Ultimate PS4 FAQ is live on PS Blog

If only Sony said that all of these missing basic features were coming or being worked on, I wouldn't worry.

But they seem so definitive and off-brushing that it makes me worried about the future. I at least expect my fucking PS3 not to serve as a better machine than new 2013 hardware :(

you can't put a price on sparks
You're right, I edited that one out.

But seriously, you can't justify the others by stating "they were an update on PS3". These things have become standard on consoles over the past 5-6 years and they should be included at launch.

I still have my PS4 on order but it looks like I'll be holding onto my PS3 for much longer now.

Maybe these features are in the works, and if so, why not tell us that in the FAQ?

If the ps4 OS was a carbon copy of the one on ps3 I would agree but they no doubt rebuilt it for x86 usage and practically none of the code they worked on the past 10 years is useful.

It depends on what your expectations are and what Sony laid out for us to expect. I don't think I ever expected exact feature parity to ps3 on day one but I do expect it within the first year or so.

Harddrives need to be 5400RPM Sata 2 drives....

I presume SSD will still function with the benifits of faster Seek times, a higher throughput and now ATLEAST sata 2 Support (SSD had benefit even with Sata 1) I wounder if the controller is Sata 2 or 3

Would like to see this answered tbh/acknowledged

Can users copy the recorded gameplay video from PS4 to other devices, such as PC?
PS4 users will not be able to directly copy recorded gameplay video files from PS4 to other devices, though they will be able to use the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s Share button to upload videos to Facebook for distribution. This function will be supported by a future system update.

From all of these... that is the one that I most didnt like. =(
But... when they say "This function will be supported by a future system update", they mean the share function (like add other places to share it) or they mean the function to copy the gameplay to other devices?

To me "this function will be supported by a future system update" is referring to the first part, directly copying gameplay videos to other devices.

So I read it as Facebook upload will be available right away.

I find the 'not getting ps4 now' comments to be absurd.

Maybe I'm being a bit 'i've got mine', but I use my console for gaming, and gaming only.

Wow, the headset stuff is ridiculous.

I have a Sony official BT headset (not the Pulse, the other one) and I won't be able to use it at launch? wtf.

Even if these services aren't supported by the OS there's nothing to stop Sony or another party to release an app ala Netflix that can handle DLNA support (crosses fingers)

Do we even know where Sony stands with app development? If Sony was open about that I'd be happier. Let someone develop a xbmc or plex client for PS4.

I read it as FB upload will be available in the future, and copy to external storage will be available never.

Am I the only one finding the irony that the games first focused system that was praised upon is getting complaints about its media functionality now?
I love you. Haha.

Yeah, the system that was sportssportssportstvsportstv is getting complained about for gaming and the system that is all about gaming gets yelled at for media.

And then there is Wii U.

Still looking for an answer on this...

Here's my question I posted as a comment on the blog. Still awaiting a response, maybe somebody here can speak to this?

Hey guys, excellent FAQ. I have one quick question.
I, unfortunately, made my PSN account when I was a wee tot. Because of this it’s a sub account. I understand we cannot upgrade to a master account, sure. But, when I get my PS4 will my sub account be eligible to be the Primary Account on my console?
I ask because in addition to a large amount of trophies, I have purchased a ton of Vita digital content. Only one account can be used on Vita and I would very much like my Vita account and my primary PS4 account to be the same. Making a new PSN account would mean saying goodbye to a lot of hardwork and money,
Please tell me on day 1 with my new PS4 this account won’t give me any problems.

Sorry if this has already been answered, but does this mean we can't even playback video/mp3's from USB? That's quite a surprise.

Lack of DLNA is baffling also. What a step backwards here.

If external harddrives are a no-go, how is it possible to ever transfer the captured screenshots and videos of a game to a PC? I seriously don't need to download it via Facebook, right?

I'm having a hard time finding a Sata II Hyrbied SSHD @ 5400rpm and 1 TB or more. Anyone have any luck? I've been to Newegg, TigerDirect, and Amazon.

If I can't get a hybrid I'll grab the largest 2.5" hard drive I can find.

Don't all things come full circle at some point?

Somewhere along the line i think people want similar devices to function similarly to each other. A game console that doesn't play games? Blasphemy! A piece of home theater equipment doesn't have "smart" functionality? Blasphemy!

At some point, as others have pointed out, we will most likely have to break down and make a HTPC individually to get all the features we want into a single package, which as a byproduct, would also be able to do some light gaming with the "proper" setup (varies by user).

