Gamasutra.
My god.

That was fantastic.

I for one am glad that Richard's other shoe finally fell. I always felt that he was destined to die unhappily, and now it's over for him. Rest in peace, Richard. You accomplished your final mission: avenging Jimmy and saving Tommy.

Eli's alive, that's something, no? And Knox -- we should always have kept in mind how crazy he was with his partner who took the booby trap shotgun to the gut. And his first visit to Eli's house was more of the same. And the random head pop when they stopped the convoy. He was destined to go out badly.

I wish I knew where they were going with Chalky's story. I thought it was coming back to a resolution, but holy crap did they mix it up. He knew the snipe was coming, and he must be beating himself up over how it all went wrong.

Where was Daughter singing?

Man... what a finale. The Harrow scenes were just fucking heartbreaking. Sad to see him go like that, but it was getting to the point where they had to end his storyline. It was fitting but I wasn't ready to see it go down like that.
Good lord at that Eli fistfight. Felt so good.
And poor Chalky... I'm wondering if he's even going to be on the show anymore?
Once again they manage to tie up quite a few storylines in a satisfactory way, yet have left a decent number of threads open.

I'm glad Narcisse survived. I was expecting him to be one and done like Gyp, so it's nice to see the show exceed my expectations.

WOOOW I know I fucked myself but I was playing Zelda3ds in the living room and was watching the new ep just on at the same time just becasue thats what was on the TV, and this show is fucking awesome :O soooo well done...
DAT fight scene....

I just never got into it when it started I think I watched the first episode when it aired but just didn't like it for some reason.... I preferred the Sopranos alot more. I think its because Steve is best when he is funny and he's overly serious in this...

Think I may have to marathon this on HBOGO

I'm happy Chalky is alive, despite how poorly he was presented in much of this season. Still, as if Maybell weren't bad enough, they went there with Harrow of all people.

Harrow? Fuck this show. Granted, he may not have been as innocent as Angela or Maybelle, but fuck this show. He didn't need a hero send off.

And simply because: Harrow > Jimmy. Additionally, he didn't bring his demise upon himself in the way Jimmy's questionable actions did. Jimmy clearly "deserved" to die, as does Eli. Eli has signed his own death certificate ten times over, yet he's still drawing air. His victim stance is absurd. Nucky isn't to blame for the raft of terrible decisions Eli has made any more than The Commodore is to blame for Gillian "getting to know" Jimmy, or faking his death. Regardless of how their circumstances have shaped their lives, those two refuse to acknowledge the existence of agency.

I gotta admit it was over my head. I forgot who garvey is.

Not at all like the fictional Narcisse, so it's good the show finally made a clear distinction between the two. There was never anything noble about Narcisse's hollow, self-serving agenda, so viewers who are not familiar with Garvey/UNIA may have been given the wrong impression.

Doyle still alive!
I'm almost certain the he is a fictional character, and going to be one of the last people standing. Doyle's avoidance of death feels like an inside joke among the producers of the show... all things considered.

That last ending bit was a wonderful homage to An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge.

I'm sad to see him go, but now that I think about it they probably didn't want to keep Richard around as the all around badass. It was a good way to go out on. I'll miss him. :(
The way I see it, they didn't have too many directions to go with his character at that point. He either settles down with that family, which while it would've been a nice ending for the character, it wouldn't have made for good television necessarily and he'd probably exit the show anyway. Or he could have embraced the assassin thing and kill more people, which at this point wouldn't be that interesting either. So I think the ending they went with was pretty fitting. Bittersweet - he accomplished his main objective of saving Tommy, but he doesn't get to have a completely happy ending after all the terrible stuff he's done. Really sad that he had to kill that girl though, probably destroyed any will to live he had left.

That was incredible! I had to pause the episode during the big club onyx scene, I was in shock. Once again Tim Van Patten proves he is a great director. RIP to one of my favorite TV characters ever.

First line of this review: "Well, fuck"

That about sums it up, what a brilliant episode. Surprised me numerous times, everyone essentially lost in a way that could be a series finale, yet still managed to lay interesting seeds for season 5 at the same time.

Eli time! Damn, what a character. This guy is always put in a situation where he's getting shit on and what happened in this episode was just perfect. First, the Nucky Eli scene was so tense and so much their relationship. Then, Knox at the house, wow can this show shoot fight scenes, very brutal. I'm very excited to see him in Chicago, good way to get more focus over there.

Chalky and Narcisse. First off, glad Narcisse survived, I had a particular fear of him being "one-offed" as the "villain" when he's a really interesting character. One of many excellent scenes in the episode, I don't think I breathed during the scene at the club. Chalky just lost everything :/

I must admit that I didn't recognize the name Garvy or the relevance at the time, I don't think they really set that up very well.

Harrow. Sad to see such a great character go, but it felt like his time and it was fitting. The scenes shot of him traveling and then on the beach were so beautiful.

So yeah, a truly excellent end to a season that I wasn't feeling very much early on.

As much as I enjoyed this season I didn't really care for the finale. It just felt too messy and inconclusive. Some parts were weirdly shot (like Eli coming entering into the dark Albatross), and other story parts just seemed nonsensical (Nucky revealing the body). Certain events just didn't feel like they were explained very well. It's hard to find much importance in the deal the doctor made with the feds at the end of the season. Meanwhile other foreshadowing seems like it went to waste. Rothstein and the other major players were left without any impact, so why even bother to touch on them at all? The show has lots of ideas, but it doesn't really seem to know what to do with them. Even the events that are playing out seem to be rolling over fast and without much emotion. It's hard to gauge characters when it doesn't even seem like their reaction to important events is being captured.

As an aside, the fight scenes in this show are becoming somewhat of a joke. The fumbling around is repetitive and comical, and the scenes long overstay their welcome while lacking impact. While I enjoyed Knox through most of the season, I didn't really feel like the actor handled the emotive peaks near the end very well.

Yeah I can't really say I'm a fan of his acting. Sometimes he nails the creepy thing really well. But it seems like outside of that his acting can be pretty mediocre. Regardless the character's dead now so I guess it doesn't really matter.

Gamasutra.
The actor playing Knox/Tolliver (Brian Geraghty) seemed to be much more compelling early in the season. I thought his introduction along with the interrogation of Eddie Kessler were pretty decent. Later, though, yeah ... he couldn't really pull of wild and crazy.

Edit: I checked last season's thread, and it was up to 2500 posts in late November. This one seems destined to be much less populated. I thought this season was better than last, ultimately.

I wish that after 'Empire' finishes they pick up with a new series all about Chicago/NY using the same people for Capone, Luciano and Lansky. I'd love to see it go all the way to the beginning of Vegas.

Fantastic finale. But Maybelle's eyes still moving about after the shot is going to stick with me. Ugh.
Every parent's nightmare -- seeing your child die in front of you. I don't need Boardwalk Empire to come up with nightmares for me, frankly, but that one was especially vivid.

I'll never forget how my former neighbor, now passed on herself, remarked about losing one of her children: "Humans simply aren't made to live longer than their children."

I just feel bad that Richard did not accomplish his last mission before passing.
