Deadly Premonition PC port locked to 720p, no gfx options (nm, Durante fixed it)

I think people need to take a step back and remember that five years ago these games would never come to the PC. Who knows what kind of state the code is in and the amount of work necessary to just get it running on another platform. That's not to say "you should be happy with what you got" just that you're gonna need to deal with some bullshit before some of these Japanese devs learn that there is a viable market for their games on PC and put the necessary resources into it from the get-go. Maybe Dark Souls 2 is that game.
If we were going by even 10 year standards, I'm still rocking my Silent Hill 3 PC release with perfect controller functionality and 2024 x 2024 textures at 1080.

I changed my mind and decided to give it another go. I'm not very far -- I just met the sheriff and deputy. During that cutscene, I noticed the lake behind them is just one flat blue color. Are some water effects absent here?

This is the same as it was in the Directors Cut for PS3 (which this is a port of). So yes the water texture that was in the 360 is missing.

No idea why they removed it, but to be honest that looked awful too (repeated texture like a wallpaper). So it's no big loss.

I do not believe anything else like this is missing in the DC though.

Which unfortunately is only half-true. Higher resolution and FOV vs. missing effects. It's not straight better looking.

@silenttwn
Yes, the water always looks like that during the cutscene. Exactly the same as on PS3. Normally there should be a nice water effect (as it is the case on the 360 version) and you can see it in the DC if you later return to that place during normal gameplay.

That is a weird anomaly someone pointed out to me and I didn't notice since I've never played the 360 version (JP 360 and they locked the US release.) but in normal gameplay it's there.

Works fine at my end so far. Now that I'm playing the game again, there is one thing though that bothers me, and I'm wondering if Durante would be able to fix this, so I'll just ask:

Durante, Would it be technically possible for you to pause/resume the game with a hotkey? The cutscenes (and there are plenty of them) can't be paused, only skipped. It's a long game with lot's of dialogue and cutscenes, and I bet I'll miss a pause button several times.
Just a thought.

So, what's the consensus? I want to buy this game but am hearing that it has some glitches and crashing issues.

So basically everyone agrees that Durante is some sort of wizard. That seems to be the consensus. I suggest we build a throne and worship him so that he doesn't become vengeful.

Also that mirror picture is insanely cool. It's like seeing an alternate dimension.

There is a nice effect of the wet road mirroring the environment that is missing, too. And the floating red leaves in another scene are gone.
That's just what I noticed from the the beginning of the game. Not 100% sure if there is more later on. I would need to replay the 360 version to check.

Really? Darn it.

Guess there will never ever be a definitive version of this game then. What a mess.

At least when the resolution fix bugs are fixed and we have controller support, this will be the closets thing to a definitive version.

A "What a mess" version IS the definitive version of Deadly Premonition.

Yes, PC with higher resolution, better performance and hopefully gamepad support should be fine :)
Especially since no matter which version, graphics aren't really a strong point of the game so it's not too bad that some things are different. Story and Characters aren't affected by that and they are the reason why I love this game.
I was just slightly disappointed because I had hoped the PC version would be improved over the PS3 version.

Never mind, the ALT key pauses the game. And a quick pause/unpause even speeds up those long loading times considerably. Now it would just be nice if the game didn't crash everytime I alt-tab out.

I added a way to suppress the (broken anyway) built-in gamepad support, which avoids the up/down scrolling input issue. So now I was able to actually progress in the game and get to some enemies to see the bug. The way those shadows/trails/whatever are rendered is ... very interesting. Good thing I like challenges.

I added borderless window fullscreen mode to circumvent the alt-tab crashes (and since I prefer it anyway).

If you could find a way to enable proper analogue movement on the left stick, we can use Xpadder/Pinnacle to fix the rest of the controller support.

That would make me VERY happy :)

I REALLY want to start playing this now but don't know whether to use the Alpha fix (thanks Durante !!) or not. Are there many negative issues when using the fix? Without the fix, how badly does the game run?

OR, is the game just broken and should just not bother until its fixed?

The only thing the fix effects is the monster/ghost shadows when they first appear. Barely noticeable and does not effect gameplay. And the Map is not rendered in the correct location (deal-able).

It runs perfectly. Definitely worth using the patch if you want to render the game higher than 720p.

I don't know if it's the fault of the fix but sometimes some details in the world don't appear at all or very late when I'm only a few meters away.

Damn I didn't bother playing the PS3 version of this game because the PC one was announced. Now this! :/

Thanks Durante. Going to donate come payday then purchase this game when its in better shape.

Hopefully, Durante and RSG can spark up a conversation to further improve Deadly Premonition PC. At least it's comforting to see RSG give their humble thanks to Durante.

Any idea on when you'll be pushing this version out? Would love windowed fullscreen. Hate those crashes and trying to see if my save is corrupted or not, so would love to test that out.

Surprisingly enough, the keyboard controls are pretty goddamn well made in DP.

I would agree if there wasn't a chase scene in the first hours where you have to repeatedly hammer a and d, sometimes e and at the end there's a QTE. Really not suited for the keyboard.

I wouldn't say goddamn well made (primarily because of the menus), but they are absolutely serviceable. Certainly a far cry from unmodded Dark Souls.

I want to fix the enemy shadow/trail bug (which I've been working on for the past few hours) first.

Best of luck and sorry if I sounded a bit pushy. Keep up the great work man. I think I can say on behalf of all of us here, we appreciate it!
