The music issue is total crap, but they add insult to injury by allowing background music only through their own service. Fuck you Sony. I already subscribe to a service I'm happy with and I have a library of music I wish to play. I don't want music unlimited- so don't insult my intelligence by blocking the features I want to use.

Also, there is no reason on earth why media streaming is not supported. It's not like you have a better alternative. You were going so well until you did this shit.

Yeah, that really is a dick move. If this is the idea both MS and Sony are going to have, they aren't getting a dime out of me. I'm not buying into any of this shit.

hmmmm.. so is it just MP3 missing, or AAC/MP4 as well?

TO TWITTER!!!

edit - tweeted yosp to see if there is at least MP4/AAC/WAV in there.

Sony decided to stub their toe at the finish line. I mean, they're still ahead but stripping away basic PS3 functionality is just ugh news.

Streaming content to the PS3 is easy and bloody useful, less easy with the 360 but it still bloody worked.

Annoying, not a deal breaker, but bloody annoying.

Your wrong. It's a deal breaker.

That's not the point. They are gimping the system going BACKWARDS from last gen just to try to squeeze money out of us for Music Unlimited. It's bullshit and anti consumer.

Yeah, I agree. Both Sony and MS were destined to push their own services. Give it six months and the MP3 will return.

The biggest omission at launch for me is the dynamic themes. MP3 is big too but come the fuck on. Really? No changeable themes? A purely cosmetic feature that would have taken you all of 3 days to code into the UI.

First off, how do you know it would only take 3 days? Are you a programmer who has extensive familiarity with the PS4 OS code?

Second, even if it did take 3 days, that's 3 days they could otherwise be spending on a more important feature. A lot of the missing features people are complaining about are probably less about deliberate omission and more about triage. Custom themes are a nice-to-have on a games console but not as important as party chat and other online play features. MP3 playback is similarly nice but not as important as music unlimited support, as that's a subscription service that makes Sony money.

If they're still not in 1-2 years from now I'd be bitching too. For day 1, though, I'd prefer that they prioritize stability and core gaming-related functions.

Is it possible to output all game audio through DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s 3.5mm headset jack?
Yes, you can select the Output to Headsets option to either ‘Chat Audio’ or “All Audio.”

The no DLNA/Media Player thing shouldn't be bugging me as much as it is. I have several other media players (WDTV Live, 360, etc), but I really wanted an all in one.

The fact that it can't play it even if it's hooked up to a USB is astounding.

Why would they let us play these files off a flash drive when we can't stream them through a network?
I'm betting the answer is no.
If it's not purchased from the PlayStation Store or accessed through Music Unlimited, we're shit out of luck.

Collectively, GAF Sony fans are coming to the crippling realization that they are a corporation seeking profit, just like Microsoft. That strange moment when you realize that Sony isn't your best friend....

yeah, that caught my eye aswell, hope people haven't ordered 12.5mm ones already.

The german article said that Sony changed the fitting bay after first saying it would be 9.5mm, so I'm not quite convinced yet that this isn't miscommunication. Luckily, my 1TB drive waiting is a 9.5mm, but I feel bad for others that might have ordered based on incorrect information.

I really really hope they confirm that they're still working on those missing function for future firmware.

I can understand if some feature is not making it in due to time as long as it's coming.

The lack of DLNA is terrible. MP3s I can live with, but it still sucks.

Any mention of support for video file playback and supported formats?
Anything from Video Unlimited, Netflix, and other streaming services. Without USB storage support and DLNA support you can't transfer any of your files over to the system.

...Why do people care about MP3's on the PS4? Don't you want to listen to the game sound?

I've never used any mp4's on my PS3 and I've had it since 2007.

LOL okay.

Only thing that matters at launch is that it plays next gen games and doesn't brick. Most people have other devices for streaming media at this point anyways.

Exactly. I would much prefer an operational network and games that did not crash than features that can easily be patched in within a couple months. This is the Day One roller coaster, I'm excited to see how it evolves.

I'm being a touch dramatic, but my PS3 is the centrepiece of my media centre. I stream everything to it. I don't have cable and stream from a laptop to the TV. Lack of streaming seriously screws me.

I have a PS3 so I mean I can still use that, but come the fuck on.

Same. It's definitely headscratching but fortunately I have many other devices that support DLNA (including my TV). I'd be extremely surprised if they don't patch it in at a later date.

Definitely nothing that's a dealbreaker, though.

honestly if you play games with licensed music like need for speed, having custom music is about equally as important as having the game. that's how bad the music is in those games. this is fucking ridiculous.

Not buying it for what it can do at launch. Buying it for what i´ll get out of it over time.

Or, maybe they just didn't have time to code DLNA/media server support into the OS for launch.

It's not something simple like copy/paste code from ps3 into ps4 guys.

Will PS3 peripherals such as fighting sticks and steering wheels work with PS4?
Generally speaking, no. However, at launch, users will be able to use these controllers if a specific game title allows it to be used within the game. This decision is upon the game developer and will vary from game to game.

You better keep Logitech wheel support Polyphony or there is going to be hell to pay! Glad to see it isn't a "hard" no though. Keeps my hopes alive that my G27 will work with GT7 or whatever the hell it ends up being.

The share button is very disappointing for me. Why can't I copy my videos and screenshots to a PC or MAC? This was one of the features I was looking forward to the most. Please change this, Sony.

They say very clearly in the FAQ that this will be changed, in a future update.

Haven't read through it as I'm at work right now but is there anything about video activations? You can have multiple activations for PS3 games but only 1 for video. Will we get another activation so we can still buy/rent movies on PS3 and PS4?

The music situationis incredibly dumb. Glad I don't listen to music while playing games or else this would bug the hell out of me.

Most people have other devices for streaming media at this point anyways.

I suspect a lot of people on GAF specifically primarily use a game console for streaming media, and had an expectation that the media capabilities of the next consoles would at least match what was done in the current gen consoles.

I tweeted. We'll see. No MP3 wouldn't mean shit for me (I mean really... MP3...)

No AAC/MP4 would be pretty bad, though still wouldn't affect me (hey, I lived this entire gen with no background music player on PS3, lol). Just trying to confirm that Music Unlimited isn't the ONLY audio choice on PS4.. I mean that would be pretty questionable from a company who has otherwise so far done very little wrong.

Can't change a sub account into a master?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

does anyone know if there are any things that a sub account can't do? I would rather not have to make a new account.

For a company that was seemingly making one good decision after another, there are some seriously fucked up head-scratchers here.

I don't understand that part?

You're at the mercy of whatever is in the Music Unlimited library. Non-Western music is poorly represented on most digital services like Rdio. Perfume's one of the biggest pop bands in Japan and it's nowhere to be found on Music Unlimited, for example.

Not buying Music Unlimited, Sony. But I do want to have my custom soundtracks, horns, goal songs, etc. for NHL. So it better be patched in.

As for the other media functions, it's not too bad. I'd rather they focused on a game console than trying to beat my Apple TV/Wii U/PS3/360 and fail at it by bringing nothing new and only stuff I can already do on other devices.

Basically they don't want their system being used as a machine to watch content downloaded off torrets. Never mind the fact that there's plenty of legal stuff downloadable that we may own from another service and would like to watch on the system. Ugh this is terrible.
