The Mega Drive turned 25. That rhymed.

It can't be that old! I'm that old and I got it when I was 8.

I was a sophmore in high school when this thing was released. I feel old.

It was this and SMB3 that we were playing and importing at the time. That little interstitial time (liminal) till TG-16 and then the mighty SFC came was magical. Some really shitty games like Altered Beast and but many others like Herzog Zwei and PSII which were never equaled.

I was an SNES guy but I loved the Genesis. All the sonic games were top notch. Better look and color too.

Happy Birthday MD!!!

I just love my JPN MegaDrive, the crimson red and massive '16-BIT' logo!!

Holy shit that's the one that I had in South Korea. Brings back so many memories... Sonic 3 ftfw.

Great console. I got the mega cd later on which sadly got stolen from my house while I was out with my parents.

Ah, my first console ever! Sonic 2 was how I got my start in the hobby as a little kid. Christ . . . Sega Genesis, good memories.

Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star III, Sonic 1 and 2, Golden Axe, TMNT: Hyperstone Heist, Shadow Dancer, Contra: Hard Corps -- all total classics.

I did end up selling mine in '91 to fund a SNES purchase, but '90-'91 were great thank to my Genesis/Mega Drive, after the NES was starting to show its age. Hell, for some reason I even like the Mega Drive port of Strider better than the arcade version because of the faster-feeling sword, the weirdly helpful slowdown, and the ability to stand on narrower spaces than the less-forgiving arcade game. And the sound chip's synthy timber actually sounded awesome playing Strider's soundtrack, especially this song:

I was there day 1. Good god I played the shit out of the Genesis. So many fantastic games and memories to choose from. I miss the Sega of yesteryear, they were incredibly aggressive and passionate, so much variety. /salute

Not my favorite Sega console but surely the best.

Same here at the end of the day. Dreamcast was simply magical for me. However this is a Genesis thread, and Genesis is also, waaayyy up there for me. Sonic 2 and my Genesis was literally all I had --gaming wise-- for maybe 2-3 years at one point. Got the job done, lol.

PAULINK

I microwave steaks.
I still need to get a model 1, all I have is a modded nomad (great device but I realized I dont want to hold that thing all the time while playing).

One of my most memorable consoles growing up in the nineties. I really miss the time when the Mega Drive was the most "awesome" toy one could own. Sega's hardware will always be missed by me.

For his very special day I freed my dusty old chap from his dark exil - humhum, I should play Shining in the Darkness again

Long live!

II forever.
Where the fuck you plug your headphones in, motherfucker?

FUCK. You reminded me. Music's so good though.

But then other parts like the Harley fight where the crane is swinging between background and foreground were fucking amazing.

I need to play this again.
Fun fact: Composer is Jesper Kyd, who also did the music for Sub-Terrania as well as the Hitman and Assassin's Creed series'.

Listening to this stuff now, I completely forgot how good the bottom-end was on that Yammy synth chip. Gawd damn.

Wish I knew where my MD was. And the cables to plug it in. Know damn well where my copy of Virtua Racing is, though!

Happy birthday, you glorious piece of electronic wizardry. I don't think I'll ever be as fond of a console as you <3

I have always been confused why it was called the genesis in America.

"Guys we need to name our second system, so I was thinking Genesis!"

The Mega Drive was the second system I owned. It was awesome. Toejam and Earl is still the funkiest game ever made.

Although I will say both controllers I had broke during the systems life. The d-pad on one went and the C button on another. Only way to fix it was too jam some paper tissue behind them that somehow helped them make connections easier. Don't think I've ever had another system have official controllers break.

I have very fond memories of my Mega Drive.

My first was a Japanese one that we bought off a family friend who was selling it as he had just bought a Famicom.

This, plus the NES and SNES, are the greatest consoles ever for me. I got tons of MegaDrive/Genesis, Sega CD, and 32X games. I absolutely adore the system and everything about it. I still play and collect games for it regularly, and that's never going to change. I actually just recently started to import games, so now my collection options are even bigger!

