PS4 sells through 1 million units on Day 1 in NA, best start in PS / console history

Yeah, they gotta be thinking "maybe we didn't get enough cash for Titanfall" though.

Yeah, no kidding! The install base looks like it will be highly in favor of the PS4 worldwide. I hope EA got their moneys worth. Michael Pachter expects Microsoft to strip kinect out and lower the price to match the PS4 1 year after their launch. I don't think they'll even wait that long.

Of course, but however it shows that there are more enthusiasts now than ever before to support an insane launch success. It shows that given the right product and marketing, the console market is healthy enough to support new platforms.

It also shows that incompetence, arrogance and complacency will absolutely kill a product in this market. And while Sony has done it's soul searching after the PS3 launch, and the PS4 really reflects that re-thinking, Nintendo would be wise to do the same. Can they turn the WiiU around? Probably not, but they should take the lesson Sony so impressively demonstrated and apply it to their future endeavours.

Also, as far as mass market acceptance goes, the PS4 is probably the only next gen console that is priced right for the market. Unlike WiiU and Xbone it hits the sweet spot of what people are willing to pay and feel like getting value out of it.
Oh definitely.

I actually think this will be one of Sony's biggest successes, Nothing esoteric about the core tech inside meaning easy to get manufacturing costs down, a price that makes the choice between One/PS4 pretty easy, and a lot of goodwill. This launch will only add to Sony's momentum.

if Microsofts money covers the development of Titanfall, EA couldn't give two fucks

EA cares about establishing the IP and additional revenue (if there would be) that the PS4 could offer. No gaming company let alone EA would be happy with just covering dev costs when theres other money on the table.

Wow congrats Sony. Here in Australia all PS4 stock is sold out until Christmas/2014. It's crazy. I've never seen this much hype for a console.

I think you missed the point. When Sony is culling off studios like Studio Liverpool, it sends a clear message of where they see the future of gaming. Whether it's a bad thing or not totally depends on whether you like that vision of the future.

My canary in the hole for this is whether they turn Shadow of the Beast into a God of War clone or produce something more like Shadow of the Colossus.

So Sony having to shut down a fundamentally unprofitable studio is "a clear message of where they see the future of gaming"?

What are you on about? Sony's first-party studio's have been upping the ante the entire generation and there's no sign of them slowing down. Compared to Microsoft, this comparison gets even more laughable, and Nintendo's vision of the future of gaming also seems to sink like a rock. I'm not sure if i'm reading your post correctly here.

I don't think we have day one numbers for most of them, and not for US + Canada anyway.

I have launch months for everything since the PS2 (but not the PS2), to closest 5K.

GBA (Jun '01) - 880K
Xbox (Nov '01) - 720K
GCN (Nov '01) - 660K
NDS (Nov '04) - 480K
PSP (Mar '05) - 620K
360 (Nov '05) - 325K
PS3 (Nov '06) - 195K
Wii (Nov '06) - 475K
3DS (Mar '11) - 400K
PSV (Feb '12) - 225K
Wii U (Nov'12) - 425K

Now you make me look bad. This is what I came up with! :'(

Sir, yes, sir!

Yeah, I walked past an EB yesterday and they were still advertising day-one stock for XBOne too. Wonder what the supply is going to be though.

Is it possible?

xbone_zpsffabfb1c.jpg

I'd be surprised if places like Brazil go to the PS4. With Xbones being assembled there and in turn not being taxed as high, they're way more affordable than the PS4.

I'd imagine there's other countries as well that the XB would maintain dominance. Granted, with the PS4 selling as it did in NA, I'd be worried about the EU too if I were microsoft.

And? It's not about the name on the box, it's about the type of game it is.
I've generally found that the Playstation consoles tend to have the largest and most diverse libraries. I'm a little puzzled at your critique. Are you only judging them by the top ten best sellers or something?

I thought I read that MS bought the IP outright and they own Titanfall now. Was that debunked?

