PS4 sells through 1 million units on Day 1 in NA, best start in PS / console history

So it's the biggest console launch so far? I know it's not really relevant as they're such different products with completely different price models but just out of interest how many iPhones get sold on launch days?

Interesting that is the only such comment I can find in the whole of the thread

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/search.php?searchid=8817236

All other mentions of console war are based on your mention of other people in this thread claiming it was already over

1 person making 1 post stating such, a consensus does not make

I'm sorry but you were being a tad disengenous to suggest that

There really hasn't been such claims outside of 1 post among 500+

I do think there's a general notion that Sony will outsell MS globally year one but that doesn't mean the company will win automatically

Look at this gen

There is no single console this gen or before that which SOLD 1 million unit in a day. So pretty much the console war is OVER. Learn to live with it.

Also, this is why I questioned Sonys fiscal 5 million number they stated. The only way the prediction holds true is 5 million being the max amount Sony can manufacture. Between NA and Europe Sony could hit 5 million by years end with supply.

This is what happens when your company has extreme customer goodwill and loyalty bundled with good prices. Word of mouth spreads and people will spend money on it.

That is the thing MS so royally fucked up. I was on the 360 train but am not putting any money toward MS for the xbone for the foreseeable future. I dont trust them, i dont like them. Fuck em

What Sony now needs to do is get ahead of any potential console OS and bricking issues and make sure people know it will be fixed or replaced. I imagine since everyone is so damn connected these days the problems could seem worse than they are but we will see.

Some context:

At launch, PS3 sold 0.19M in 2 weeks in the US.
It took them about 50 days to ship 1 million units in NA

Wii sold 1.25M in the first 42 days in NA

Xbox 360 sold 0.9M units in the first 39 days in NA

Didn't find any numbers for the PS2 launch, but here Jack Tretton says they"
reach the one-million mark (with the Playstation 3) faster than our top-selling platform, PS2...".

According to this IGN article, the US day one sold through units for PS2 were just over 500,000. So I believe no console even came close to these numbers aside from the Japanese launch of the PS2 at 980k.

What was the advertising like in the States, btw? Like in terms of how salient it was. Admittedly, I don't watch the channels that Sony would advertise the PS4 on, but I haven't seen a single advertisement here in New Zealand. Not a print ad or even an ad before a YouTube video. It's almost like Sony know they're going to sell out so they don't even need to bother! :p

I know in Aus, ive only seen that xbox one ad, but thats probably due to it launching first before the ps4. I expect ps4 ads to roll out sometime within the next week.

It also explains the inordinate amount of failures too. With over 1m sold through even a 1% DOA rate is 10,000 complainers! With a more realistic 3-5% DOA rate (which is true for modern electronics made at third party assembly companies and poor QC) that would be 30-50k people who have dead PS4s, a massive number of angry people venting on forums or review sections.

Probably a magnitude more. That's a completely different beast

During launch weekend the latest sold around 9 million I think.

Think about 2007, 2008 years...PS3 disaster sales, software line up...

Five years later Sony is triumphing with greatest launch ever...PS4 baby...

World keeps turning...

Congrats to Sony. Well deserved and a good serving of crow to all those in the press who've been harping about Smartphones/Tablets killing the console space.

Even as a Nintendo fan first and foremost, this is excellent news, as it means the WiiUs non-existent sales are solely to blame on Nintendo and not some market contraction/erosion.

Will join the PS4 when games are out I'm actually interested. With UC4 coming, that should be somewhere around this time next year.
Can't really say this yet.

PS4 really was the right option for the enthusiast console gamer though. Reasonable price, compelling featureset, takes the crown in "power". There's no guarantee it will translate into mass market acceptance... but it rarely hurts to be seen as a powerhouse of any given market.

Could start the same thing that brought Wii and PS2 to success.

If you want, count PS2 launch in Japan which sold in 980 000 units in 24 hours.

I do find it funny, that the two posters in the WiiU threads that were venomously asserting that the WiiUs sales were a reflection of the general publics disinterest in consoles are the same two downplaying this news as "well lets wait past launch"

Jesus guys, hang it up.