Long live Sega!

Oh the joy when I sold my Master System for the price of just released Mega Drive. I hope the kid who's dad I sold it to enjoyed it for christmas.

I have been meaning to play some of my games, but I can't find the wire to tv. I have to order one from somewhere. I have a PAL MD1.

Was suprised that Rings of Power was a Naughty Dog game when I looked it up one day. Damn it was a hard game fror a kid who was just learning english.

My favorite system ever! I only need Eliminate Down to complete my collection of rare import titles for the system, but I think that may never happen seeing how much the price of the game has skyrocketed.

First console I ever bought with my own money. I must have got it back in 1992 because I remember taking it with me on holiday with my grandparents that summer.

The games that really stick out for me are The Immortal and Road Rash.

I took a quick and dirty photo of my mega drive with some of my faves last night.. I'm in the middle of reorganizing my game room so this is the best tribute i could give to it for now.

Happy Birthday, old friend.

While not my first system ever (that honor goes to the Atari 2600 that my dad bought the family in 1980), the Genesis was the first system that I bought for myself with my own money (I had a paper route in Middle School).

Yeah, still my favorite all time system.

Oh ho!! I see Rocket Knight Adventures!

It's on my list, that makes you an awesome person.

It's not known the exact reason, but I doubt it was something so vapid. It's probably the same reason it usually is for renames like these: copyright and legal issues. Somebody was already using a similar name in America, and Sega changed it so they wouldn't be sued.

I still feel bad about selling my Genesis and games (along with NES) to help fund my N64. First and last time I sold off my consoles. Maybe I'll hit up a lil shop and pick one up for the occasion and restore that gap in my collection.

That means it's Ranger X time, with a helping dose of Pulseman. And Gaiares! And Battle Mania Daiginjou!!

Right on my friend. Thats my namesake. Absoloutly fantastic game. Yeah the megadrive was a huge console for me. Golden axe, Streets of rage, Chakan the forever man, Street fighter 2, Dynamite heady and obviously the Sonic trilogy hold so much happy memories for me. It was a magical time. Just as an aside i'm glad it was called the Megadrive here in Europe( and i think all over the world apart from north America?) , its such a gaming console name. Genesis is an awful name.

It might not be the reason, but there was a company called Supra that released a hard drive called the Megadrive ST for the Atari ST in 1988 according to this: http://www.atarimagazines.com/v7n1/stproducts.html, so this product existing probably would prevent Sega from using the Mega Drive name.

DAT quarter century of memories

Saw Genesis running in TRU Sept. 1989.

$189.99 and ten bucks less than TurboGrafx-16.

Got mine early the following year

Which was still well over a year before Sonic came out.

Reporting for duty! In costume no less.

Love the system. It's honestly a tossup between this and the Dreamcast for all time favorite system. Although if I had to pick one right now, it'd be genny, since I've been doing a lot to try and round out my library of games. :D

Thinking about it now, I actually have a fairly clear memory of picking it out as a Christmas present. I remember the store (Target in Australia), looking at the SNES and thinking "Megadrive comes with Sonic, as well as mail-aways for Columns and Alex Kidd... good deal!" (and maybe Golden Axe? I don't think so though). Was about $300 IIRC, or thereabouts. I remember being so damn excited waiting for the redemption games, but I was still stoked just to be able to play Sonic. At the end of the first week, my parents were already annoyed by the Green Hill Zone theme :D

T'was my first console, and until the first Xbox was the only console I'd owned from new. Still have fond memories of the thing, and never once do I recall being disappointed with it. Should dig the old girl out again... if I can find it! I'd also bought a second-hand MDII and MCDII since as well, but no idea where those are, either. Do know where my copies of MKCD and Sonic CD are, though :)

Love you, Megadrive <3

Awesome console. I missed mine from the old days so much that I bought a NOS boxed generation 1 from Japan. It cost ... a bit.

I play Ristar more than anything else, closely followed by MUSHA Aleste.
