Zelda: A Link Between Worlds |OT| All in all you're just another Link in the wall

This game D:

Just finished my first Lorule dungeon
Swamp Palace
That has to be the least tedious water themed dungeon I've ever played. Dare I say it, it was actually pretty fun! AND THE MUSIC

The snappiness and pace of this game is outstanding. I think I'm in the camp that prefers the item rental system. No more meandering around in a dungeon for the first 20 minutes to get the themed item. If this is supposed to be the hookshot dungeon, you open the goddamn door with a hookshot!

So, how does Street Pass work?

Multiple people on Gamefaqs are reporting that they encountered multiple instances of street passes where they otherwise shouldn't have been able to (secluded areas).

Does the game randomly generate passerbys for
Shadow Link
battles? Do you need to be connected to wi-fi and are there particular circumstances to trigger this - such as overall gameplay time? I received one challenge so far and enjoy the feature, would like to get those medals.

levious

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
I thought they made street pass more frequent last year, like you can get data exchanges through wifi connections, not just being near another system.

Apparently the game does. And I can confirm I did get some while I played with disabled wireless switch (to save battery time). In addition to that there's no blue little circle characteristic of SpotPass so it's not SpotPass either.

Probably a silly question...

Do I have to do the bow/arrows dungeon first? ie, do I have to rent the bow first?

Generally in this game, you go to find the entrance to the dungeon first. Then if you're missing an item you need to progress further, you can fast travel back to Ravio's shop to rent/buy the item you need. tl;dr, yeah, get the bow.

Just beat the
ice ruins
, i'm really liking these dungeons, i've beaten the
Ice Ruins and the Dark Palace
so far, wondering which one I should do next.

Do they have fake street passes? Like they just have template Dark Links for you to fight even if you don't get street passes? I usually never get street passes at home and I have had 3 Dark Link fights today.

Swamp Palace is my favourite. Best music, and it looks fantastic. And it's actually a really relaxing experience, oddly enough.

So, the official names of all the dungeon bosses, from Prima's website:

Eastern Palace:
Yuga (of course)
House of Gales:
Margomill
Tower of Hera:
Moldworm
Thieves' Hideout:
Stalbind
Desert Palace:
Zaganaga
Skull Woods:
Knucklemaster
Dark Palace:
Gemesaur King
Swamp Palace:
Arghhus
Turtle Rock:
Grinnex
Ice Ruins:
Dharkstare

Some of the spellings may surprise you. Some of the bosses are similar to ones in ALttP, yet they're not the same. (Example:
Gemesaur King instead of Helmasaur King
)

Looks like an 8 bit original Nintendo game, which is fine, but they shouldn't be charging full price for this. Should be a $20 game.
It's one of the absolute best games that Nintendo, creator of the best games in the world, has ever created. And you think they should make it bargain bin price??

Please play it and then come back with an updated opinion!

So is there no "official" order to the dungeons? I know part of the fun is being able to tackle 'em in any order you want, but I'd just as soon go in order if there is one.

Also, agreed on the strengths of OoT, I think it does still hold up really well because of how nicely paced it is. It gives you a good amount of extra stuff to do between most dungeons without being overwhelming. I also really, really like how fleshed out the lore and the characters are. Zelda games may not have the most complex stories, but OoT and MM really felt like those worlds had mysteries, history, and characters who didn't just exist in service of the player's journey.

Just entered Lorule Castle to finish this up, but...I don't want it to end.

I won't give it a perfect ten, due to a few reasons (it is a bit on the easy side, dungeons are small, I kinda wish they would have played with the two worlds theme a little more and had you switch between Lorule and Hyrule in dungeons), but whoa, this might be my favorite Zelda now.

Is there any point for the boomerang at all in this game?

heh, so
Arghhus
is the only returning boss. interesting. this implies it's the same monster from LTTP.

You could do them in the same order as Link to the Past.

I started playing the game today, and I really enjoyed the Eastern Palace dungeon, so that's a good sign.

My main negative so far is that I can't switch the controls of the analog nub and the d-pad. Trying to aim the bow and arrow with the analog nub makes me want to say "Go home Link, you're drunk."

Trying to play this game with the d pad would have been an absolute fucking nightmare.

the analog control provides a level of control that no 2D zelda has ever offered before.

Yes, all of the other bosses appear to be all-new or alternate species. In fact, given the amount of time that elapsed between ALttP and ALBW, some of these bosses may be evolutions of their ALttP predecessors.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Finished the game.

Best game I've played this year, best 3DS game I've played, and maybe my new favorite Zelda game. And I do not say that lightly. I had high hopes for the game ever since I saw the dungeon gameplay, back when the first footage came out, and loved the music... then they unveiled the rental system and I was kinda worried. So I went into the game with somewhat low expectations and was blown the fuck away.

The dungeon designs were ridiculously good. I was pretty amazed by how much variety there was to the designs, and I thought they all made really interesting use of their designated item. The puzzles were never obtuse, yet made you feel like a genius when you solved them. It's clear that the designers knew exactly how a Zelda game should play. The music for the dungeons was so good. So fucking good. The swamp palace had my favorite track, by far. I could listen to that shit all day.