That said, now is not the time for compliancy for Sony. They have had a good start, but the easily can lose it and fall behind. They need to keep the momentum going with kickass first and second party software and intelligent marketing. Rest for a minute and they could be back where were 7 years ago.

Yep. Puts things in perspective a bit. Can also explain Psn issues. 1 million+ hitting Psn servers heavily downloading games etc all at the same time is a massive strain.

See, this is my worry when people in this thread are already calling the console war over. Although you mentioned a bunch of consoles that failed to catch on, with the exception of the Jaguar, most of those machines have generally offered great experiences because they had to offer something to combat the PlayStation brand that was sucking up all the exclusives. So, for example, I had much more fun with both the GameCube and Xbox libraries. Indeed, I've always found the PlayStation brand to be... not mediocre, but vanilla. Inoffensive, I guess.

The thing is, it's not 2003 any more. No company is going to take a chance, and the age of third-party exclusives is slowly coming to an end. So if the Xbox One tanks, what's going to be the consolation prize for owners like it was in the PS2 days? It didn't matter that the machine had only shifted 25 million units or so and had tanked in Japan when you were playing Halo, KOTOR, Morrowind, Jade Empire, Project Gotham Racing, etc. I mean at least Nintendo will have to keep supporting its own platform for at least the immediate future.

When you chuck in the fact that franchises like Wipeout have been kicked to the curve in favour of cinematic experiences like Uncharted and The Last of Us, as someone who bought an Xbox 360 to play Geometry Wars, a knockout blow by Sony in Round One would actually be something that I would be concerned about rather than elated.

But then again I'm in the minority of GAF users.

Blame Microsoft for intentionally ignoring the Xbox heritage of "power." Microsoft "intentionally not targeting the highest end graphics" for the Xbox One means they threw all those things the OG Xbox and Xbox 360 were about out the window to focus on something.

Anyway, congrats to Sony for their successful launch. Hopefully I'll be a PCPS4 user in the near future.

quoted for truth and logic.

I was expecting somewhere around 500-600k for ONE month to be honest...

CONGRATS SONY!

So pretty confirmed PS4 just had the biggest console launch in NA.

Im very happy because this means good news for us: videogame fans.
The industry isn't dieing after all. This is also good news for the other manufacturers. Even if they don't end up on top the can live to try another day.
Ps4 has the potential to be great. Launch games ain't there for me but great things will come.

Best start in PlayStation history or the best start ever in console history?

Looking like the best start ever in console history. The PS2 at 980k in Japan on day one looks like the next best.

Edit: it looks like the 980k figure is over a weekend, so 2 days. In that case this launch is far ahead of the PS2 launch.

Not an attack on you, but I find the idea that Sony getting complacent NOW is pretty absurd. Their humble attitude has worked TREMENDOUSLY in their favor.

They'd have to be fools to give up the goodwill MS practically HANDED them on a silver platter.

also i think EA etc will be breathing a sigh of relief that the console market still exists in this way.

Nintendo may have had them worried (and ipad etc)

To clarify, the article is comparing to its second best launch (PS2).
PS2 took 3 days to reach 1M units, which was released in Japan only.
Kudos goes to Sony and NA market :D
While the result is without any doubt very good, I think it should also be pointed that there is a "culture of the preorder" in place these days which wasn't really that widespread back then, so having a far stronger start doesn't necessarily mean it's going to have also stronger sales in the entire console's life cycle.

I was certain Sony could sell what they stocked shelves with... but I honestly thought if they hit a million units it would be for the month (the thing hasn't even seen Black Friday!) not first day.

Oh wow... 1 million confirmed sales on the 1st day?
This is huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge

Anything less than that for xbone will be considered a defeat by the general public

Is the 5000 faulty numbers correct though? Never seen any confirmations on that

People using one figure for one console for one day to render judgement on the health and prospect of a whole sector? Premature much?

Can someone create a list of day-one sales of as many consoles as possible?
I'd like to see how it stacks up. We need graphs, people. Graphs!
