Horrible List. Even if you agree with the bands in the top spots, Meat is Murder is the best Smiths album and Abbey Road the best Beatles album.

About ten years ago they did a greatest British albums of all time and the shitting Stone Roses came first so it shows how ludicrous these lists are.

It's just an excuse for the coked up writers there to piss around and troll people artfully cause there's nothing to write about that week (again).

Where can you even see the full list? The OP's link just takes me to 500-401 and the rest of the list is nowhere to be seen on the website.

That top 10 is atrocious. Where the fuck are Thriller and What's Going On?

Revolver was a good choice though. That and Sgt. Peppers are the best Beatles albums.

Don't know people get so mad about a list. It's not one person's choice, they asked people to vote and this is the aggregated result. Here's the methodology.

As for the list itself, it's a little bit skewed towards recent releases but I don't find it that disagreeable. I would say the top 10 are all classics at least.

I don't like the Smiths, but even if I did I'd be able to admit that they haven't made one of the 10 greatest albums ever, much less the greatest.

Lol, yeah ok bud. It's not like this is some "WTF who let Limp Bizkit on to the top 10 list." It's The Smiths dude

Unsurprisingly a very British list. I'd put the Queen is Dead in my top 5, but not number 1. Revolver would probably be better for number 1. I'm surprised The Strokes and Oasis made the top 10, but Radiohead didn't. Bit annoying.

LOLOL Wait The Strokes who I do love by the way have an album ranked #4 of all time?

This list is clearly put together by some kind of Strokes fanatic.

I would say that The Beatles alone have 10 albums better than Is This It.

I'm not sure why there is such a shock factor for their list. They make it blatantly clear about what sort of music they cater to. This list isn't surprising at all.

I also had no idea that Strokes album is supposed to be that great. I remember it came out in high school but I've always thought it was a flash in the pan thing.

Is This It is certainly worthy of praise considering when it came out and how influential it was to the ensuing decade of guitar rock... but top 10 is a kinda crazy.

Also, Hot Fuss is way too low.

I think it's important to have context here then. I don't really like NME and I myself would never put Queen is Dead at #1, but in the UK The Smiths represent the first really big breakout indie band. To them, every band since them has been built off of their success.

Also, Hot Fuss is way too low.

I think Hot Fuss was a 10/10 when it came out and look at how their opinion has changed.

I hope that 40 years from now, classic rock will be completely forgotten and today's indie rock stuff will be looked at as "oldies". And stuff like Radiohead and The Shins and White Stripes will be on these greatest albums lists, and kids will claim they were born in the wrong generation.

Also, call me old fashioned but I will never understand how can you put Rock and Rap/Hip-Hop albums together in these lists. Their approach to music is completely different and cannot be compared.

what the hell lmao

What? I'm not saying one is better than the other. There's enough similarities to compare Led Zeppelin and Nirvana and The Strokes but it's weird to debate how the latest Kanye West stuff is better/worse than The Doors.

I expected you to have a lot more left-field choices tbh.

I think there's a legitimate debate to be had between Kanye West and The Doors, music is music and if you start cutting out dissimilar genre's then it may be hard to stop.

It's okay to have a "Top 100 Rock" and "Top 100 Rap" list, but mixing those two lists is where shit gets really interesting.

This list is clearly put together by some kind of Strokes fanatic.

It's because after Britpop rock music was finished as a cultural force in the UK. With its circulation plummetting, the NME desperately bet the farm on the "New Rock Revolution" which amounted to a load of largely uninteresting garage rock revivalists (The Datsuns, The Vines, lots of other bands with The in the title) of which the only ones to have any kind of lasting commercial success were The Strokes. I mean it was the early 00's - indie rock music was so fucking boring even an album as lame as 'Is This It' seemed exciting. They were a solid product to sell to the NME's remaining audience of middle class university students. As such their continued inclusion in the NME's pantheon is basically "thanks for preventing us having to close the magazine down."

Also lol at the idea of the NME being respected like it was still 1978 or something.

The Strokes is in the top ten. Nice, nice list :D By the way, I don't think it should be in the top ten, top 20 and I said it will be more fair.

The list is very weird. No top ten for Pink Floyd and yes for Oasis? I do like Oasis, but come on.

We doing this?

10 | Sigur Ros -Agaetis Byrjun
9 | Station to Station -David Bowie
8 | Funeral - Arcade Fire
7 | O.K Computer - Radiohead
6 | Revolver - The Beatles
5 | In The Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
4 | Closer - Joy Division
3 | London Calling - The Clash
2 | Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground
1 | Remain in Light - Talking Heads

Number 10 can be Let it Be - Replacements depending on the day.

Did they seriously organize their list so you have to click 500 fucking times to see the whole thing?

Prefer Strangeways to QID but it's nice Morrissey and Marr are getting the recognition they deserve even if it's from the shitty NME. Basically the list is meaningless in terms of order they're all good albums as long as Random Access Memory isn't in there...oh it is.
