Knack gets shit reviews: WAHT ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT GOTY

Ryse gets shit reviews: See? Xbox sucks.

They're launch titles. It's rare that launch titles are great. But the Sony bias on this board is at a fever pitch right now.

At least Xbox gamers have 3 exclusive games to play at launch. I went with ps4 and there's a wasteland until 2014.

What? Everyone is making fun of Knack. It got the same reaction as Ryse "Reviews are shit Im still getting it" amid a bunch of people going "LOLOLOOL i knew it sucked"

Knack has been a running joke here for a while now. The "but it's actually fun!" crowd is probably about the same size as Ryse's.

it would have scored higher if they would have took out all those left over kinectish gimmicky moments.. like inching your soldiers up a linear path and crossbow massacre.

But the one thing that it is .... is beautiful!

I was waiting for this review, before deciding whether I jump on-board to Next-gen earlier.
Guess not. Xbone, see you in 2014. Or mabye PS4.

here's a tip. any game that isn't running at full 1080p on Xbox One or PS4 is going to get frame drops. they've dropped the resolution already, they aren't going to drop it as far as necessary to get no locks.

any game running at '30 fps' is going to get drops too, unless it's a racing game.

these are rules of thumb.

1080p Assassins Creed on PS4 30fps no drops.

Seems like the main negative in all of the reviews is that the combat gets repetitive and the enemy variety isnt huge.

I still may pick this up if i go xbox one this gen, i just enjoy mindless action games and the setting is so beautiful .

In terms of enemy variety one thing i love they didnt do is go all supernatural or aliens and shit like they have in every other crytek game.

Farcry - amazing game until the monsters arrived
Crysis 1/2/3 - amazing game until the aliens arrived

I only hope they stick with the setting for a sequel .

so was Crysis 1 a fluke ? I question Crytek's ability to make overall good games anymore.

Well warhead was alright too but yeah basically the whole of Crysis 1 was a fluke. Maybe if they stuck with PC development things would have been different but it's impossible to say with only 1 game under their belt.

Taking the combat from Assassin's Creed - as easy as it is - and constructing an entire game out of it.

Could that ever forge a good or better yet, great game?

I don't think Ryse and Knack should be compared. I think the only thing they have in common are that they were critically panned. Aside from that, they are two very different games in terms of what they set out to accomplish, and how they appear to play. I haven't played either, but it's rather obvious the two aren't very comparable.

Better than youtube, but still compressed to shit. I love this game and can't wait to play it tomorrow! Don't give a crap about reviews.

Ah, I see. Better than nothing, I guess.

But to be honest, with that attitude, devs will continue to push out pretty games with no substance because people will still buy them(despite tons of reviews saying it's mediocre).

lol to the person in the other thread that said this was getting at 70+ on metacritic.

If you have an Xbone, gamefly is your friend on this one.

Ive been playing this for the past hour and im loving this game. GFX are amazing and the combat feels really good. Playing on a harder difficulty and having 4 or 5 enemies at once its hard to just button mash, you need a specific attack or defend move or you will die.

For a launch game I am really happy. I hope this sells well cos a RYSE 2 with a bit more time would be unreal.

Only gripe so far, really linear, but hey its an epic scripted block buster so just enjoy the ride.

lot of reviewers are giving it around 7/10 and I think its on the money.

wow way to exaggerate on multiple fronts but I'll focus on the fact no one is calling Knack GOTY material

Don't worry, if it's shit then i will totally say it. Just that out of all the xbox one launch games Ryse was the title that stood out. I'm sick of fps and i don't like fighting or sports games. Let's see how it is.

That's true. Here's to a wide variety of games for both consoles in the years to come.

