The benefit of being new and just the enthusiast Nintendo fans who would have bought it no matter what. Its why PS4 and Xbone will do just fine this year, the super hardcore crowd will buy their new PlayStation and/or Xbox toy.

When i say "Nintendo fans" i am not talking about people who at some point in their lives enjoyed a few Nintendo titles and might pick up a Wii U when Zelda/SSB/Mario Kart launch, we are talking people who make hype train pictures for every Nintendo Direct, read Zelda timelines etc. Ie. the super hardcore fan, they have already bought their Wii U.

One thing that is sure and 100% certain: The Wii brand has no sway any longer, from being hottest piece of electronics in 2006-2008, its completely irrelevant today. They could have called their console Banana, Shipwreck or Zimbabwe and it would have done just as "well" as the Wii U has. They will surely drop the brand next next gen.

Not only has the brand lost its meaning, but it's become rather toxic. Mention anything with Wii in it, and some gamers roll their eyes instantly.

Sure it gave the company their most successful console, but it's time to let the brand go.

New model was a nice bump for vita. Now, get some major games out and soon to keep that momentum up.

Also interested to see any sales bump from Vita TV next month.

A lot more people have become aware of this game recently. Its like AA with a touch of Persona. Really good series and glad its doing well.

Still cannot believe Nintendo made that mistake. The Wii name was already losing steam back in 2010, and by 2012 it was known as the system that no one plays anymore.

Shocked by Vita- I actually think it will sell 50,000 next week.

Pokemon as expected.

GTA I expected it do well because of the press it's been getting. But didn't really know the Japanese gamers would react. I'm happy to see these numbers.

If the Vita can keep it up, I'm happy.

Wiiu - Is there a price drop coming ? I hope that it gets a bump after 3d world.

I wouldn't buy it, but I get the point, it's lighter, less bulky and it has colours, those three things are important in Japan.

Of couse, I'm sad that the gorgerous screen is overlooked by the general public, but at the end, that first version goes nowere, and if you appreciate what it does, you can buy it at same price.

I don't think we will see Vita take over 3DS, ever. And doing it at those months with MH4 and Pokémon in shops is craziness, both are games with long tails.

Hopefully the Christmas season will be better for Nintendos home console, sales-wise.

I tend to lurk and rarely post in MC threads but had to drop a comment regarding the low Wii U sales. I know a bundle's coming but what the fuck is up with Nintendo. I hope they have plans in the work internally because they're gonna need to do a lot in order to gain momentum.

I remember when they announced the DS, and we all thought they lost their god damn minds, was suppose to be this "third pillar" or something. Just the idea that they would throw the GameBoy brand out the window was ballsy, and they ended up being right.

So there is something to be said of Nintendo introducing a new brand, they have a good track record of that. GBA did less than GB, 3DS will likely not do DS numbers, SNES did less than NES, so when it comes to direct "sequels" to consoles that try to carry the same brand, there is something to be said of them just starting something new, after all that is how the original Wii came to be, its how DS came to be and i am sure they will do that next time. You wont see Reggie at E3 in 2017 announcing the Wii Tri

A new model with no game selling over 100k for the Vita this week and with Pokemon releasing and it still managed to sell just 5k shy of its post-price cut week. I realise there was probably a lot of pent-up demand but this is a very good number. Now that MH4 craze seems to be easing up the system might have a nice breath of fresh air. It'll certainly stay above 10k until the end of year. We've got Gunman bundle in 2 weeks, then 2 weeks from then it's GE2 bundle and Vita TV launching (once again it's a launch week so there'll be plenty of pent-up demand), then you basically have 2 SKUs for playing Vita games, one at around 10k yen. After that it's holiday season and FF bundle. That should all see Vita out into next year along the same way that the post-price cut strategy saw Vita crusing at around 15-20k till the start of septmber. The big question will be what does Sony have for the Vita between January and the time when SS Delta launches.

Edit: Just saw that the J-Victory stars got dated for March, so that's another big game for the vita. It really needs to fill that January-February period now, and with January being quiet in genereal, February is really the one concern.

Re the revision the revision was meant to cut cost so that the price-cut could happen. Vita had abmyssal sales and so they cut the price in Japan earlier this year to revitilise its sales (and it worked to a certain degree). The original plan was probably to cut the price with the introduction of the new model now. Having said that, A new 5k yen price cut could easily happen for next year's holidays with this new model seeing that it's much cheaper to produce.
Also having that 1GB of storage is pretty big (no need to buy a memory card to play games), it's lighter and smaller which also (apparently) playes very well in the Japanese market.

Yeah. And the fact that they deny that the name has anything to do with the poor sales despite admitting there is confusion that it is a new system. No one would be confused if they called it the Mega Awesome Ultra Wowza Nintendo.

Would a radical change in course change the console's fate? Create a new entry level offering with just the Wii U (no gamepad), a pro-controller, and SM3DW. Cut the price by 10000 yen. Going forward the gamepad would be relegated to the status of being slightly better than Rob the Robot - only a few games really use it, but if you have it, you can still get off-tv play. I'd even throw into the mix changing the name of the console but I think it's too late for that.

As a second question, at what point do they give up on the console and prepare for the next hardware cycle?

I know none of this is stuff that hasn't been said before and apologize for that. A combination of my growing affection for the console and week after week of worrisome sales in Japan prompted me to post.

Unless there's a major release next week, Vita will do 30k tops next week.

As for Wii U, no price-drop (it's already much cheaper in Japan compared to the West), but there's some pretty nifty bundles coming up on Oct. 31st.

Edit: My minor solution to selling Wii Us

Create a Pokemon game and bundle it with several exclusive Pokemon that you can trade into your 3DS games after completing the Wii U game.

Great numbers for Pokemon, the 3DS is rising to heaven and murdering everything else combined.

Wow at Vita-- so that explains the numbers from previous weeks.

I'm not too worried about the Wii U. People are waiting for the bundles.

... Bundles with what? There is basically only 1 new Wii U game that is going to move anything within at least the next 6 months or so.

e: Oh I guess you meant those bundles in 2 weeks. I don't think anybody cares about Wii Fit U or Wii Party U so I don't see it doing a ton.

The optimist in my is hoping that, since pokemon and wiiu target similar demographics (not age), part of the problem is that people obviously won't drop the equivalent of $240 to get 3DS LL and pokemon and then get a wii u the same week, especially with the bundles coming up in two weeks.


The other part of me is just bummed.

The problem is it's an unexciting piece of hardware with some moronic management from Nintendo. High Risk High Reward approach just like with the wii only this time it went the other way...

Saw Creamsugar posting earlier in the thread..wonder if he already has the NPD numbers. It's going to be very important to the wiiu since this is the one that includes the price cut effect if I'm not mistaken

OT: Eating crow on the vita numbers..didn't expect them that high tbh. Gd gd. Let's see where it settles. But iirc there are a bunch of titles releasing for it in the coming two months or so with few bundles and vita tv in the mix. Hopefully it will help keep the sales above 20k for the rest of the year at least

Where's my god damn info on GR2 sony!

Careful with your Vita predictions, I remember it held pretty well after the price cut. Plus, it's almost the holiday season.

For the 3DS list, add Attack Of The Titan, Miku and some others.

Yeah just given the seasonality and amount of things coming out that are of at least some note, I would expect it to not completely collapse until at least January.

I haven't seen Nintendo perform this bad in my lifetime. They must be ashamed in Japan.
