I felt so bad for Eli's wife when he told her to shut up. I just wanted to go through the screen and give her a hug. Lots of stuff happened in this episode, but damn that part really shook me.

Also, it sucks that we only got Oscar for one episode. Dude was awesome.

Surely Eli's time is coming. I think he'll guard his real reason for giving people up to Nox and go out as a martyr. For this reason I hope Will isn't the chosen one but if he is then I hope he botches it.

I loved the latest episode, very very slow but in a way that made you feel the sadness in every scene. I think it takes a great show to make an episode like this work.

Yeah Eli's got like a 70% chance of being clipped next week.

And it's a shame because I've been enjoying every scene with him lately. He's one of the more compelling characters

Chalky was a while ago too but i agree that the scenes with him and the girl have made him a bit less interesting

Both of them have high chances of dying by the end of the season

I like how this seasons big bad isn't necessary an antagonist of Nucky.

Chalky in a way has been the main character of this season, with Narcisse being his big bad. It's a clever narrative device. As for the finale, I expect Chalky to kill him next season.

Nice one by Eli's wife. Nucky is on it.

And I didn't expect Roy to be a copper honestly. What a twist I said to myself. All this time I thought he was setting up some criminal business in Atlantic City :p

Can't wait for the finale.

EDIT

Read some old posts, apparently I have to use the word Pinkerton. These guys are new to me :p

Did
Roy Phillips (Ron Livingston)
really
kill that guy
? or was that also a
set-up to get Gillian.

Set-up to get her to confess I'd say.

And you don't have to spoiler tag this. Only preview discussion.

Yeah it was a set-up. The guy he "killed" was one of the Pinkertons who revealed themselves after Roy asked "Did you get that?". Man, every time I hear the word "Pinkerton" I want to rewatch Deadwood in all of its Swearengen glory.

I was honestly bored to death with the majority of Chalky's scenes this week, while he's mostly been an engaging character this season this last episode it just seemed like they were whispering the entire time. I feel bad for Gillian too, but most people apparently do, so...

Next week though? Richard Harrow gonna be like pop pop pop makin' them feds drop.

I absolutely HATED the Gillian sting. What kind of horseshit writing is this?

"Guys, guys, I got it. I will pose as a businessman who's looking for short term accommodations in Atlantic City. i will make an appointment to view Gillian's house, at which point I will seduce her and make her fall in love with me. I will gain her trust by banging her brains out and curing her heroin addiction over the course of several weeks and/or months. At which point I will propose marriage to her and ask her to leave the city with me. Now, stick with me, cause this is where it gets good: We set up a shoot out in an dark parking garage and whisk her back to the mansion, where I have an emotional break down and threaten to turn myself in, FORCING her to confess to the murder of her former lover! Then you guys jump out from the shadows and snatch her!"

"I love it. Fool proof. All in a day's work, boys."

If you put it like that it sounds a bit too much yes :lol

Everyone in here who has never heard of the Pinkertons before should stop what you're doing at the moment, and watch Deadwwod.

I'm excited to see Chalky gain some new allies, but I had to continually turn my TV up so I could hear what they were saying the entire episode.

Deadwood is the GOAT

Also, poster above, bit naive to assume he planned that attack from the very beginning of the relationship. He was clearly failing to get the kill out of her, so resorted to drastic measures. Come on, doesn't take much thinking.

Yup. More like "geez this is taking too long and our financiers are getting impatient, time to go for broke."

Chalky's scenes were so fucking boring this week. All this fussing about Daughter has made him less interesting, definitely. It's high time he went home to be a family man.

Regarding the twist, it's obvious Roy planned it all to lift Gillian to the highest of heights and once the moment came, fool her into thinking she was about to lose her happiness all over again. Gillian, being as broken as she is, couldn't bear the thought of losing her last shining light, and hence did the stupidest thing she could've done, misguidedly thinking she was actually comforting the man.

Well played, Roy, well played.

Agreed.

I just don't get the whole angle, is it just karma for killing Jimmy v2? Not to throw too much sympathy to her but she was a orphan that got raped at like 12 then pregnant, had her son killed, then grandson taken away, etc. She's lived a pretty horrible life, so why mess with her more? I would have probably just preferred a custody battle between her and Harrow then Harrow eventually taking her out. I'm not going to pretend I have great ideas for her situation, but the whole season with her was an episode of Punk'd basically.