The rental system actually ended up not being the problem I expected it to be. I thought it would lead to a lot of backtracking, but the game makes it clear before you begin a dungeon exactly which tool you'll need for the job. The goal was to allow players to go through the game in whatever order they choose, and the rental system enables just that without leading to busted game design... so, good job, Nintendo. You were right, I was wrong.

My other concern was that this would be a slavish imitation of ALTTP and little more. It's not. Yeah, it shares a very similar overworld, but the you never feel like you're just playing a remixed version of an old game. A Link Between Worlds rolls in a lot of the dungeon design advances from later Zelda titles, and has way more tricks up its sleeve than I expected going in. There's nothing me-too about this game, but it retains enough similarities that it's still going to feel like home for ALTTP fans.

The most surprising part of the game, though, was the pacing. I was expecting another snore-fest intro and was hoping they'd keep it to 30 minutes at most... but you're off, Zelda-ing your way through the world in about 3-4 minutes. Beyond that, there was constantly something interesting to do in the game, and you never had to wander far to do it. I was never bored, even when I tracked down all 100 of those octopus things... whatever they're called. I did that even though it was completely optional, and I hate collect-a-thons.

The only complaint I really had... which isn't even much of a complaint, is that it's a little weird that
certain items like the Titan Mitt are hidden in the dungeons, since not having access to those items kinda hampers your ability to explore parts of the world until the very end, if you're not lucky in which dungeons you choose to plunder.
It didn't affect my enjoyment at all, but it was kind of a strange way of handling things.

So yeah. I loved it. Buy it, play it, cherish it; then bug your friends with stories about all the cool shit you did in the game until they buy it, too.

Remember that you can hold an arrow and then make fine adjustments by strafing.

Nope.

Tower of Hera:
Moldworm
is a returning boss.
Thieves' Hideout:
Stalbind
is a returning boss but with a different pattern and different attacks.
Dark Palace:
Gemesaur King
is a returning boss but slightly different in design with new pattern.
Swamp Palace:
Arghhus
is a returning boss.
Turtle Rock:
Grinnex
is a returning boss but with a different pattern.
Ice Ruins:
Dharkstare
is a returning boss but MUCH different than his last appearance.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
This is a very good video game and has the best pacing/freedom of any Zelda game in recent memory.

How would you know? Considering we don't have the option.

Maybe the 3DS XL has different ergonomics, but with the original 3DS, I really feel like I'm barely hanging on when I'm trying to use it for any type of twitch control.

No, what's he saying is that while they're similar in function, the fact they have different names (coupled with tweaked aesthetics, in some cases) means that from a LORE standpoint, they're not technically the same characters. :)

Like I speculated, perhaps the idea is that these are the evolutions of the similar monsters from ALttP.

I understand what you're saying, but I was purely referring to the names. Neiteio seems to be on the money that the bosses in LBW are all evolutions of the ones in LTTP - it's just odd that Nintendo went to the effort of changing all their names apart from Arghhus, who is identical to the original (apart from frickin lazers). It leads me to think that Arghhus has essentially lived hundreds of years, only to get beaten by another Link. Ganon style.

Yeah, Rich gets it. And in some cases, you can even speculate as to the nature of the evolution. For example, the
Gemesaur King is encrusted in rupees -- perhaps it's similar to how crystals form underground, and this is what becomes of a Helmasaur King that has time to "incubate?" :p

Maybe the SpotPass icon is hidden because the activity is passive - for example, with other SpotPass titles, it's my understanding that you can be in any game/at the main menu or have the system in sleep mode and SpotPass still functions? Do you need to connect to the wi-fi hotspot or access it from the menu, or is it entirely passive?

StreetPass
When a Nintendo 3DS user gets near a StreetPass relay point, it automatically forwards his or her StreetPass data to Nintendo's servers which stores it temporarily to pass it on to the next Nintendo 3DS user to pass by the same relay point.

Spotpass
SpotPass is a Nintendo 3DS and Wii U "always on" online background connectivity system, similarly to how predecessor WiiConnect24 originally functioned with Wii, which can automatically seek and connect to wireless network nodes such as Wi-Fi hotspots, sending and downloading information in the background while in sleep mode or while playing a game or running an application.

This would mean that, provided you have A Link Between Worlds save data on your handheld - the game will occasionally ping Nintendo servers and pull another random player if you have the wi-fi switch on at any point when passing by one of the many StreetPass locations - but not over your home wi-fi?

I'm just theorizing, can someone clarify on these above points?

It's been a long time since I got through a game in a couple days. I hate to say it but now I'm really aching for a 3ds Metriod.

as long as its the opposite of Fusion, and more like zero mission...

at the third dungeon, 5 hours in... HOLY SHIT at the little makers you can put on the map

THIS GAME...... :O

After listening to the soundtrack again on youtube, I have come to a conclusion:

This is the best soundtrack Nintendo have ever done. Yes, even better than Super Mario Galaxy. Was the music recorded live, or is it synth? I can't tell, which is very high praise. Either way, it puts every other game on the 3DS to shame.

One item slot will never permanently be filled
it's for the weapon used in the final battle
, so don't worry about that one.
