PS4 sells through 1 million units on Day 1 in NA, best start in PS / console history

Console gaming is dead, new systems are DOA, etc. Oh, right, the goalpost was moved to "b-b-but they'll stop selling soon enough like the Wii U, you just wait!"

Numbers will be ridiculous when it's released in Europe.

Yup. This is for certain.

Europe is going to gobble up this thing like crazy. I mean, the Xbox isn't even launching in most of the countries here until sometime in 2014.

If Sony can keep supplies going, they are going to make some serious bank.

PS4 sells through 1 million units on Day 1 in North America, best start in PS history

Can we leave out the PS part of the title?

So now all those ridiculous smartphone websites and podcasts which claim consoles are dead and things like onlive, ouya, iOS and whatever other Android device were the future can now stop.

But... but Jason Rubin said smartphones are the future!

People buy consoles for other reasons other than just current exclusive games that have come out, which is what many believe here is what sells consoles. They buy it for the hype and promise of more games in the future, it is a investment. There was this idea being pushed that PS4 has no major exclusives out right now, thus it will sell poorly, again completely missing the point why people buy consoles at launch.

.

I understand that (it's the reason why I'm buying it tomorrow despite no killer app and not much to excite me), but this kind of reception seems unprecedented, and I don't see anything unprecedented about this launch. It's the usual crappy launch with the usual rushed software and the usual hype and the usual hardware problems and the usual promise of the bright future. The usual investment. So while everything you say is logical, it doesn't really satisfy my curiosity I'm still left surprised and wondering.

Maybe it's the aforementioned PR machine in action... I pretty much just stick to GAF for the most part, so perhaps I'm ignorant of the scope of it. IMaybe it's the blue balls. I dunno

The sales are impressive, but it's clearly grounded in the novelty of new tech, not the games, and between hardware problems and poor software, I think PS4 is going to start having a tougher time once the launch honeymoon is over.

The hardware problems don't seem to be really widespread, are going to be resolved in future batches and the exclusive line up is only getting better.

Every single unit shipped, UK might be the only country in the world where Xbox One outsells PS4 due to 360 vs PS3 sales and Fifa bundle.
FIFA 14 will only come free with Xbox One Day One Edition pre-orders, while stocks last.
Sold out quickly, it was just to help get Xbone pre-orders up. It's a moot point especially when most retailers are going to be bundling PS4s with Fifa for a cheaper price.

It's releasing a week earlier than the PS4 over here, so combine that with our austerity measures only one of them will get our wallet contents this month. I really hope we go back to being the PS nation we were with the PS2. We're drowning in a sea of CODFIFAs :(?

Sorry if my english is poor, I'm french and I always heard that when you use "might", it's a 20% probability, so even myself I don't think it's going to happen

Nope, as someone mentioned above, they'll just move the goalpost and cross their fingers that they are correct, so that they could still believe their predictions are more accurate than the unwashed masses.

Perhaps, but many gamers are thirsty for powerful new console tech, and after MS crucified themselves with Bone, it left the way clear for Sony.

The sales are impressive, but it's clearly grounded in the novelty of new tech, not the games, and between hardware problems and poor software, I think PS4 is going to start having a tougher time once the launch honeymoon is over.

I'm curious. Did you buy a PS4?
You are constantly posting about the massive hardware issues, but we have not a single clue about how widespread the issue even is. Let's not jump the gun.

They sold a million units. A million units are running in people's homes right now.
You'd think there would be a muuuuuuch bigger uproar by now if the unit is as prone to defects as people try to make it sound.

This puts into perspective the hardware failure reports. If you sell 1 million consoles on day 1, even if 1% are DOA, that's 10,000 individual customers that are going to go on forums, twitter, Amazon etc. to report it. And I honestly don't think we've seen those kind of numbers. So when you think about it, the chance of getting a DOA PS4 is likely less than 1%.

There are plenty of great games to play at launch, including interesting third party titles. The launch line up seems pretty good to me, and people are sick of the limitations of last generation technology (low frame rates, low resolutions, general slowness).

That and the abysmal performance of the Wii U. But just like previous consoles have failed to catch on (Saturn, Jaguar, Dreamcast, GC, OG Xbox) others have thrived in the same generations, PSX, SNES, PS2 etc.

See, this is my worry when people in this thread are already calling the console war over. Although you mentioned a bunch of consoles that failed to catch on, with the exception of the Jaguar, most of those machines have generally offered great experiences because they had to offer something to combat the PlayStation brand that was sucking up all the exclusives. So, for example, I had much more fun with both the GameCube and Xbox libraries. Indeed, I've always found the PlayStation brand to be... not mediocre, but vanilla. Inoffensive, I guess.

The thing is, it's not 2003 any more. No company is going to take a chance, and the age of third-party exclusives is slowly coming to an end. So if the Xbox One tanks, what's going to be the consolation prize for owners like it was in the PS2 days? It didn't matter that the machine had only shifted 25 million units or so and had tanked in Japan when you were playing Halo, KOTOR, Morrowind, Jade Empire, Project Gotham Racing, etc. I mean at least Nintendo will have to keep supporting its own platform for at least the immediate future.

When you chuck in the fact that franchises like Wipeout have been kicked to the curve in favour of cinematic experiences like Uncharted and The Last of Us, as someone who bought an Xbox 360 to play Geometry Wars, a knockout blow by Sony in Round One would actually be something that I would be concerned about rather than elated.

But then again I'm in the minority of GAF users.

Many many many sales. The question is, can PS4 beat Xbox in England?

Yes, just check amazon.co.uk for a good idea of sales, CoD Ghosts on PS4 has outsold the XB1 day one edition.

In the daily sales there are 2 PS4 SKU's above the only XB1 SKU (there is another SKU but it's way down in the charts so sales will be minimal) so it's pretty safe to say 1 week before XB1 launch and 2 weeks before PS4 launch PS4 is outselling XB1 2:1.

It's not really close in the UK.

So has any console ever done better? If not thread title could be changed to best start in gaming history, or console gaming history, best console launch in history.

i can't speak for everyone certainly but I've been loving the system since i bought it. It is most definitely worth the hype and the price on Day 1. The games I've played have been amazing (killzone, dcuo, contrast, resogun, trine 2), the livestream stuff is great, remote play is mindblowing, and the UI is really fast and smooth. Same with the PS Store.

I see a lot of "Usual" in your post..

7 years since the last consoles launching is not 'Usual'

Congrats, I assume that's one of the biggest launch day console sales in history.

Very smooth launch too considering the numbers.

I don't believe any console has ever sold 1 million on day one, let alone in a debut month. This is definitely going into the record books. Not to mention we have Black Friday upcoming, so if Sony can somehow replenish supply in great quantities, we're looking at well over one million.

Ignoring Resogun there? Also if sales have such effect over what you enjoy why are you in this thread, besides to whine and complain about mostly off-topic issues?
