I have Music Unlimited when it was on sale for $12 for a year.
I definitely would not resubscribe at full price.

No mp3, or DNLA support is dumb.
Also, where's Minecraft? I thought it was launch!

Yup, I would resubscribe for $12, maybe even $20, but not a cent more.

I'm presuming the problem you have with my post is that it sounds like I'm putting that before gaming. Not so. If its a GAMING console then yeah, the first thing that should work are the games. Afterwards though, something as simple as music/video playback file-types should be REALLY EASY to make work, and thus the very next thing you should be doing.

This doesn't affect me because I don't listen to music while gaming. However you would assume a minor feature like this would be included but what can you do, not that big of a deal anyhow.

I don't care much for the service either but it's the principle of it and it's wrong IMO.

Edit: you want people to use your service, offer incentives but don't pull this shit

What PS4 software features have been announced, but won’t be available at launch in North America?
Below is an overview of certain features that have been announced that will not be available when PS4 launches in North America.

Pulse Wireless Stereo Headset Elite Edition

Will PS4 support custom Dynamic Themes, as currently available on the PS3 system?
No, PS4 will not support Dynamic Themes as they currently exist on the PS3 system.

Will PS4 support media servers or DLNA support in order to stream videos or movies from a home PC?
The PS4 system does not support client functionality for media servers.

Well, shit!

So suspend and resume won't be there day one...

The wording in this FAQ is actually a bit better than what they said previously. Here they're saying 'across games'. So maybe it will work for the current game, ala Vita.

Though it's not explicit that it will work across transitions in and out of the low power state, which is another question mark their previous comment raised.

This makes no sense.

The price will still be the same. You will be enjoying games earlier.

Why wait? You can still enjoy these adjunct feature when it comes.

I think a lot of it has to do with having a giant backlog to get through still along with not being excited by the launch titles.

But on principle, I don't like rewarding things like this.

I think many would agree this is Sony's biggest fuck up so far. they may very well add all this stuff back in later but the fact they have had it up and running on the PS3 for years and now, all of a sudden, it's just gone is baffling to me.

Just realized, if the PS4 web browser supports HTML5 audio and video, we might be able to do decent network streaming; the web browser runs in the background, right? Fingers crossed. :/

I'm sure it'll be suspended when not in focus. We need to get Boyes on the line. Or tell Mort to tell Sony to read through this thread.

Can users copy the recorded gameplay video from PS4 to other devices, such as PC?

PS4 users will not be able to directly copy recorded gameplay video files from PS4 to other devices, though they will be able to use the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s Share button to upload videos to Facebook for distribution. This function will be supported by a future system update.
Hope that means they will allow in the future.
And what about image export?? Like PSVita.

Kind of an odd way to answer the questions with a simple "No" not "No, but we are working to make it available in the future"

bizarre.

People don't buy new consoles for MP3 support. You guys are overblowing this.

Moreover, Sony can add this feature later. They have bigger fish to fry right now.

Really off-putting that there's no mp3 or media server functionality :/
I hoped that Ps4 would have better media capabilities than Ps3 and allow mkv playback. Maybe someday with a patch then..

"playing" dumb? unpossible
No DLNA and MP3 support? WTF Sony?! Someone needs to ask Shu about this. If it's features that couldn't make it at launch, and they plan on adding them in, I'm sorta ok with it. But no support ever? Fuck off.

For people who capture footage for YT channels and such, I found these all very interesting.

Does PS4 support external HDMI-based game capture devices?
PS4 will allow the use of external HDMI-based capture devices following an upcoming system software update — please follow PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation.com for news following the launch of PS4.

Can I share my game videos on YouTube?
No. At launch, PS4 users will be able to use the Share button on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller to upload gameplay videos to their Facebook account, or to stream live gameplay to Ustream or Twitch. PS4 owners can follow PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation.com for further news on other services to come after launch.

PS4 users will not be able to directly copy recorded gameplay video files from PS4 to other devices, though they will be able to use the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s Share button to upload videos to Facebook for distribution. This function will be supported by a future system update.

So in order to use the gameplay captured with the PS4 capture feature you have to upload to Facebook then rip it from there...

Also no external HDMI capture at launch really sucks.

The game OS and runtime environment has been under constant development so when is 'after'? :) It's not like the 'game console' side of the software was finished for months.

Better to put your resources into that than into other things and come up short on the game runtime environment...

(That said, yes, MP3 support would be a basic thing, but this sounds like a business decision to push MU subs. Which sucks. But it can change)

Codec support for this stuff is likely already there for game developers to use since some games will kind of need to playback audio and video files. They may use different formats of course, but swapping the specific codec used isn't as difficult as the infrastructure around it.

Sony just didn't implement it on the OS level for the end-user.

No streaming content from a computer really, really, really sucks for me. I seriously use that at least a few times every week on my PS3.

I wasn't planning on getting rid of my PS3, but I had wanted to move all of my media functionality over to the PS4. Urgh.

DLNA support is really needed. I use PS3 Media Server all the time on my PS3. I'd like to be able to use that to access my media and play that in the background of my games, if I choose to. Tweeting @yosp about this stuff now.

I've tweeted @YOSP

@yosp Will PS4 get DNLA support in the future? Many unhappy people on the news of no DNLA. What about mp3 - I dont listen to English music?

see what he says

External drives have more storage. This is FAR more important than any useless media features like music streaming.

Seems like Sony don't think running these giant PS4 games from an external hard drive across a USB connection is a good idea.

Because they aren't. I appreciate the honesty but evidently a really simple No to something like DLNA support or MP3 playback still leads people to think they plan on supporting it in the future. Even though they just said No.

Well there are lots of WTF aspects here, actually. No MP3? No themes? Etc...

I'm pretty sure / hope that many features will be improved / added with future firmware updates though. PSP, PS3 and Vita all started with poor system software too, after all.

No I have a dumb TV, I've been using my PC via second screen but wanted a standalone box and I was ripping everything in anticipation of new console
You can still use your PS3 for this, right? No other devices that handle media? If no for both, then that's shitty yeah, I feel for you man.

Can developers launch media apps on PS4 with self publishing, what are the chances of Plex coming to PS4?

If Plex are allowed on the PS4, I'm sure they would be there, they are quite aggressive in their client ports with clients on Samsung SmartTV platforms (TVs etc), LG, iOS, Android, Win8, a bunch of NAS boxes and web.

It looks like they're ceding that market to the Rokus and AppleTVs. Strange.

I remember people did that before DLNA was supported on PS3, so yeah, you'd think it should be possible. If your PC side software supports that, exposing your library through a local network web interface.

Both of these consoles really were not ready to launch this year. There's going to be so much stuff missing from PS4 on day 1 and while I don't really care about it that much since I'm all about the games, I feel for many of you.

One look at the Japanese launch told me that for the PS4. We're being used as guinea pigs and free money because BLACK FRIDAY and Christmas sales are too good for Sony/MS to pass up.
