3DS had an amazing 2013

The only first party game that's interested me this year has been Pokemon, which I am enjoying. Also really loved Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies. May pick up Zelda, and I also have Soul Hackers to get back into. The timing for that game was just wrong in Europe; right before my two most anticipated 3DS games meant it didn't get the love I'd hoped to give it. But it's there when I'm ready to go back.

So yeah, 3DS has had a good 2013 for me, despite the disappointment that SMT IV won't be out over here this year.

My handhelds are getting a lot of love. Vita with its occasional great games, and 3DS with its constant stream of quality titles. If I go overseas for work, both of these systems will acquire even more love.

I got a 3DS this year and it was incredible.
And I don't have Pokemon or Donkey Kong, and with Zelda coming out soon...
I still have a lot of games to buy on my 3DS

I'm fairly sure that half of the posters in this thread didn't read OP's post, and instead read the title of the thread, looked at the picture, and assumed that was all they needed to know.

If you're interested enough to contribute to the thread, at least read the first post of it.

Anyways, on topic, yes the 3DS had a fantastic year, especially if you're a fan of Nintendo's IPs. Not only did we get a lot of their "lesser" IPs (e.g. Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing), but they were all some of, if not the best games of their respective series. Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and Fire Emblem all have a large portion of their fan base saying the games released this year are the best in their franchises.

3DS circle-jerk?

I'm in there.

Fire Emblem and Pokemon are massive titles. Haven't even got anything else on the list yet.

Incredible year, it was also the first time I've played the Oracles through eshop. And I've got Ocarina of Time 3D through a 2+1 free on Amazon. And Virtue's Last Reward for some reason didn't come out here until february, but it was also amazing. My first Fire Emblem didn't do much for me, however SMT Soul Hackers was great.

Shin Megami Tensei IV and Ace Attorney have gotten a lot of love from me on the 3DS in the past few months.

The 3DS pretty clearly dominated this year from a software perspective.

I think I've bought 8-9 3DS games this year, and I usually only ever buy 3-4 games a year. And there's still Zelda coming, and I still haven't played lots of 2011/2012 releases and several 2013 releases like Luigi's Mansion. :(

I actually had to budget the amount to time I spent with each title. That hasn't happened since I started PC gaming.

Awesome year for sure.

Yup - the system has had a great, great year. I love the 3DS more than I loved the DS, at this point. I hope the high quality games don't stop coming, though next year looks a bit more sparse so far (Though there is Yoshi, Kirby and Smash, so at least there is something).

very excited for Zelda in a few weeks.

3DS has finally been starting to live up to its older brother :')

Although its best titles are probably already generally higher quality than the DS's best, to be honest.

Good point is that from the 1st party games mentioned in the OP a year ago we only knew about 2 that were already out in Japan at that point (Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing) and Luigi's Mansion 2. I'm not too worried myself about 2014.

Yup! Agreed, a great year for the 3DS.

Also a great year if you own a PS3 as well.

In short, a great year if you're a gamer.

There, great.

I bought my 3DS late last year, because I had extra money and I knew there'd be a Pokemon and an Animal Crossing for it. Right around a year later, I'm pleased. I don't play a large number of games any more, but having those two makes it worth the purchase price for me.

Too few people are mentioning one of the most significant releases of the year:

The new StreetPass games - Battle, Garden, Mansion, Squad (PAL naming)

They've occupied my mind and attention far more than any of the other individual game this year.

This thread plus the $149 BF deal for a 3DSXL at target has me really leaning towards taking the plunge this year.

2013 was clearly a great year for the 3DS. What are the big games coming out in 2014?

I fail to see how, but whatever. Cheerleader threads are sort of a pet peeve of mine, especially when the actual number of games listed aren't all that impressive even when you throw in the third party stuff. It works out to maybe 1 potentially interesting game a month? That's enough for my buying habits I guess but that's assuming that each and every game is going to fit a specific taste. In my view for a system to have a "Great" lineup for a year it has to cover a far larger spread of tastes and all of which are high quality within their respective genres.

DS had "Great" years, Super Nintendo had "Great" years. 3DS had a good one. It might have some great years ahead of it, but I can't see that lineup as fitting that bill. Also, for those dismissing multiplatform games you do realize that DK was on Wii, right?

Opinions, bro. No need to stir the pot.

On topic: 3DS was pure beast mode this year. I hope Wii-U follows !

I bought nearly ever major release this year for the 3DS. It's incredible how many games came out. I'm glad I waited until January to buy my 3DS for the people who bought it on launch it must've been terrible.

Someone should so make a picture with every 3DS retail game that came out this year. *whistles*

I've already bought 10 "big" titles (7 physical & 3 digital) for my 3ds this year, thats almost the same amount of games I bought for it during the systems first two years. I haven't even gotten the new pokemon yet and there are still both Zelda and Bravely Default coming out later this year.

This truly has been 2013DS.

You know, despite the 3DS having an incredible year, I never played any of the games for more than 10 hours. I'm not sure why, but even when I games I absolutely loved came out (SMT IV for example), I found that it ran out of steam after a while.

Hell, I don't think I've beaten a 3DS game since RE Revelations came out.

It was a surprisingly good year, especially due to the fact that I dumped as many hours as I did into Project X Zone. Currently working on Soul Hackers and loving it. They really should put more obscure PS1 titles on 3DS, it works quite well.
No chance of that, though.

2014 is gonna be the real year of the 3ds because you'll be able to get all of the amazing 2013 games on discount

Yep. Got all of them...along Lego City Undercover and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon which are great (and missing in the main post).

And combined with the third party games along with the digital releases it sure was a great year. Will end 2013 with at least 50 retail 3DS games.

Don't remind me! I have a huge backlog of 3ds games and I'e been neglecting my pc in order to catch up. Glad I'm not getting a new console this year. I wouldn't have time to play them!

I know how you feel, I still have Luigi's Mansion 2 to clear. No good reason why I haven't, it's a very fun game. Just haven't yet.

I have played for way more than 10 hours... 250 on Animal Crossing. And, annoyingly, that fucking otter still hasn't given me my badge.

Definitely was a great year. 2014 will probably be a tad slower, at least on first party stuff, as Nintendo has to focus more on WIi U.

Fine by me since I just got a Wii U and vastly prefer gaming on the TV to a portable. :D My 3DS will get plenty of play though as I just got it this spring and still haven't played a lot of great games that were out before then as I've only played 3D Land, Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion (didn't like or finish), Animal Crossing and Pokemon Y (currently playing).

Oh yeah, I forgot I put 30 hours or so into Animal Crossing. But that was within like 1 week, and I got bored fairly quickly compared to all of my friends who got it.

From this "amazing" line up only Zelda appeals to me.I'm still waiting for Bravely Default to make me buy a 3DS.Then i'll also pick ALBW + FF Theatrerhythm.
Hopefully by then Nintendo & SE will put their shit together and finally anounce a western release of DQVII.

Got mine in April and tbh, it's really the only gaming device that's had me excited all year. I only got a Wii U because I felt so great about the 3ds.

I have:
Shinobi
RE: Rev (don't know why I got it because I can't handle horror games)
MH3U
ACNL
Dillon's Rolling Western
Tales of the Abyss
Pokemon Y
Tetris
Kid Icarus

Nintendo really stepped it up on that platform this year, one of the best years of Nintendo 1st party games in a long time regardless of platform. I bought/plan on buying every game on that list in the OP with the exception of Mario Party, and even then there were 3rd party games like SMTIV and AA5 to keep me entertained. Easy contender for best software library of the year, although I still have to consider the PS3. (of course in number of exclusives only I think 3DS wins)

had an amazing year?
you know there are still 2 months left do you? :p

I can't count the number of 3ds games I bought this year... probably about 25-30 with 2 more on their way in the near future...
I can count the number of games I bought for other systems: 1
and judging from my 3ds/ds backlog... that number won't change next year.

I should've never bought one, it took over my gaming live like a parasite.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
Still have SMT IV, PW:DD, EO:IV, EO:U, and RF4 too!

I've not been this happy with a single system line-up in a year in a very long time.
And Bravely Default ;p

8 games across an entire year represents an amazing lineup?

What do you call the PS3's year then?

God of War, Last of Us, Bioshock, Puppeteer, Ratchet, Ni no Kuni, Metal Gear Rising, Tales of Xillia, Project Diva, GTAV, Final Fantasy XIV, Dragon's Crown, Saint's Row IV, Diablo 3, The Wolf Among Us, Gran Turismo 6..... and I'm sure I'm missing a ton of other games too.

*Facepalm* Try to read i guess next time?

Even if you want to include 3rd Party, 3DS is still doing much better there. SMT4, Soul Hackers, Etrian Odyssey 4, :Millenium Girl, PxZ, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon, Virtue Last Reward, Harvest Moon, Rune Factory, etc and many more.

With that, it even shows how 3DS cover almost all genre there. From your list there, any visual novel? Any life simu game? You know your answer.

To be fair, that comparison doesn't really work when most of the third party games you listed are turn based RPGs.

? Well, i am too tired to list all but, Monster Hunter is hunting game, Etrian,SMT,and Soul Hackers is Turn based Rpg, Virtue Last Reward is Visual Novel, AC,HM is life sim, Layton is puzzle,PxZ is Srpg, Pokemon Mystery is Dungeon Crawling rpg.

That is tons of genre covered there, and i am sure there are still many games on other genre too.

I don't have a 3ds ( I Recenty got a DS) but I have been following their software output.
This was a great year. I really hope somehow they can continue this quality of software output, while attending the Wii u situation . I think they need more studios.

For me the major 3DS releases this year were safe entries into tired franchises that often failed to live up to their predecessors. Only Dark Moon stood out as a title that was ambitious and competently executed upon.
