3DS had an amazing 2013

8 games across an entire year represents an amazing lineup?

What do you call the PS3's year then?

God of War, Last of Us, Bioshock, Puppeteer, Ratchet, Ni no Kuni, Metal Gear Rising, Tales of Xillia, Project Diva, GTAV, Final Fantasy XIV, Dragon's Crown, Saint's Row IV, Diablo 3, The Wolf Among Us, Gran Turismo 6..... and I'm sure I'm missing a ton of other games too.
Hearing someone compliment Nintendo instead of Sony is like stabbing a dagger into your fanboy heart, isn't it? Hey, I have a crazy idea. What if two systems could have a good year without having to shit on one to appreciate the other?

Looking forward, it seems like the 3DS will slow down next year in favor of the Wii U. So far we know about the new Kirby game as well as Smash Bros., but not much else. Personally, I'm fine with it. I'm just happy they managed to cover so many great franchises already, even some that the DS never touched (like Kid Icarus.) I guess we can talk about what we would like to see in 2014, but this thread is mainly to celebrate and highlight how awesome 3DS was this year.

I was just thinking yesterday, if 2014 will be 3DS' last year before a successor shows up.
As you said not much has been announced so far.

Why? It's silly to make any calls whatsoever at this point. After the gigantic turnaround we've seen with Mario and Zelda this year, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason they haven't shown anything since E3 from that game is because they're trying to make it better in light of the reception. It's way way waaaaaaaaaay too early to write this one off.

I was burned from the DS game, the new one looks kind of hideous and it's being made by the same people just under a new name. Not confident at all.

I'm looking forward to Yarn Yoshi however, that one looks interesting.

We didn't know about a majority of the games in the OP last year. They will slowly announce the 2014 lineup after Christmas. I'm not sure it will be as impressive as this year's though since they might be shifting their focus to the Wii U.

It really did, although over the course of the whole year I personally would put the PS3 ahead in terms of exclusives. But apples and oranges and all that. The year is ending on a high note for those of us in Europe too with Bravely Default next month.

My only real criticism of the 3DS this year is that there haven't been that many Japanese exclusives, or ones I want to play anyway. Part of the reason I bought a Japanese 3DS as well as a PAL one was for the quirky stuff but, aside from Senran Kagura, Taiko no Tatsujin, Lost Heroes and that one where you're trapped in a room with a girl, there haven't been all that many to date.

The eShop is hitting its stride too with some great VC releases and the likes of the Sega 3D classics, but going forward I really hope we get more GB/GBC/GG games and GBA at some point as well.

Is it just me or did the DS had a more vibrant third party library at this point in its life?

I would say so. Just comparing the number of games in my 3DS collection versus the amount I had at this point in the DS' life would show a bit increase for the latter. But then I suppose the industry has changed since 2005/2006.

Definitely. I don't expect that any other year will come close to this year's in terms of quality and quantity. I took a look at my 3DS's playtime statistics a few weeks ago, and I played more this year alone than in 2011 and 2012 combined. And this is before Zelda and Bravely Default, which will probably add another 100 hours of enjoyment.

It felt weird having the vast majority of games I was looking forward to be on a handheld for the whole year. Now that the ball is rolling and 3DS is a place where games are exceeding sales expectations, 2014 can be a year to get a lot of the more stagnant series going. Yoshi's Island and Kirby already fit in, Advance Wars, Metroid, and Starfox, all with Smash bros batting cleanup. Could be great.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Yeah, we started knowing more about 2013DS back in February; and then, April for the onslaught.

So far, next year in US is

Mario Golf: World Tour
Yoshi's New Island
Super Smash Bros.
Kirby
Bravely Default
Professor Layton and the Aslant Legacy
Professor Layton v.s. Ace Attorney
Sayonara Umihara Kawase
Iron Fall

Quite possible

Monster Hunter 4
One Piece: Unlimited World Red
Harvest Moon: Linking to the New World
Devil Survivor 2: Break Code

Did I forget anything?

Fire Emblem will probably be the first game I get for my 3DS this year, barring some kind of surprising sale. Really looking forward to that. I'll probably get

Mario and Luigi
Luigi's Mansion
3D Land
Paper Mario
Zelda

as well. Maybe Pokemon X too but to be honest knowing it's still the same game frustrates me quite a bit.

Not if you live in Europe and don't give a shit about the Nintendo mascot games anymore it didn't.

Personally did not feel like I got a whole lot out of it this year. 2012 was much better.

In Europe we finally got SMT Devil Survivor Overclocked which was pretty amazing, Project X Zone and Layton and the Azran Legacy released here two days ago. 3DS keeps on trucking.

Already own 21 titles (sans GBA, VC and eShop titles) on the machine and I still need to play Layton 5, Luigi's Mansion 2 and Mario & Luigi :p

It's funny to look back at the doom and gloom people were giving the 3DS at the start. It has a wonderful library at the moment and may even surpass the original DS at this rate.

Of that list in the OP, last year we knew of:

Luigi's Mansion
Fire Emblem
Animal Crossing

I'm really not too worried about 2014 yet. 3DS's 2014 is looking nicer at this point than 2013 looked a year ago.

That said, I don't actually expect 2014 to be better than this year, simply given that Nintendo will hopefully be trying to bring a wide range of Wii U software to market. The third party situation will hopefully be improving a bit with better results in the West this holiday season, too.

The 3DS had a fantastic year. Spent the most money on that platform. So good.

I bought a 3DS for Pokemon, and I've yet to buy anything else. I downloaded some demos, and to my surprise I didn't enjoy Fire Emblem. I didn't even finish the demo. I've yet to try many others. I'm put off DKCR because the Wii version is superior (especially in Dolphin), and if I understand it right there are a bunch of games that are more along the lines of interactive books that are lumped in with proper games, which throws off recommendation lists.

I need to take a proper look through the list of games and see what I'll actually enjoy, because right now the only games I want are Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, and 3D Land.

Same game as previous Pokémon titles.

Then again he has no problems with buying Mario & Luigi, Luigi's Mansion and Zelda which are even more similiar to past titles.

And lets not forget Fire Emblem.

Man, he will be really frustrated while playing on his 3DS.

Almost forgot, Steamworld Dig deserves more props.

This game came out of the blue and was far and away my favorite surprise find this year. It's super fun and addictive. Think Dig Dug meets Metroid. Highly recommended.

With the exception of SMT IV STILL not being in Europe, I could not be any happier with the current situation of the 3DS.

Let's thank the one game that triggered this onslaught of great games, because back when the 3DS launched it didn't seem to be able to hold its ground. \o/

...still waiting for SMTIV though.

I remember thinking about buying that Cave Story port just to have SOMETHING to play on my 3DS.

And now? Too many games, too little time. I love it. For me, it all started with XL. KH3D and FF:T came out, and the avalanche of games had started.

on topic: yes, it was an amazing year. If we include games like BD, Layton, Inazuma Eleven, AA5 and so on we get one of the strongest annual lineups ever. 3DS is the king this year

I actually was more interested in the eShop titles for 3DS and then 3rd party games. Nintendo's games so far don't really appeal to me (Except for Animal Crossing which is now 500+ hours in) ((And Monster Hunter 5,000+++ hours of forever))

On the eShop:
- SteamWorld Dig
- Various Picross games
- Dillon's Rolling Western
- Harmoknight
- Splash Or Crash (Kersploosh in other areas)
- Tokyo Crash Mobs

I love 'em. Little games you can start playing without fuss.

It's not a 100% accurate comparison. Every pokemon game is exactly the same each time with a few really minor tweaks that isn't enough to make it feel like I'm not playing the same game again. Even if you could say the same for those other games, there's only been 1 other Luigi's Mansion (and I didn't play more than half of it) and I can't even remember the last time a proper old school Zelda game was made. Probably have to go all the way back to Oracle of Ages/Seasons.

I toyed with the idea of a Vita, ended up with a 3DS XL, and I'm impressed.

Handhelds will never trump console or PC gaming for me, but I wish I had owned this device sooner.

I'm itching to expand my library but have so much money tied up in next-gen as it is.

This post reminds me that there are still so many great games for the 3DS i need to play. They definitely have justified my purchase of the system this year.

Now just announce an F-Zero 3DS next year, and it will all be complete... :D

This is no different than any other long-running series. There's a reason it's a franchise. Plus, anyone who's heavily invested in Pokémon and its battle system will tell you there's more to it than a few "really minor tweaks". If they were to change the core mechanics, it wouldn't be Pokémon.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Best year in the US by far. I doubt there will be a better year for 3DS here, though 2014 shouldn't be a bad year for us since there's still stuff coming over from Japan. I'm curious to see what Nintendo announces for Japan though, aside from the very little we know about so far.

Oh wow lol when you can buy Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing on pretty much every available platform, call me.

Yup, that post backfired quickly. ;)

I fail to see how, but whatever. Cheerleader threads are sort of a pet peeve of mine, especially when the actual number of games listed aren't all that impressive even when you throw in the third party stuff. It works out to maybe 1 potentially interesting game a month? That's enough for my buying habits I guess but that's assuming that each and every game is going to fit a specific taste. In my view for a system to have a "Great" lineup for a year it has to cover a far larger spread of tastes and all of which are high quality within their respective genres.

DS had "Great" years, Super Nintendo had "Great" years. 3DS had a good one. It might have some great years ahead of it, but I can't see that lineup as fitting that bill. Also, for those dismissing multiplatform games you do realize that DK was on Wii, right?

When I look back at DS, I miss a lot of games and variety. It had even FPS games, more 3rd puzzle and platformers, RPG's, 2d Castlevanias...

I like the 3DS, but it feels like it could give a LOT more, specially from thirds. I guess this is what happens when they all move to smartphones.

So if a good line up isn't to your taste liking it makes you a "cheerleader", and while these "cheerleader threads" are worthy of your ire, derailing them with your own cheerleader post about a completely unrelated system is totally different and not annoying at all? Gotcha.

[1] And the funny thing is is that this is exactly what happened this year on 3DS.
[2] And we could've swapped out DK for other first party games.

2013 being a great year for 3DS is indisputable.

Mmh, yep 3DS had a great year. Lot of great exclusive games too. I don't see your point with broughing PS3, really. I mean, does 3DS having an amazing 2013 year prevent PS3 from having one too ?

OP is living in the future, no fair! I'm certainly not talking about 2013 in the past tense until Zelda hits, at least.
It really has been and continues to be a great year.

In addition to all the games listed so far, I have a fair amount of praise for a number of smaller eShop titles. Mighty Switch Force 2, Dillon's Rolling Western 2, the new Mario vs. DK (lots of sequels, I guess), HarmoKnight, Ikachan, the three Guild 02 games. I think Gunman Clive might have been early 2013? And of course the eShop titles that have already been mentioned, like SteamWorld Dig. Anyway, lots of 'em. They might not be great great, but I enjoy small, cheap games, even if they're only 'good'.

Yup, awesome year alright. While there are some 3rd party efforts too, I can't help but notice.. they're all first party titles. Not sure its really fair to say its been a great 2013 when its just been mostly Nintendo pushing the titles for it, not that I'm complaining ;), but it could be much better with 3rd parties.

While I don't think it had a great year, it really came into its own. Fire Emblem: Awakening alone could have carried the 3DS on its shoulders. It's remarkable, and I'd place it alongside Advance Wars as Intelligent Systems' best work.

I'm interested to see what next year brings. Hopefully they fix the abysmal Virtual Console situation and the lineup at retail is pretty paltry. Even that rumored Majora's Mask remake would go a long way.

I wrote it off after I saw it wasn't by Nintendo.

That might seem petty but for a game of that stature, it bothers me and the game has looked like a clone of Yoshi's Island so far with a weird artstyle.

I know Goodfeel is doing Yarn Yoshi(if it actually exists:p) but I am more optimistic for that one because of Tezuka's involvement.

I hope Nintendo intervenes a bit more in the production of that game. It would be sad to see the Yoshi's Island series become this throwaway franchise they give to third party studios who aren't really well-known for making quality products. I see no reason New Island can't be good, so hopefully EAD will ensure it's heading in the right direction.

**I'm also not among those who think it's hideous, the art style honestly looks fine to me, if not quite on the level of the original YI. I think it looks better than YI DS, which I always found really pale and drab for the most part. Like a cartoon whose life had been sucked from it.
