They're excluding some odd things from the system. From the wallpapers to all this in the FAQ. I'm hoping they come eventually through updates, but who knows.

I fall into that category. Thank god I held onto my PS3.
I do as well... but plan to move my PS3 to another area of the house once the PS4 releases AND I had hoped that the PS4 would have better media streaming through DLNA than the PS3. Instead it has no DLNA. Total 100% undisputed BULLSHIT.

While I am still upset by the no dlna, I can only hope they patch it in. Once I got my GTV, I stopped streaming from my PS3. Not playing mp3's, still hurts. Those should be very basic things that should have been included with the very first code check-in.

No MP3 support and no DNLA support is simply bullshit. Even a feature phone from 10 years ago can play MP3s, and that's the only thing that wife actually uses the PS3 for, since it is connected to our sound system. There is no excuse for a lack of MP3 playblack in 2013. We are not in the 20th century anymore.

I also don't understand the lack os PS1 emulation, considering that almost any device under the sun can emulate PS1 games. That would mean that my whole digital library of PS1 games would go down the drain, contrary to actual industry normas where you simply purchase a device, and any content you purchase on it apps store would actually work on all the devices from the same family like iOS (iPod, iPhone and iPad), or Android (Phones, Tablets, Phablets, etc). I would have understood a note about not being available at launch, but they don't even commit to support it in the future according to the FAQ.
Oh this is actually pretty easy, they probably didn't have time to write a new PS1 emulator.

No external storage means no MP3 support. They will patch all of that in, including DLNA. All of those are IMO secondary features, not really crucial on a launch.

What is this DLNA and why should I be angry that I won't be able to use it? Will this stop Netflix, Amazon or Hulu from playing on my box?

you can't stream your own content to the device wirelessly using media server (i.e. your computer and software like ps3 media server) and output it to your TV. it wouldn't be THAT bad if they at least supported external hard drives...but they said that is not supposed either.

Does anyone know if there are any things that a sub account can't do on the PS4? I would rather not have to make a new account just to get online.

Couldn't care less about DLNA, because I always just put my movies on a USB drive to play them on my console. So I want to know if it will still have mp4 playback.

It's not clear, but it doesn't sound like it.

I think a big reason a lot of people are disappointed are all these things were available at PS3's launch.

That is odd but i hope it makes it to the U.S.

Every picture shows it with the stand and it is not available?

found this on the FAQ - BOLD

What accessories will be available at launch for PS4?
In addition to the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller and PlayStation Camera, North American accessories available at launch will include the PS4 vertical stand ($14.00 MSRP), which enable owners gamers to securely place the PS4 system in the vertical position, and the DUALSHOCK 4 charging cradle ($29.99 MSRP), which enables two controllers to be charged away from the PS4 system.

Entitled to your opinion and all, but:

That was your very first post ever. Kinda odd.

Can you look at when I made this account? I'm a long time lurker. All the drama on GAF and this news is the first to make me post. I'm that serious, I was dying for a new media server that could play HD MKVs. That and they are missing a huge opportunity here with not allowing exporting of captures to edit and share abroad.

That and mp3/in-game soundtrack was yelled from the rooftops last gen and they had a chance to make good this gen and they made it WORSE!

The problem with Music Unlimited is that it's a really bad service. By far the worst of the music uploading/streaming services. If it wasn't utter shit compared to the competition, then I'd consider switching to it, but I'm not paying for bad example of a service I already pay for just for music on one device.

I bought it when it was 12 bucks for the year. At that price it was worth it, but yeah the PS3 app is pretty terrible. The Iphone app though is decent enough, and the library is good.

The no DNLA support though is FARR more troubling to me than MP3's. I use that feature at least as much as I use my PS3 for gaming. It never in a million years crossed my mind they would take it out. I just assumed that was a standard feature.

Does the Xbone have DNLA?

Thanks for the info

Yea but there are plenty of other bullet points in the official FAQ which say things like "not at launch but will be available at a later date"... or something along those lines.

For DLNA and MP3 the fax simply says"No."

Um, I wasnt saying the ps4 drive is NOT 9.5 I linked to the drive I bought in hopes to use it, and it appears to be 10mm, and was hoping that the 12mm the german site referenced was correct and that this one isnt.

I was not saying that the size listed in this press release was not 9.5...

My point was that I have ordered the same drive, and it's 9.5mm. We should be safe.

I full expected a lot of features to be missing, although MP3 playback is a weird one. They need to fix before end of 2014:
- Twitch archiving

Well there's one done already, you just have en enable from PC first.

Can I archive my livestreams on Ustream or Twitch?
At this time, livestreams will not be archived for further viewing on Ustream. Users can archive their livestreams on Twitch by presetting via PC.

Why is it so hard to let people change their usernames?

Probably has something to do with the way the database for PSN was built. Being a database guy myself I can easily see someone designing that in a way that would make the ability to change your username a shitload of work.

None of these things affect me. I just want to know if it has .MKV support.

Ironically you'd be able to use PS3 Media Server or Universal Media Server to transcode and stream mkvs on the fly if DLNA was supported.

I use DLNA on my PS3 all the time. This is seriously fucking disappointing

The outcry over the lack of MP3 playback on the PS4 is baffling. In 6 years I think I played an MP3 once using the PS3.

Let's face it: the amount of people who used their PS3 as a MP3 player or DNLA device must be so negligible that they decided to scrape it. Remember that there are licenses involved to media playing capabilities and the cost might interfere with the pricing strategy.

There are much more capable media devices out there for a fraction of the price.

Used it for Custom music while playing Burnout Paradise and Need for Speed Most Wanted on PS3 and Vita. It's definitely an odd omission.

I'm thinking about cancelling to and getting a WII U or holding off on next gen altogether and getting an iPad Air or Surface tablet instead.
Does the Wii-U have any of those features?

Except they don't mention that in the FAQ. Whereas they do specifically mention that other things will get patched in. If they knew it would be coming later why risk upsetting people by not mentioning it? It would go far into calming people's fears if they just did that.

Hey, if I set my real name to:

First: Puppet
Last: Shadow

when I call Sony for support down the road, do I have to say 'My name? Uh... Mr. Puppet Shadow...'?

Ya, this and not having my own music kinda takes the personalization out of my console.

You don't need to be empathetic towards me.
The ps3 fucking sucked as a media server, I can't get it to play shit anymore. People are just pissed they can't stream their pirated movies, it can still play Blu-rays people, buy your movies and TV shows.

Yeah, I just noticed that.

This feature wont matter much for me, I have only upload speed of only 0.8mbit.

I can't remember ever using mp3 on my 360 or ps3.......I have like 10 other things that play mp3's and most games don't even support custom soundtracks.

For everyone crying about the DLNA/Media Center issues

Grab a chromecast and any other android/linux media device

Its disappointing that its no there but clearly not a dealbreaker when you can solve the issue yourself with VERY little investment

Some baffling decisions made on withholding pretty standard features.

I'll miss being able to download soundtracks from the Store- those were MP3s correct?

1. Not allowing exports is understandable when developers don't want certain parts of a game spoiled by the recording feature.

2. There was no such thing as in-game soundtracks on the PS3 last gen which really makes the sudden outrage over this even more confusing. It's not a feature that is essential to playing your games. People are more pissed off about the fact that if you want music you have to pay for MU then not having it at all.

Don't really give two shits about background music or DLNA support. At least Sony are being honest about it though.

bingo.

I did use it as a DNLA server once but now I have a dedicated HTPC.
I never used mp3 during gameplay EVER on any console.
That feature can goto hell.

You better keep Logitech wheel support Polyphony or there is going to be hell to pay! Glad to see it isn't a "hard" no though. Keeps my hopes alive that my G27 will work with GT7 or whatever the hell it ends up being.

I won't buy a PS4 if GT7 doesn't support my wheels out the box.

The ps3 fucking sucked as a media server, I can't get it to play shit anymore. People are just pissed they can't stream their pirated movies, it can still play Blu-rays people, buy your movies and TV shows.

Just because I prefer to convert my physical collection into neat more convenient to use format doesn't mean I pirate (especially important in case of DVDs, autodeinterlacing is shit). Can't be arsed to shuffle around my 80 minute CDs to play music either.

Can I share my game videos on YouTube?

No. At launch, PS4 users will be able to use the Share button on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller to upload gameplay videos to their Facebook account

Yes because every fucker has a Facebook account... I did wonder when the old Sony would return, I guess they are the ones making the OS for the PS4.

Yeah this was a chance to change that not drop it altogether. Just because you don't use it doesn't mean you shouldn't fight for your gaming brethren.

What are they going to say to the developers that make rhythm games like Audiosurf, sorry your can't "Ride your Music" on PS4, we don't allow MP3s to be stored on the HDD.

Can I put my PS4 system in an upright position like the PS3 system?
Yes, PS4 can be used in the horizontal or vertical position. In North America, vertical stands for PS4 will be released by partners as officially licensed program products during PS4’s launch window.

wtf is "partners" I want the same stand and DS4 dock sold in the UK which is an official Sony product, not a licensed ones like the Red Samurai and Rocketffish bullshit currently available at Gamestop and BesBuy.

I hope some of these 'no's are just a snapshot of the current situation. Sony supports DLNA well so that would be a surprise if they don't add it soonish. MP3s too.

Can users switch the light bar off and on?

No. The light bar also serves as an indication of whether the DUALSHOCK 4 controller is turned on. Across different games, the color and brightness of the light bar on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller can be adjusted by game developers, but it cannot be completely switched off.

Could you just take the controller apart and remove the light bar? Hope it's not directly soldered to the board or something like that.

I'm not excusing Sony for not having support for music but MU is $3 a month with Ps+. Not saying it's right, still real cheap though.