I think external hard drives for game content and external hard drives for other things are not one and the same, from their perspective.

Based on the FAQ, there is nothing that says that you cannot play video's via external devices. However, MP3's will not work.

With the news that we need a 5400RPM sata 2 Harddrive

Anyone still planning to test out an SSD drive on launch or a 7200RPM drive, hybrids are 3rd choice

Im sure the craddle can be moded surely to fit a 12.5mm

From the FAQ said:
Where can I share my game content using Share?

PS4 players can share game video on Facebook, game screenshots via Facebook and Twitter, and gameplay livestreams via Ustream and Twitch starting on November 15th in North America.

Facebook game video sharing (along with Facebook screenshots and livestreaming on Ustream and Twitch) appears to be a launch feature according to this.

I swore the only requirements stated were 9.5mm and at least 160GB. You can look forward to my side by side of a stock PS4 drive vs a 1TB SSD on the 16th.

Unless someone beats me to it.

I think only requirement is larger than 160GB and no thicker than 9.5mm. The 5400RPM and SATA II is just what it is equipped with as standard.

There are valid and important reasons for someone to want to change their online ID if it can be displayed publicly. For example if it's offensive or if it contains their real name and they want to remain anonymous.

For Sony to prevent users from accessing this feature (which I'm assuming is dead simple to implement unless they really screwed up) is foolish. charge them 9.99 to do it and you'd make a killing.

But if it's not displayed when you can simply change your display name, when no one can see it then what's the problem? Unless you have a guilty conscious over your ID that's offensive, then fine.

I don't really understand how people have such a lack of hindsight. The PS3 and 360 of today are light years away from the launch consoles. I'm not even fazed by the FAQ. Features will be added over the life of each console.

I'm glad that the PS Blog outlined most every important point (with a few exceptions) this far from launch so people can make an informed purchasing decision. How easy would it have been to say nothing and just let people rage after they bought the box?

Those that want a platform that does every single thing they could want upon start-up (if they can afford it) should go grab the eternal king of gaming: a PC. Those who are okay with the launch feature set and games are adopting. Those who want to wait. Great. Wait until it's worth it to you.

Im sure lots of people will end up doing it in general, but the more the better and I will look forward to the comparisons, since I gotta wait until Nov 29 the US guys are the test dummies :)

Noticed this:

Can PS4 and PS3 users play together online, cross-platform?
The functionality is technically possible and some developers may choose to support it for their titles

I'm more worried about 7200RPM overheating than a 12.5mm size issue, given the teardown info. Guess I'll play it safe and get a SSHD.

The way I read it:
What type of hard drive does PS4 use?
PS4 is equipped with a 5400 RPM SATA II hard drive. Users can choose to install a new hard drive so long as it complies with these standards, is no thicker than 9.5mm, and is larger than 160GB.

List of 3/4 criteria for a hard drive, at least in terms of what they're willing to support. Now, what will the PS4 accept, that's the question.

1TB SSD that I've been looking at comes with the Iron Price. $500.00 USD. I can live with slower speeds on the PS4 unless there are some serious performance gains. To me such a storage solution should be kept for PCs that can take advantage of that feature set.

Good point on the overheating.

I think I will be more than safe with an SSD and tbh, it will be unrivaled with speed or at the very very least seek times will be massively improved. I suspect night and day loading could be great, especially with a higher sata controller.

1 Thing I didnt consider though, they mention you can update the OS to 1.5 via usb.... what they didnt mention that I have yet to come accross, are they going to provide the OS data to reinstall to a brand new harddrive from scratch on launch

Yeah they touch on it, but just recommened that you stick to your region with digital content. Does not say whether or not DLC is completely region free.

That's the thing, I have PAL account but I live in SEA last 4 years so all my games are BLAS (Asian) or BLUS (US/Canada) SKUs it's pain in the ass to get DLCs, and the whole thing with PS4 Primary on one account have me worry if I can continue to have few different accounts for different DLCs.

On top of that I have invested a lot in my main PAL account, both money and time wise.

They already uploaded both update (308Mb) and restore (800Mb+) files by mistake. I got both just in case PSN goes down under load.

You are.

And I've gotten a lot of use out of custom soundtracks, for gaming.

I've never used that but streaming I use a fair bit of on PS3. I'd use it more if it was better. And I'd certainly like to replace the multiple device I have with one.

No ability to copy video recordings to a external hdd to edit on a pc is a bit of a dealbreaker too

Yeah, I hope I'm right too, I didn't see it before but I think this other section covers it better:
