"Like a one man human centipede"

With the poor reception of the launch lineup, and potentially some technological issues, I'm glad I didn't jump in at launch. This is really worrisome.

This, people, is why you wait to buy new consoles if you do not feel the urge to get it on Day 1. Faulty units are always around but you will never know how widespread it is until after a few months.

Hopefully, since I'm buying a bundle.... it's a newer batch. You know.. because...

Heh, 2 year warranty.

Okay, okay, okaaaYY (Joe Pesci's Lethal weapons tone) I admit it was pulled by the hair. It's just that I can't understand people entering panic mode because of 3-4 faulty unit reports. that's all

I know I know..was just fukkin with ya... Praise the sun.

After playing a brief game of NBA 2k14 I quit and inserted my battlefield 4 disk. The system prompted for an update, so while watching the progress bar (Around 20%) my controller light turned from blue to white. Hasn't worked since...

Get those extended warranties ready! and SCEA on speed dial!

**UPDATE**
Went thru a number of "fixes" with customer service and none of them worked. They are shipping me a box to get the unit serviced.
Safe Mode on the console no longer works.

**UPDATE** 2

For shits and giggles, swapped the hard drive for a fresh one, that also didn't work.
Sorry to hear that bud make sure they give you some compo free game or something

Yup.

Love seeing the extremes of reactions in this thread though.

You can't fix hardware either. Considering lots of people have downloaded and installed the software and upgraded their firmwares without issues I don't think it is a massive software issue.

However, it does seem that 2 (or 3?) of the ones with issues all came from the Taco Bell batch. Whether this is the same batch of consoles as retail, no one knows.
My point is that a software issue can potentially affect more people and at different times. A hardware issue is more likely to present itself immediately.

Wow, glad you cleared that up man. You ever think about getting into fortune telling professionally?

You really think Sony as a hardware company would let the failure rates even come close to that of the 360? Comn son' use your brain, Microsoft knew what they were doing releasing defective consoles out in the wild, it was strategic for timing, but no way in hell would Sony ever green light a decision like that.

Oh hurray we're all early BETA testers again!

God I hate launches -_-

Every product that launches is a beta test. The less complex, the less likely they are to break.

Should have seen how big a pain in the ass Ncomputing's M300 boxes were at launch. Took almost a year to get them to be properly stable.... not a good thing when the only solution is unplug and plug back in 6-12 times per day.

Somebody has to buy it at launch right? I'm happy to beta test this for you.

So the OP's actual PS4 itself was bung? Not the controller?

That's ok then. I know that sounds weird to say, but that actually makes me feel more at ease than if it was the controller.

1-2 reports out of countless reviews and systems in the wild is pretty good I'd say. Friday we'll know for sure.

Wow, what's with the hostility towards the OP?

Sucks that your PS4 broke down already and it's good to hear that Sony are responding quickly...

Are you kidding? Microsoft is notorious for awful failure rates &/or hardware problems on their consoles much more so than Sony's consoles, especially with the Xbox 360 & RROD.

Sony Recalls 1.6 Million Bravia TV Sets Because of Fire Risk

And this one had several companies affected by Sony, but here is just a Dell article:
Dell announces recall of 4.1 million laptop batteries
The batteries in question, made by Sony Corp., are in notebooks shipped between April 1, 2004, and July 18 of this year.

Don't be blind or naive. Corporations are going to corporate...or something. They are all the same.

All launch day buyers are beta testers, smart buyers wait until the next year for a newer revised version.

Still free is free, Sony better send you a brand spanking new one with some extra freebies for your troubles.

Meanwhile, some gaming sites continue their marathon PS4 live streams, some for 12 hours straight, without any "technological issues."

Well, we don't really know how this will play out yet for most early adopters, but yeah, I've learned my lesson after all these years.

I say that confidently, but I won't though pretend the usual launch hardware issues are what's keeping me from buying either system at launch - it's the low number of launch window software I'm interested in. May just end up working out better for me, I guess.

PS1, 2, 3, Vita launch.

SNES, N64, GC, Wii launch.

360 Launch unit.

Never had any of these platforms break within a year minus the E74(?) error on my ELITE.

There were reports of 360's dying out of the box and my PS2 had the infamous DRE after I bought it and brought it home.

I'm just curious if these failures are HW or SW related?

well its somewhat comforting that it wasnt just the update that fucked it. But yeah people. Its a console launch. expect some lemons.

Before people start talking about Sony enginnering :- That was always overrated for the most part and most electronics are simply not made with care and craftsman ship, but by cheap chinese labour. Its going to happen.

While I agree it is a risk to buy a console at launch, I recall the original PS3 systems running rock solid. I had mine for 6 years after launch before I sold it and it was still running flawlessly.

Glad I decided not to get a launch console. Gonna be very interesting to see how widespread this problem is.