It wasn't debunked, but it was torn to shreds. It makes no sense that MS would buy an IP and still let EA publish it. If this were true, MS would be screaming it from the top of every building by now.

I just finished Puppeteer. Your whole argument is invalid. :)

Yeah just went to my local Harvey Norman store and their allotment for the PS4 is sold out til next year and they don't even bother to have a demo unit set up for it, however I do see an Xbox One demo unit setup. Lol

Your post started out strong.. but it ended in a less than intelligent conclusion.
Tablets, like consoles, are going to be here for quite a while

I really doubt they'll last as long as consoles have though. The thing I see for tablets is improved processing power/storage/graphics. They're also obviously going to keep getting thinner. But I just think the novelty of tablets might very well wear off for most people. The amount of things you can do on a tablet is limited to the device's touch-based nature. And that will not be changing any time soon.

They're going to miss out a lot of revenue, though.

Thats what the money covers. MS pays for the projected sales the copies of the PS4 version would make.

Now that we know that a lot of PS4's are being sold, projections may have to increase and future moneyhatting for other games will get more expensive.

I'm excited to hear this.

Not because I'm a fanboy (I will buy an xbone too), but since the PS4 seems more powerful it will be nice to see it lead the pack so more games are developed on it to reach their full potential.

Good point.

The bought product lifetime exclusivity of the first Titanfall game.

Basically they extended their one-year exclusivity period to... two years. ( assuming Titanfall 2 comes in in 2016 )

Honestly, it was a complete waste of money. There was very little to gain from that deal, since one year's exclusivity is more than enough to lock in adopters.

IMO, MS did it simply to spite Sony as a competitive move to destroy rumours and speculation that Titanfall will eventually come to PS4.

Which backfired because Vince Zampella tweeted immediately after clarifying that the exclusivity deal was only for one game.

Ok what exactly is Puppeteer and Tearaway then?

What games are they trying to clone?

How are those games made to be cookie-cutter and vanilla as you said?

Those are about as niche as you can get

You've completely missed the point. It's about the games produced. The ones that are profitable aren't making games that are universally loved by all. They're obviously loved by a large number of people because their profitable, but it's disingenuous to say that such a direction is good for gamers as a whole. That's why I have trouble with some people saying a knockout punch is something we should all be celebrating.

Microsoft's first-party offerings have been limited and/or lacklustre, a downward spiral since the launch of the Kinect. As I said earlier, I'd love to see a kick in the balls be the kind of motivation that gets them trying something new to distinguish themselves, especially as their machine is weaker than the PS4. However, given Microsoft's recent woes, I can't help but see the Xbox brand being severed if it fails to perform adequately in the first couple of years.

At least Nintendo can still support its machine, but the problem is they move at a glacial pace.

I don't begrudge Sony it's success, but I do see it as perhaps a warning sign that my time with big budget gaming is coming to a close.

EDIT: Console gaming has become increasingly homogenised over the past decade. Again, it's not about new IPs but the types of new experiences. At the very least the indie market should be a light in the darkness, and it is great to see Sony making it easy for those studios.

So in a space of a day they sold 5 times as much as their previous console did during its launch month. Wow.
Those are US numbers. Typically Canada's sales are about 10% those of the US sales apparently, so it may be more like 910K US, 90K Canada. Although, with limited supply I don't know whether the ratio would be more stacked in the favor of the US much more. And their phrasing is actually "over 1 million."

Although, given this is just a day, I can easily see this being the best launch month for a console ever (at least for the systems I have info on).

Yeah just went to my local Harvey Norman store and their allotment for the PS4 is sold out til next year and they don't even bother to have a demo unit set up for it, however I do see an Xbox One demo unit setup. Lol

I've seen similar stories around the place. "Sorry no PS4's till next year. But can I interest you in an xbox one?"

I'm glad to see it doing well so early. The sooner both consoles get to that "sold enough millions that sales don't really matter" point the better off we'll all be.