This Sony bias crap needs to stop and fast. It's getting so annoying, all I see whenever someone posts that is a cry baby that can't handle anything negative towards their beloved system. Regardless of what some of you may think GAF is not a hive mind and will never be. People enjoy Knack, I'm one of them, but I know it's not a great game by any means and no one on here has come close to saying GOTY, you're seeing what you want to see. Buy Rise, and if you enjoy it, then more power to you, you shouldn't let anyone's opinion sway you, but don't come in here pointing fingers at ghosts.

Wait, what? Who's been saying Knack should be GOTY? Way to over exaggerate.

Truth.

so was Crysis 1 a fluke ? I question Crytek's ability to make overall good games anymore.

Crysis 2 and 3 are good games in some ways, but what CryTek appears to miss is some degree of design consistency.

Far Cry btw, is a better game than Crysis 1. Crysis 1's AI for the Koreans combined with their damage ratio to the player is completely absurd. Like, 'prepare to shit rainbows if you get spotted' absurd, even on lower difficulties. I replayed it some time ago on Steam, but that shit is broken like you wouldn't believe. (or something went wrong in the settings on my system, but I doubt that)

It's no wonder they switched to the aliens as the core enemy after that. Crysis 2 had problems in its design, but core gameplay was actually good, and the journey towards the park quite excellent. Crysis 3 is the best designed game of the bunch, but kinda lacks the awe of the journey and has been named 'boring' on top of it, even though it is more Crysis 1 than Crysis 2 (open environments).

It may also be noteworthy that Ryse is published by Microsoft, with very specific 'launch' demands whereas Crysis was published by EA, who care (only) about how much it will sell. As far as they go as 'video games', the Crysis series is fine.

Ryse on the other hand, simply appears to be rather terrible. The introduction of the Eurogamer review makes it quite why that happened though (I've added bold to the important bits):

Nasty, brutish and short, Ryse: Son of Rome has emerged from a seven-year development hell as a visually resplendent, preternaturally dumb action game that exhibits a galling, monotonous bloodlust. As a gladiator in the console wars arena, it should wow the crowds, but it's not likely to keep them on side for long. It doesn't have the staying power.

Ryse was at one point going to be a showpiece for Kinect on Xbox 360, before its standard-bearing duties were transferred to Xbox One. It's for the best, as a new console platform allows developer Crytek to play to its strengths and stoke the pixel-furnaces of its mighty graphics engine until they roar. All this technical industry is then brought to bear on building ancient Rome just so Crytek can burn it down again.

Can we just get one thing straight? When you say "fuck the haters, I'm going to buy this game even though the impressions from people who, unlike me, have actually played it say that it's awful" you are not taking some grand stand against The Haters or The Man; you are bending over and getting forcibly fucked by a gigantic canoe wielded by a multi-million dollar marketing machine which thrives on generating defensive reactionary sentiment and irrational hype in order to take your money from you.

Hm, this post really hit me. I'm wiping a tear from my eye from how truthful this is.

The AI could use some tweaking to make it more realistic (which would make it easier in some ways and harder in others) but the damage dealt per shot isn't too bad. I enjoy playing on Delta the most because you are still tougher than the enemies but not that much tougher in hitpoint terms. It forces you to use your other advantages to their fullest, which is what the Nanosuit is all about anyway. It's not quite like a lot of modern shooters where on the highest difficulty you just have to crawl from cover to cover and spend 30% of your time behind walls regenerating from a bullet to the shoulder you just took. You have a really diverse set of skills and learning to use speed/cloak/strength in an adaptable way is very rewarding. I find that a lot of people who hate C1 gameplay tend to use armor mode and get into more or less conventional shootouts, occasionally using cloak to sneak around. It's a valid way to finish the game on lower difficulties, but it's not the most fun way to do it by a country mile.

Far Cry was also good. I think their games started to get shittier as they wanted to appeal to a broader audience.

It's a shame that people will buy this no matter what. It will just confirm to MS that their fans will buy anything, even a half-baked previously 360 Kinect title that was shoehorned into the next-gen with no real thought put into how bad an idea that might be.
