DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

Pretty much. It's incredible. I personally don't like to have my games look like the screen was smeared with vaseline and I feel like I'm not alone.

you would rather them look like a jaggy pixel crawling mess then??

I'll spell it out for you as you're having a hard time understanding.

PC version:-

Xbox One version:-

PS4 version:-

The Xbox One and PC versions both have the same textures on the arm and the skybox which shows the Xbox One version was built off the PC build.
For some reason they PS4 version is different.

and how many times does it have to be explained that the soldiers camo is RANDOM...sometimes its one...sometimes its the other...

This is what I don't like about the PS4 version.
Not sure what it is, whether the solution to aliasing is causing it or whatever, but the PS4 version looks very blurry - which is why I prefer looking at the Xbone version, which actually has contrast.

again with the contrast...have you watched the videos NOT from digital foundry??

Not a very good one according to DF.
actually they didnt say that at all...they said it was a software scaling issue...which means it didnt use hardware scaling which the PS4 apparently also has..

So tl,dr of this whole thing basically comes out as PS4 version >>> Xbone version?

Basically what anyone with sense was expecting anyways. Talk about a predictable finale.

Kinda feels like people are missing the point here. Regardless of your preference for this particular game (no AA vs a post process filter that adds significant blur), this game gives us a good idea of what to expect in terms of performance difference.
The X1 not being able to keep up in terms of frame-rate even when the PS4 is rendering 50% more pixels and additional effects like AO is pretty significant. We'll see more face-offs soon enough to confirm this but it's weird that people are focusing on the blur filter Dice used on PS4 version (and not on X1 because putting that filter over a 720p image probably would've been nasty) instead of the raw performance numbers this game is providing and that give us a clearer picture of the difference between both systems.

JackFrags, videogamer and IGN do not show the crushed blacks that DF's shows on the XBO

That's what I thought reading the OP, but people in the topic kept talking about the crushed black levels as if it were a thing, so I didn't know if the conclusion had changed since the OP.

Stop inferring shit, Amir0x. You know damn well what you meant :p

Dude maybe I'm too sleepy but I really don't know what you think I was inferring lol

The issue was never whether the PS4 version was better, but how much better it is.

I thought that difference would be bigger. Lack of HBAO, resolution cuts and a worse quality of FXAA is not really that big of difference for 50% difference in CU.

It was quite logical that there wont be 50% performance difference between two platforms and we have first proof.

What?

The PS4 version is running at a higher resolution, a more stable/higher frame rate, has more effects including ambient occlusion, better AA, and probably higher res textures (we need to see direct feed?)

Also the PS4 has "huma/gpgpu" to help it improve in the future, xbox has what? A "bottleneck"? I'm not too advanced on tech knowledge, will a bottleneck help development in the future?

It does not fucking matter if you like the look of the XB1 version more, it is OBJECTIVELY better on the PS4!
It has around an extra one half pixels over the XB1 version, it has effects that the XB1 version is lacking and has correct colour, unlike the XB1 version!

If you don't like it go invent a device that can take you to an alternate universe that has the XB1 as the better version, because it is not fucking true in this universe!

LOL dude. Relax. It's a game. Some people like the look of the xbox version better, some like the ps4.no big deal and I don't see why you are so invested in it.

I've never seen someone so angry over something so trivial. Whether the colours are saturated or whatever, in these small gifs am doing the XB1 looks better to me. If that offends you then you should probably have a salad or something.

The scary thing about this thread is that it suggests that many people are probably very fond of using 'game' mode on their TV, where the brightness/contrast are already turned up considerably high. If you use that mode and add in Xbone's already high contrast/saturated output, you'd get one hell of overly saturated, very crushed black scenes.

Digital Foundry pixel pusher
(and imo you have no credibility to begin with since you started play games with vsync on)
That's the part that has me scratching my head. I value image consistency so that means I'm full of shit? Yeah, OK.

I've never NOT played games with v-sync enabled as tearing absolutely ruins image quality. You prefer the small decrease in latency? It's a matter of preference. Do you prefer better image quality or faster input? It's going to vary per person.

noone plays at 720p on a pc unless they have some 8 year old lcd monitor or play on a laptop
NO SHIT.

