Interesting that is the only such comment I can find in the whole of the thread

All other mentions of console war are based on your mention of other people in this thread claiming it was already over
1 person making 1 post stating such, a consensus does not make
I'm sorry but you were being a tad disengenous to suggest that
There really hasn't been such claims outside of 1 post among 500+
I do think there's a general notion that Sony will outsell MS globally year one but that doesn't mean the company will win automatically
Look at this gen
Some context:
At launch, PS3 sold 0.19M in 2 weeks in the US.
It took them about 50 days to ship 1 million units in NA
Wii sold 1.25M in the first 42 days in NA
Xbox 360 sold 0.9M units in the first 39 days in NA
Didn't find any numbers for the PS2 launch, but here Jack Tretton says they"
reach the one-million mark (with the Playstation 3) faster than our top-selling platform, PS2...".
lol, for those who still doubt it. don't blame em though, this is mighty impressive.
What was the advertising like in the States, btw? Like in terms of how salient it was. Admittedly, I don't watch the channels that Sony would advertise the PS4 on, but I haven't seen a single advertisement here in New Zealand. Not a print ad or even an ad before a YouTube video. It's almost like Sony know they're going to sell out so they don't even need to bother!
So it's the biggest console launch so far? I know it's not really relevant as they're such different products with completely different price models but just out of interest how many iPhones get sold on launch days?
I did my part. The best start to what will be the best generation yet.

Can't really say this yet.Congrats to Sony. Well deserved and a good serving of crow to all those in the press who've been harping about Smartphones/Tablets killing the console space.
Even as a Nintendo fan first and foremost, this is excellent news, as it means the WiiUs non-existent sales are solely to blame on Nintendo and not some market contraction/erosion.
Will join the PS4 when games are out I'm actually interested. With UC4 coming, that should be somewhere around this time next year.
Best start in PlayStation history or the best start ever in console history?

Apple is pointing at these numbers and laughing. No.
It also explains the inordinate amount of failures too. With over 1m sold through even a 1% DOA rate is 10,000 complainers! With a more realistic 3-5% DOA rate (which is true for modern electronics made at third party assembly companies and poor QC) that would be 30-50k people who have dead PS4s, a massive number of angry people venting on forums or review sections.
During launch weekend the latest sold around 9 million I think.
See, this is my worry when people in this thread are already calling the console war over. Although you mentioned a bunch of consoles that failed to catch on, with the exception of the Jaguar, most of those machines have generally offered great experiences because they had to offer something to combat the PlayStation brand that was sucking up all the exclusives. So, for example, I had much more fun with both the GameCube and Xbox libraries. Indeed, I've always found the PlayStation brand to be... not mediocre, but vanilla. Inoffensive, I guess.
The thing is, it's not 2003 any more. No company is going to take a chance, and the age of third-party exclusives is slowly coming to an end. So if the Xbox One tanks, what's going to be the consolation prize for owners like it was in the PS2 days? It didn't matter that the machine had only shifted 25 million units or so and had tanked in Japan when you were playing Halo, KOTOR, Morrowind, Jade Empire, Project Gotham Racing, etc. I mean at least Nintendo will have to keep supporting its own platform for at least the immediate future.
When you chuck in the fact that franchises like Wipeout have been kicked to the curve in favour of cinematic experiences like Uncharted and The Last of Us, as someone who bought an Xbox 360 to play Geometry Wars, a knockout blow by Sony in Round One would actually be something that I would be concerned about rather than elated.
But then again I'm in the minority of GAF users.

According to this IGN article, the US day one sold through units for PS2 were just over 500,000. So I believe no console even came close to these numbers aside from the Japanese launch of the PS2 at 980k.

Probably a magnitude more. That's a completely different beast
Thanks. I know it's about as relevant as comparing the PS4 to new car sales but I was just wondering what sort of figures we were talking about.During launch weekend the latest sold around 9 million I think.

That said, now is not the time for compliancy for Sony. They have had a good start, but the easily can lose it and fall behind. They need to keep the momentum going with kickass first and second party software and intelligent marketing. Rest for a minute and they could be back where were 7 years ago.
While the result is without any doubt very good, I think it should also be pointed that there is a "culture of the preorder" in place these days which wasn't really that widespread back then, so having a far stronger start doesn't necessarily mean it's going to have also stronger sales in the entire console's life cycle. To clarify, the article is comparing to its second best launch (PS2).
PS2 took 3 days to reach 1M units, which was released in Japan only.
Kudos goes to Sony and NA market
I was certain Sony could sell what they stocked shelves with... but I honestly thought if they hit a million units it would be for the month (the thing hasn't even seen Black Friday!) not first day.quoted for truth and logic.
I was expecting somewhere around 500-600k for ONE month to be honest...
CONGRATS SONY!
Damn. Apple STILL in a whole nother league.
so if 5000 is faulty thats not too bad?
