it would matter in turn based RPGS tbh.

Some people just don't like virtual controls.

The first Dragon Quest ports were DQ I and DQ II on MSX actually.
I'd hardly consider the GBC and mobile versions of I-III remakes. I love the GBC games but if anything, they're essentially demakes of the SFC versions. And let's not forget DQ I-III on Wii which is a NES port/compilation. So no, porting is not exactly new to the series.

(also, as much as DQ V and VI for DS are amazing remakes, DQ IV DS is closer to a port of the PS version)

If the ports are good, I'm fully behind this. S-E doesn't have a good track record for ports thus far, though.

And, yes, porting DQ8 to 3DS/Vita and then localizing 7 would be a good idea.

I still dream about DQ8 HD on my PS3 or Vita.
I mean, look at this PS2 emulation screen * sigh *

Instead of this, we'll get smartphone junk...

And Terry's Wonderland, and the upcoming Dragon Quest Monsters 2 remake.

But we won't be getting DQ7, TW, or DQM2 in the US. Nor will we be getting any of these smartphone ports in the US.

SE USA Isn't smart enough to make money with a classic RPG anymore. Frankly, I'm gobsmacked they even tried with the FF remakes on mobile in the US.

Shit, DQ8 deserves an HD remake. And DQ11 is still going to 3DS don't worry. They aren't dropping 3.5-4 million sales for a cheap smartphone game exclusively. Now whether any DQ games on 3DS get localized is another question.

For an RPG series that doesn't involve fast, dynamic inputs?

It's like Aeana and everyone have been saying, virtual dpads when exploring don't really feel so hot. This company doesn't have a great track record of optimizing controls for smartphone ports either.

Well, I love DQ8 so much it's almost unhealthy. So more people playing DQ8 can't be a bad thing.

It's nice to dream

Uh... that does seem the most likely scenario at this point. Unless it will be for tablets and smartphones. Which would make sense. That would make these "test" games to determine the present viability of the franchise on mobile platforms.

Not that SE wouldn't poop out mobile ports of their older titles anyway.

This is getting absurd. I guess this all but confirms FF7 remake on iOS! (; ;)

Nah. if that ever does get made, it's going console- if for no other reason than console gamers will happily pay 30-60 dollars for it.

Good luck trying that with iOS. you'll need literally 5 times as many people buying the game.

Have you seen SE pricing scheme for mobiles?

Last time I checked they where pricing FFV for 15 dorrus.

They can put FFVII on iOS/Android and charge 50 for it.

Hell I even think Scamco placed one of their iOS games for 40 (idolmaster i believe)

As far as visuals go I don't think there'd be that huge a difference between Vita and smartphone, resolution is potentially worse on Vita.

Give me VIII on an iPad for a decent price and I'd be down (still on my backlog, only like 2 hours in, mostly bought the game because it was on sale and had the FFXII demo in it...)

To be fair you really only need an iOS or Android device. So a tablet would work too. Or an iPod Touch.
A tablet would be better than a smartphone.

As you have a bigger surface for seeing and better accuracy for control.
I've tried playing Mega Man on a smartphone. I couldn't get past Gutsman's stage. Not worth the effort.

Gaming on a tablet is an infinitely better option.

I'm surprised they announced them all like this. I don't mind them supporting mobile as long as they keep supporting handhelds.

My main concern with the massive support for mobile, especially in SE's case, is that a lot of it has been based on porting games that have already made their budgets back. As they keep decreasing the amount of console and handheld games they make they will have less opportunities to do this and then what? Have we have had any indication that mobile can support a full, original development up to the standard people expect? FFIV The After Years was seen as an example of SE willing to put more effort in but it's still most reusing assets from a DS game and Tokita expressed concern about the expense of voice over which indicates to me that whilst they may be profiting from these ventures it is because budgets are very low.

If you don't like anything that Square Enix is doing don't buy their games. Vote with your wallet. I know I am , Square used to be my favorite company but they have fallen so far. I'm also canceling my FFXIV account as well because i'm just tired of all the crap from them.

I think they're better off without "fans" that ignore all of their good stuff and get mad when they don't just remake FFIV and VI every year

Tell me about it.
Going to Android and iOS is probably the smartest thing they could do, and would help fund next-gen projects. What a stupid mindset some people have.

Its never gonna happen , we get next gen games here and there but they like to play it safe with only Final Fantasy stuff.

What good stuff?

Off the top of my head: Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2, Theatrhythm, and Rocket Slime DS. DQMJ2 and Rocket Slime both bombed here, which led to us not getting their 3DS installments, and Theatrhythm's sequel may or may not come here. There's been absolutely no word yet.

DQ9 probably underperformed in the West, too, which is why we've yet to see the DQ7 remake or DQ10.

Heck, even Chrono Trigger DS bombed, which was an enhanced port of a beloved non-FF game. I remember Square's vice president at the time saying that he's always asked about Chrono Trigger, but the sales have shown that people don't buy it.

"Why does everyone ask about Chrono Trigger?" he laughed when asked about the game. When he was told that the game was adored by fans, his response was quite blunt: "That's not what the sales tell me!"

Most of those games bombed because Square Enix didn't market them. DQ 9 did well because Nintendo actually gave the game commercials.

DQ8 was the first DQ to be translated into English; and none of those games had a marketing push even remotely comparable to those of their maiine games. What do you expect?