Guess I'll throw full judgment after the finale next Sunday.

Really intense episode, I was so afraid that Chalky or Gillian would bite it tonight. I feel so bad for her :( I hope this isn't the end for her character.

Meh, it was kinda shit anyway. Nonsensical too. Gillian had no business still existing in this show. Just like the Brody family in Homeland.

Yeah I wouldn't have seen the private investigator thing coming had it not been for the guess in this thread. It was pretty obvious at that point but I'm not really perceptive and rarely pick up on things. I just take the show as it comes and don't try to figure out stuff too much before it happens.

i still can't make heads or tails of the pinkerton thing. it was just so out of nowhere

definitely one of the biggest WTF moments i've had watching a show. it was a huge stretch but i guess it was worth it. though i hope the show doesn't resort to that sort of gimmickry again

assuming gillian's done for i'm going to miss her. she was one of the most interesting characters for me... i caught myself sympathizing with her and hoping she'd get a fresh lease on life with roy .... but then i realized the fact she was a stone cold killer was slowly inching away in the back of my mind. and i guess that's what the writers were aiming for this season

really digging this season. not as good as the last one, where i feel the show really hit it's groove and it became much more than just a prohibition period piece. but assuming there's about two seasons left in its life i like how its winding up. probably my favorite show outside of mad men

You mean duckroll's post and my post from last week? If that's the case, sorry dude. :(

Just finished this week's episode. Enjoyed it immensely. It was happy to move at a leisurely pace and let us watch the characters interact with each other.

I'm a little concerned now that Eli's wife (can't recall her name all of a sudden) is the one who's going to get clipped, inadvertently. They spent so long on her this week -- more time than she's ever gotten before. Or they could just be setting us up to feel very sad when she's lamenting her dead Eli next week. Not sure yet.

I was very happy with the resolution of Gillian's storyline. I mean, it's profoundly tragic, but I enjoyed the long thread of it.

Also, boy did Harrow have a different look about him this week. He looked positively domesticated.

Going to read reviews now.

that was.. quite the long con to get that confession

it was a little too obvious in the end.. every scene with those 2 i just kept waiting for the other shoe to drop

but i was weirdly hoping things would work out for her

This isn't true because there were a few other times she almost cracked well before this episode, like when they had Roger's friend show up at the diner. The detectives' plans kept evolving.

Justice. Her fucked up past doesn't excuse her killing an innocent.

Great ep, this season is on fire.

It only went on that long because he wasn't getting the confession out of her. Seducing her didn't work, helping her through withdrawal didn't work, so finally having her completely emotionally on board and then committing a "murder" himself was what it took to get her to sympathize and confess.

This too:

This isn't true because there were a few other times she almost cracked well before this episode, like when they had Roger's friend show up at the diner. The detectives' plans kept evolving.

Sorry for the dumb question, but i didn't have time to rewatch it last night. Who was the crew coming for Daughter Maitland and Chalky at the end. Were they just random hoods or Narcisse's people?

My wife and I literally high-fived each other when they got Gillian.

FUCK THAT BITCH.

You two suck! :(

What good was she to the show? She was disgustingly creepy in every scene she was in. I couldn't stand her. Quite frankly, I wanted her dead the moment I found she was having sex with her own son.

Just another consequence of what The Commodore did to her. Yes, Gillian did some absolutely reprehensible things, but that I'm still able to feel sorry for her in her own self-destruction is what made her an interesting character imo. She had some absolutely horrible things happen to her.

I always felt more pity for Gillian than anything else (more after Jimmy died than before), but I was not surprised to see her get caught finally. Boardwalk Empire doesn't really let shit go.

I did not see the Pinkerton angle coming, though. I thought Roy might be an investigator of some kind but not a Pinkerton.

Her story is over? Link?

In my opinion, there's no where else to take her. She murdered someone, now she's paying for it, there's no redemption to be had.

We'll probably see her this week to cap it off, but I don't see what benefit following her further gives to the storyline. Of course now that I think about it, seeing a female prisoner's life in the 20's could be really neat for a couple of episodes.
