I suspect a lot of people on GAF specifically primarily use a game console for streaming media, and had an expectation that the media capabilities of the next consoles would at least match what was done in the current gen consoles.

I fall into that category. Thank god I held onto my PS3.

The outcry over the lack of MP3 playback on the PS4 is baffling. In 6 years I think I played an MP3 once using the PS3.

Let's face it: the amount of people who used their PS3 as a MP3 player or DNLA device must be so negligible that they decided to scrape it. Remember that there are licenses involved to media playing capabilities and the cost might interfere with the pricing strategy.

There are much more capable media devices out there for a fraction of the price.

Don't really give two shits about background music or DLNA support. At least Sony are being honest about it though.

Will users be able to connect an external hard drive to expand storage on PS4?
No, this feature is not supported on PS4.

So, can I not connect the external hard drives, with all my HD Movies backed up on it, and hook it up to my PS4 and play them?

Does this mean we cannot play any video files that are on external hard drives or usb flash drives? I mean, USB Flash Drives have to work since you can update the PS4 with the Day 1 Update via USB.

I think the questions and answer are worded wrong. You would have to be able to play video files from external devices, right? I think they are referring to game installs and stuff, being saved on an external device, like the Xbox.

You're wrong, it's 9.5mm :)

Um, I wasnt saying the ps4 drive is NOT 9.5 I linked to the drive I bought in hopes to use it, and it appears to be 10mm, and was hoping that the 12mm the german site referenced was correct and that this one isnt.

I was not saying that the size listed in this press release was not 9.5...

ahhhhhhhhhhhem

Cant play mp3s

Cant use media server

Cant change psn ID

Cant even make your sub account into a master once they reach 18.

These 4 things have annoyed me the most...

I think the reason for the outcry is because we are going to be able to play music now WHILE playing the games. I was going to finally load up my PS4 with music/podcasts etc to play instead of having to use another device. Disappointing.

So is the DLNA part.

Have they STILL not announced the framerate and resolution of the 15 minute game recordings? I'm starting to get worried about how dodgy they are being about it.

Don't want to make a big deal about this but this system does less out of the box than PS3. Combine this with the launch lineup and pre order is about to get cancelled. Maybe in a year it will be worth it.

Wow. With the PS3 they removing features over the life of the console. It's almost like they decided to start with the bare essentials on the PS4 so they can claim they're always adding things in.

Collectively, GAF Sony fans are coming to the crippling realization that they are a corporation seeking profit, just like Microsoft. That strange moment when you realize that Sony isn't your best friend....

Or that totally expected moment when you realise that Sony's 1st priority is to get the console to be FUNCTIONAL at launch, and then work on secondary services when they are sure that people can play games fine.

I full expected a lot of features to be missing, although MP3 playback is a weird one. They need to fix before end of 2014:
- MP3 playback
- DLNA
- Twitch archiving
- Youtube uploading
- helping friend by taking control over his game stream
- Suspend/resume
- External storage support
- Ability to have two "primary" consoles < PHLEEASEEE

Can multiple users make use of the automatic Trophy sync and Push Download services?
No.

Will PS3 peripherals such as fighting sticks and steering wheels work with PS4?
Generally speaking, no. However, at launch, users will be able to use these controllers if a specific game title allows it to be used within the game. This decision is upon the game developer and will vary from game to game.

Can I archive my livestreams on Ustream or Twitch?
At this time, livestreams will not be archived for further viewing on Ustream. Users can archive their livestreams on Twitch by presetting via PC. Please follow PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation.com for news regarding PS4’s video services following launch.

Just read about not being able to change a sub account into a master account. That's bull.

Now I'm unsure if I want to create a new account or use my old one. *sigh*

If they are going to whore out Music Unlimited like this, they better have another 12/year deal at launch or very soon after. No one is going to subscribe to it otherwise.

The media stuff is not a big deal to me, but I understand the frustration.

Most people have other devices for streaming media at this point anyways.

Well, yes and no, I've got PLEX on my TV, but still use the PS3 as extender when using my projector. Well the PS3 isn't going anywhere, but was hoping to have a quieter device than the launch PS3.
And all the HDMI ports on my receiver will be full when the PS4 arrives.

WTF so many features that were in PS3 are gone in PS4!!!

Playing mp3s - gone
visualizer - gone
External HDD usage - gone?
DLNA - gone!!!!!!!!!!!! (I use this feature on PS3 all the time)
Themes - gone

I hope these get added later on with firmware updates.