That wasn't the point. The idea is to demonstrate how the consoles stack up to the PC versions using the highest level of detail. It's a point of reference. The idea isn't to say "HEY, look how great PCs are", rather, here's what PS3 and 360 are missing in terms of assets and effects.

Wasn't 360 gamma fucked with too? Conditioning people to that seems to be paying off even here. Looks like a joke on the Xbone.

Even if Ps4 version looks better overall (performance, less aliasing) i expected much wider gap reading yesterday comments about Ps4 MP being better than Xbox One SP.

I have to say i0m disappointed by every next gen version, both ps4 and xbox one look pretty bad compared to PC

For all of those who prefer the no aa on xbox, thats cool, I almost do too in a mp setting, but all those dust effects won't be heavy in mp anyway.

I would be worried about never hitting 1080/60 this gen.

I was expecting 720 v 1080 w the same framerate and effects.

As it is now the console which costs 100 less runs the same game at a higher resolution, higher framerate, withmore effects....

It ain't good competition.

More natural lighting, better anti aliasing, higher framerate on average, higher resolution.

*shrug*

I mean Xbox one looks great too, but yeah I'm scratching my head at some of the responses in here.

Me too, to an extent...but then again to a lot of people i can totally understand why some prefer the more gamma/saturation blasted Xbox One images because their eye's are trained and use to that higher sharpness and contrast on their HDTVs.

There are far more people that run their tv with their sharpness at 100 and contrast at 100 than those that have their panel properly calibrated.

PS i think both Xbox One and PS4 look nice...amazed that DF released those comparisons..goofy imho

the difference is...you bothered to actually do some reading...like the OP...every one else?? not so much

This is officially my favorite thread ever. Thank you for getting so angry at my own perceptions.

Subjectively, I like the way the Xbox One version looks over the PS4 version, and if you don't like that, well... Continue to keep getting angry, I guess.

And this is news to you? Most people pick up their TVs and want them to look the same as when they're in display at Walmart.

Oh jeez. The meltdowns are beginning. I suspected this but not so soon.

Seems like xbone has a great upscaler like it did on 360 and ps4 a bad one like the one on ps3, if the games on ps4 aren't 1080p native the only noticeable difference we will see are the aliased images to be more pronounced on the xbone, it definitely looks clear on the xbone, BTW, not buying this game nor the xbone, getting ps4+killzone, never been into battlefield or COD games for some reason, for those that do enjoy this is good because it seems the differences aren't as big as some people were making them out to be

Shit, so this is what all the fuss has been about? The resolution difference is apparent but I can't say that I will care one bit to play the X1 version now that I've seen both.

Keep picking apart the screens to claim Sony superiority GAF, do what you do.

Not a very good one according to DF.

If that is true games will suffer from a bad upscaler with PS4 versions all the generation. This is important to be clarified.

In the IGN comparisson video faces are way clearer in the XB1 version. So, this is not only due to Digital Foundry having messed up the capture options.

Waaaaaaaaaaait a minute....you mean to tell me I can run the M320 launcher AND the health pack now??!?!??

Sorry, haven't been keeping up with BF4 much

Oh...is that why the blurry PS4 images and the crushed black levels of the XBO version?

I'm just trying to get the story straight here, I woke up to this thread lol

Yeah if you watch the Videogamer comparison video you can see the PS4 version has no real issue with blurry image quality. In fact it looks a fair bit better than the XB1 version.

Eurogamer just screwed up with the capture device settings. I made the same mistake when I first posted in this thread after checking out DF.

Wow, this thread is huge. Reading just the last page though makes me somewhat suspicious of how many people have their TVs calibrated.

All console wars aside, someone with decent technical knowledge should make a "Calibrate your TV for dummies" OT. I'm sure many people would learn a lot from it, including me.

OK. I can only view the videogamer comparison vid here in work and bear in mind this is my personal opinion. There's no doubts that the PS4 has better AA thats as clear as day even to me. The Xbox 1 version has jagies and shimmering visible especially on the pylon scene which is no great surprise running at the low resolution. However it also seems to have clearer textures and clearer image (if that makes sense). To be honest for me difference between the two (in terms of visuals) is pretty marginal, although if I was getting BF4 i'd opt for the PS4 version.
