It's bad enough to notice it.

You honestly think the left looks better? Because that's the original:

I couldn't tell the difference until someone pointed it out.
Funny thing is, chromatic abbreviation was common when I used to wear glasses & I didn't mind it at all.

If done right and in a subtle way I don't mind effects that attempt to try and make a period piece look like it was shot with old-timey technology. Just like I don't expect a game to use a perfect white balance for accuracy's sake, I don't need the image to be as sharp as possible if the art direction calls for an effect. Now, it has to be done right. I actually thought a lot of games this current gen have been atrocious with their overuse of grungy, desaturated looks.

A lot more interesting is the aspect ratio in these shots: 2.4:1, like in the movies. I think it looks nice, but would anyone play a game like this, or must all games be 16:9? What about if this was the default, meaning it was all framed for this ratio, but you could go in the options and remove the bars? And finally, what if it ran at a steady 30fps without the bars, but you got a little frame-boost with them on? Would people take to a viewframe like this for the sake of artistic vision?

Props to RAD for being open about their development. While a lot of developers tend to do "making of" videos they often don't show too much of the actual pipeline process this early on. For a while I myself was unsure of what or when to post things during development but I think this format has helped me form a better idea.

Really excited to see the engine at work. Hopefully the technology is from SSM and thus open to others working with them.

The tech is all in-house.

You gave great insight previously in the materials thread.

Anything you can share here regarding the latest screen shots? Any particular element that needs to be improved and is being worked on?

I know you guys have some stuff to hold back but I would love to hear more about the technical side in the future. Even if it means getting some slides like that KZ bunch we got showing CPU utilization and other highly technical things we might not all understand.

Can't wait to see more. I think everyone here is rooting for you guys to make another great game but this time with less limitations in PS4.

These screens look amazing, even looks like a CG film on the vita shots & the CA gives it a nice touch.
I'm getting huge TLOU vibes from this and thats a good thing, if it can be anything like that game then bravo to RAD. Looking forward to this and Second Son.

This is going to be so incredible to see in motion. Soon, I bet.

Giving me real next-gen vibes. Same feeling I got when I saw Gears of War the first time, which is funny since this is also a third person shooter.

Any clue when we will get some gameplay video?

Loved your psp games.

I really want to see the game's destruction stuff in action. There's a lot of neat stuff they mentioned in the GI article and I'd love to see at least some tech demo-ish demonstrations of it.

Yeah, that'd be great to see. It's one of the more intriguing things I've heard about the game so far.

Hnngggggggg this game right here. Sony, you better buy RAD and Geoff Keighley, you better have snagged a gameplay trailer for the VGAs.

Wow @ the updated OP pics. Those character models, the lighting, the ambiance is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Looks amazing.

I was about to comment on that. What's the point of having the pixel quality of 1080p when you're going to make everything blurry by exaggerating the chroma aberration.

Yes, some people can't notice it but then again some people don't notice the difference between HD and SD so it's a moot point, really.

I think it's fair to say there is more than one way to create a visual identity.

Not every game needs to be 1080p (obviously a contentious point at the moment) and adhere to a rule of clinical crispness. These guys are clearly not chasing after that. Mostly on this forum when people say 'photorealistic' it's a misnomer, but here it is not. They are looking to make their game look as if it were captured through a camera lense - mirroring the faults that we've become accustomed to or even enjoy in films.

I will always comfortably refer to Shadow of the Colossus, when talking about IQ and artistic decisions. The HD rerelease of the game offers a superb performance boost, but in it's transition to HD lost some of it's visual identity. It's a great game to use as an example here. Details like colossi fur, no longer look soft as they should revealing instead an SD attempt at parallax mapping, every model's pointy edges are harshly exposed, the horse's tail no longer seems to move organically purely because you can see how it's made up of 4 or 5 physics objects at the new resolution.

People questioning this have the right to. But I personally have a huge amount of faith in a developer that is acutely aware of their visual output and how their assets and renderer function together to make an image, as opposed to one ticking off a myriad useless terminologies on their technical checklist - without employing them to any great effect.

As someone who has worn glasses for well over a decade, I can't say that the CA bothers me :p

Neither do black bars, honestly. I had no problem with Dragon's Dogma.

I think it's cool how they're trying to make the game so "filmic." I don't understand why that's become some kind of curse word lately.

Game looks awesome. Really, really excited for it. If it's releasing in 2014, then it, and inFAMOUS: Second Son, are my two most anticipated games of next year.

I'm amazed that some people don't notice or care about the chromatic aberration. It was the first thing I saw in the Gamersyde pics (THANK you blimblim... you guys rock and we love you!)

It looks so bad and really blurs things out. I wonder what it looks like in motion.

Yeah, except your comparison is way off because it's not a generational difference and we've seen that games look just as good without those visual hacks.

I didn't notice the CA until the side to side comparison was made, so I don't have an issue there. All the filtering and "imperfections" they're doing I think are fine and I can appreciate the "filmic" presentation that they genuinely desire.

On the other hand, I think the black bars are going a bit too far.

Team "I-am-OK-with-chromatic-aberration" checking in.

If the screenshots are representative of what we can expect in the final product (CA included) then sign me the hell up. Looks outstanding.

Because of what it entails. When some guys over here hear that word, they immediately think of a linear, set pieces-ridden game. And for a good reson, I hope that this game can break the rule.

Does anyone know if this will be open world or a hub? linear?
Not open world. From everything they've said, think of as similar to The Last of Us in the size of levels, but somewhat bigger. For example they said there will be times where we investigate things and can explore a little. Think about it similar to this:

Areas where there will be other civilians.

I don't know why, but thinking about Remote Play on any PS4 game just makes the game seem better for me.

BTW, considering many GAFers have an OLED Vita, shouldn't we be worried about a burn-in if there are constant black bars? This is why I don't use my Vita browser at all.

No. On those black bars, the pixels are off. There is absolutely nothing to worry about. Now, if they put the HUD elements in there, then maybe, but no less than any other stationary HUD.

If there is anything that resembles that concept art in this game...

Dear fucking god! This game will be the definition of a system seller. Such a great setting...

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
So what kind of enemies are we facing in this game? Monsters? humans? vampires? The setting makes it look like it could be either or all of those lol