Someone tweet Shu for some answers on these stupid decisions and if they will consider adding them later.

I'm disappointed in some of these things (like dynamic themes, mp3, dlna, headsets) but it's all software based issues. As long as they patch these things in after launch I'll be happy.

I think it might mean that you can't start saving games or downloaded games to an external drive, but I'm sure you can use a thumb drive to put stuff on the machine.

Also, I know people are upset about the DLNA and non-MP3 players stuff, but I find the fact that STANDARD Bluetooth headsets won't work with the PS4. How is that even possible? The only other devices that ever did this were old Verizon phones that prevented certain data from being transferred over Bluetooth, but even then it didn't prevent fucking STANDARD Bluetooth headsets from works. Is the Bluetooth antenna not fucking on? What is the deal?

Not one mention of Gaikai any where. I would imagine they would mention it in streaming, backwards compatability, or during cloud references. They did define other features and specify they are not avaliable at launch...

It's mentioned in the Remote Play section.

Couldn't care less about DLNA, because I always just put my movies on a USB drive to play them on my console. So I want to know if it will still have mp4 playback.

Which PS4 features will be available at launch in North America?

The majority of new features that have been announced will be available when PS4 launches. These features include background downloads, cross-game voice chat, transitioning to a network based on real-world friends, and live streaming gameplay footage via Ustream and Twitch. Additional PS4 features will be rolled out in phases – please read full details on what’s available following system software update 1.5, and follow PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation.com for further news.

What is this DLNA and why should I be angry that I won't be able to use it? Will this stop Netflix, Amazon or Hulu from playing on my box?

...Why do people care about MP3's on the PS4? Don't you want to listen to the game sound?

I've never used any mp4's on my PS3 and I've had it since 2007.

For multi-player games like fighters and shooters, many people don't need to listen to the game audio. I was just watching a fighting game stream where they played their own music on the 360. I would like to have the option, as well. It shouldn't be that hard to implement, so it's kind of funny, actually. They're trying to get more people into Music Unlimited from the looks of it. I would assume they're going to patch most of this down the line, like wallpapers.

I use stuff like DLNA all the time for adding music and stuff wirelessly. I hope that is definitely patched in.

Their answer to USB sounds like it won't even support it for media... although with no MP3 support and probably removed MP4 playback as well, what media would you be storing on here to begin with?

Why does Sony always, and I do mean always, fuck up on the little things? No external HDD's, Media Servers, wireless headsets (which was known) is a big deal for me.

Not as bad as no party system in BF4 on PS3, but close.

Man, that Music Unlimited app is a trainwreck on iPhone. I downloaded it to see if I could do a free trial. Nope, upon opening I was prompted to enter my PSN id and password. I tried doing that and it tells me I need a subscription. No link or button to get a trial or to even purchase a subscription. Uninstalled.

Makes me wonder if Ustream\twitch doesn't want to have to store all those videos from the millions of new potential users.

LOL okay.

Only thing that matters at launch is that it plays next gen games and doesn't brick. Most people have other devices for streaming media at this point anyways.

What's up with the excuses and arrogant 'lol okay'?
Maybe he doesn't want to use other devices?
There are many legitimate reasons for wanting a single device from clutter to space, not to mention losing feature sets we've had in older devices. Then to top it off you have Sony pulling this nickle and dime BS after acting like the saviour of consumer rights for the past six or so months. It's no wonder people are understandably pissed off. Just because you don't have a problem, it doesn't mean one doesn't exist.

The problem with Music Unlimited is that it's a really bad service. By far the worst of the music uploading/streaming services. If it wasn't utter shit compared to the competition, then I'd consider switching to it, but I'm not paying for bad example of a service I already pay for just for music on one device.

No MP3 support and no DNLA support is simply bullshit. Even a feature phone from 10 years ago can play MP3s, and that's the only thing that wife actually uses the PS3 for, since it is connected to our sound system. There is no excuse for a lack of MP3 playblack in 2013. We are not in the 20th century anymore.

I also don't understand the lack os PS1 emulation, considering that almost any device under the sun can emulate PS1 games. That would mean that my whole digital library of PS1 games would go down the drain, contrary to actual industry normas where you simply purchase a device, and any content you purchase on it apps store would actually work on all the devices from the same family like iOS (iPod, iPhone and iPad), or Android (Phones, Tablets, Phablets, etc). I would have understood a note about not being available at launch, but they don't even commit to support it in the future according to the FAQ.
